At 6.11, next to "BBC ONE", "BBC TWO", and "BBC WORLD" is "BBC EXPLORER".
This is news to me - anyone in the know?
We know BBC Choice did eventually came out (in 1997 style), BBC Learning (kind of) became BBC Knowledge, but what about Horizons and Arena?
Judging by the brand, did the BBC (at some point) wanted to create channels for specific sports and (possibly) documentary & travel programming, similar to what UKTV and Carlton Select' approach later?

BBC Horizons became UK Horizons (1997-2004) and BBC Arena became UK Arena (1997-1998 - now Alibi) - links to Wikipedia articles underlined.

I would imagine by having the lettering full height with the boxes, as per the image of the BBC Select logo on the Clean Feed homepage. I think the BBC logo looks slightly less awful in white, as it does in that picture, than the grey version that's currently doing the rounds - it didn't help that our first introduction to it a few months ago was on that hideous grey-on-puce BBC Select logo, a colour combination that would be difficult to make any logo look good.

The current logo is timeless through its minimalism. It works against all BBC brands, and at all sizes.
The supposed new logo is objectively worse. It will not reduce well at small sizes, it will not work against all BBC brands.
But what do you expect from the organisation that has brought us some of the poorest broadcast design of the last decade?

Indeed. Wouldn't be surprised to find out that the logo itself was designed internally, as that is where most of the BBC branding missteps of the past 20 years have come from.

Ahh yes, ‘The Reith Switcheroo‘ as I like to nickname that mock. I do prefer that version but I’m guessing they wanted to make it just a little bit different to what we currently have now hence the spacing change and lettering size. It was certainly going to cause a stir when we’re all used to the 1997 one now.
The "Reith Switcheroo" (I'm calling it that from now on) is ultimately too similar and the old version would constantly be used by mistake by less observant programme makers and designers. A large swathe of Joe Public also wouldn't notice the change, and there'd be (faux) outrage when the amount of money used to rebrand the BBC was revealed and reported on the front page of the Daily Fail as "£__ MILLION TO CHANGE A FONT" shocker. So I can see why they're doing something more drastic to it. It's just unfortunate that it's ended up looking like a cheap mock, probably not helped by the back door way it's first been used.
If they were going to change it up completely, part of me wishes they'd just gone all out with something really brave and new. This feels like a compromise - changed just enough to make it different, but not enough that it brings anything new to the table.

Completely agree, the new blocks look the way they do because of budget constraints. I think they also consider the 3 blocks to be very distinctively BBC so anything too drastic might make them look unrecognisable worldwide. I'd be so interested to see if they had any other ideas on the table and their reasonings for why they weren't taken forward.

It will be interesting to see how they roll out the logo, whatever that final logo looks like. Compared with 1997 the BBC logo is in so many more places.... it's everywhere.
It's not just TV channels and buildings but all those webpages and social media accounts, all those apps on multiple platforms etc. Also what about the logo in the corner of videos on iPlayer and other streaming services? Are they burnt on and if so are they just going to live with that or re-render and remake them all?
If the old logo is remaining on older content that's staying online how does that reconcile with replacing it to save money on font licensing?

I presume that by introducing Reith in 2019 and taking 2 years to Reithise the BBC logo itself, the Beeb has supposedly still paid for font licensing, and also spent money to introduce new logos in Reith, therefore they spent more money instead of saving! This makes no sense whatsoever!

And even if it doesn't end up happening, it already has because the press has reported about it

To be fair, I actually really quite like the motion that goes with the new logo. If this translates through to the channel branding then I don't think it's too offensive at all.

IIRC, font licensing doesn't even apply to the BBC logo anyway - firstly becuase it isn't technically Gill Sans (rather bespokely drawn letters reminiscent of Gill Sans) and secondly, even if it used actual Gill Sans, there is some loophole around logos like the blocks as they are a shape rather than text. The latter bit somebody can probably explain better, but I imagine its something similar to you being able to use photorealistic replicas of licensed images without paying anything.

I created a quick mockup with the new blocks against some concept channel branding I did last year and yep it's certainly going to take some getting used to compared to the 1997 BBC blocks but they do at least work.
