New BBC channel logos in action (on air from Wed) - scoobiesnacks - 19-10-2021

I can't see that Sports logo lasting long. And isn't it the wrong way around?

It's what they come to represent that is important. It might not be recogniseable straight away but soon enough the hope will be is that you see the symbol alone without any additional text and recognise what it represents.

They're really going all out with the whole "squares" idea

I think it's coincidental that they all technically fit into squares simply because they're built with apps in mind, isn't it? Everything needs to fit in an app icon (the universal rounded square) these days for smartphones and app stores, and these are no different. Exactly the correct thing to do from a design perspective, I just think you're giving them too much credit by assuming that's part of a clever concept rather than just done to fit the needs of various platforms Wink

The key words there being "will start to" and "gradually".

I don’t know why I didn’t see this before, but I now realise why the BBC logo is top-centre on the idents - it’s because this matches the alignment on iPlayer, Sounds, News app etc. So, whatever BBC service you’re consuming, the first thing you’ll always see is the BBC logo top-centre on your screen. Very consistent and clever branding that will build consistency and recognition across all their output.

Yes, I (by the looks of it unsuccessfully) tried to explain this last week. Whatever BBC channel or service you consume, the first thing you see is BBC, everything else becomes secondary. That is one of the main points of the rebrand.

What is important is the connection between content and BBC, not content and channel or service. The BBC wants to be linked to the content it provides just like Netflix is linked to Squid Game or the Crown.

Well oneness is gone as of tomorrow. In its place you will have a prominent BBC logo (currently entirely absent from the oneness mess) and a less prominent channel name (in line with the constantly reducing importance of a linear channel). And of course there will also be a fluid, slick and modern animation Smile

I do feel that you are being deliberately obtuse here. Surely there’s enough exciting things to talk about without this ridiculous discussion going round in circles. We know that the Oneness pieces of film remain for now with the new logo/channel mark overlaid. There we go, conversation closed.

Nothing to do with being obtuse. You're absolutely right, we are looking at the biggest rebrand in BBC history and some people are hung up about random video clips not being replaced immediately. The clips are irrelevant, what matters is the branding surrounding them. Even more so where tomorrow is only the start of a long process.

I don't see what News and Sounds are meant to be. iPlayer is clearly a play icon, Weather is part of the typical depiction of the Sun, Bitesize is books.

I don't quite see a league table for sport.
Sounds, to me, looks like those newfangled "Waveforms" you'd see in illustrations - think the Speaker icon on Windows.
Oh I see what you mean now.

Yes, that's what I see as well - makes more sense when you see the animation. Still scratching my head about the news one though ?

Yep, that’s what I’ve thought Sport was too.

News to me is (admittedly very very stylised) a map of the world, in my view anyway.

What are your bets that the three notes at the end is the new "sonic identity"?

What's interesting to notice...and is hard to get your head around at first is...the icons aren't really meant for the content itself.

If you look at that sequence, they aren't anywhere in the content of that service. What's at the top? You guessed it, the BBC. Not [icon] SPORT, [icon] NEWS. That's a bit 1997 thinking ( Big Grin ), it's just the BBC blocks. The icons are once again, about wayfinding and cross promotion.

Do we know if permanent DOGs are going to be reintroduced to show off the new TV looks?

I think, for me, that's the elegant element to this that I like. I'm rather (still) non-plussed on the actual logo and still think the dimensions look off but have to say that core focus around the master brand, and then associated way finding, works well.

Of course, many divisions will want to hold on to their anchors (BBC Sport, BBC News, for example) but it would be nice to hear the brand being reinforced on air by simply referring to it as 'the BBC'. On a side note, not that this will happen, but it would be a golden opportunity to kill off one of my big bug-bears around regional news teams and signing off 'BBC Middle of Nowhere Tonight' rather than just using a unifying 'BBC News' or... shock horror... 'BBC'. Ok, ramble over.

Given that the iPlayer Connected TV beta version is already 95% of what is shown in the video on Twitter, it wouldn't surprise me to see the new logo filter in to that app first and released fairly quickly.

That's a question we don't know the answer to yet. I wouldn't be surprised if either BBC Four drops its DOG all together but for them to remain on CBBC and CBeebies or all the channels gain them.

One question is how a potential BBC One DOG would interfere with the likes of the BBC News Live/Locator graphic. I suspect it might look rather messy. The other is around how the regions would handle the DOG on local bulletins and any regional programme variants.

Well at least Radio 4 and 5 Live's sister channels are the same color now! Too bad though that once again, CBBC and Cbeebies have been left out...
