I think that's exactly why - he's not associated with newsreading so allows the programme to be a less formal affair than it otherwise would've been. I don't think it was meant to be a formal programme.

Thanks for this. It is a fascinating watch, especially for us-news presentation enthusiasts. We literally get to see the whole process of how the news breaks, from newsroom to the studio. It is why I will always prefer newsroom studios to anything else. Nothing compares to the urgency and reality a newsroom background brings, especially in times of breaking news.
Martine did great, as expected. She is one of BBC's finest and they better not let her go. Btw, that must have been the one of the quickest news readings into a report, Martin did at the start. She clearly wanted to move on to preparing for the big moment.

While it's often the wacky that gives TM headlines, they interview politicians, do paper reviews but more importantly speak to the public directly and engage in conversation.Was absolutely right to bring him in last night but I think the funeral should be left to the news team - unlike the weddings and jubilee it isn't a celebratory event (although will be a celebration of his life) and I suspect like the initial announcement there will be protocol followed that keeps it all pretty formal on ITV as well as the BBC.
Quite surprised it is at 3pm - expected it to be mid-morning. I'd expect coverage will probably be from at least midday (and all morning on BBC1) and then have Saturday editions of the evening news bulletins to round off the coverage.

All the negative press regarding ratings and complaints makes me think the BBC have rather misread the public's appetite for non-stop coverage of this. They had 3 channels dedicated to the same story last night. Surely someone should have realised that would be overkill? At least continue with regular programming of some sort on BBC Two, there was absolutely nothing to gain with another BBC News simulcast. I'd half understand it for the Queen herself, or a developing story like Diana's was, but the predictable death of a 99 year old man - no matter what his status - just didn't warrant (or carry!) the amount of airtime that was given to it.

A complete misreading of the mood of the nation, if they even bothered to attempt to read it at all.
Considering the circumstances of the last 12 months, I don't think wall to wall coverage on every channel was the right choice.

Joe Duffy has a regular bit on the Ronan Collins Show to promote Liveline and he talked about the death of Prince Philip, this was at about 12.40. He was asking people to call in to talk about Prince Philip and the Royal Family after the News at One.
RTE Radio One Extra was carrying the BBC World Service as normally scheduled.
