Local TV - Brekkie - 10-11-2021 That's why repeating shows a high number of times is crucial to maximising visibility and increasing their viability. It's something the original licences discouraged but for them to get noticed by viewers something I think needed to happen. You're right a show airing at 9pm might get lost amongst the competition, but if you almost roadblock that show so it airs every couple of hours in an evening you'll catch channel hoppers at various points in the night, rather than relying on one primetime screening and one off-peak repeat. As you get more data in you can then evolve the schedule to reflect where shows are most watched, hopefully cutting back on repeat content and adding new content. London Live tried a local breakfast show which tanked. The audience for another tv breakfast show in the UK market isn't there any more. The audiences for Breakfast and GMB are minute compared to what radio gets in that same slot. Going back to the Swiss model, on Leman Bleu in Geneva tonight, the 6-8pm CET block is slightly different with different scheduled programming between 6-6.30pm, but then 6.30-8pm is repeated throughout the night and tomorrow daytime. 8-8.30 then has different programming which is then looped with the 6.30-8pm stuff. News is live at 6.30pm and then repeated every two hours. There was the possibility, of course, that Channel 5 could have been a network of local TV channels. But I suspect had that been the case, by now they’d all have gone the way of the ITV regional companies and most commercial local radio stations. There were a handful of local channels in the early 00's broadcasting under Restricted Service Licences, the most prominent being Channel M which had everything going for it but still wasn't sustainable. The London Live Breakfast programme was on London Live though - and suffered from essentially not being very good and being aimed solely at a very Hipster demographic. I am not saying you're wrong - it could be that a local breakfast slot genuinely couldn't work here - but I think that it's impossible to write off a timeslot across the board citing a failure on a channel which, objectively, got it very wrong at launch and is essentially a non-local cable repeats channel now. It would be like saying a national news channel couldn't work here because GB News is tanking. Whatever the woes of the breakfast block, implementing your suggestion on the Swiss approach would at least be having a go at it, which would be an improvement. Right now, these channels do feel like they are just waiting for somebody to say 'enough is enough'. Local TV - Mouseboy33 - 11-11-2021 Unfortunately you cant cover huge complex city the size of London on a shoestring budget. It requires a significant budget and know how to pull it off. LondonLive Breakfast was never going to work, because frankly it tried to be a national-style programme on a public-access tv budget. Everything within the M25 beltway requires a huge news team and proper news vehicles, reporters maybe even a news helicopter and much more to make a significant impact. These flimsy local channels were set up to fail. Especially if t he people behind the scenes never ran a local station or local news operation. But also most people dont even know what a local station is or supposed to be. It doesnt mean that all the programming is local. They do these dumb surveys and ask people what would they wan to see on a local station. How stupid. Because most Brits dont know that means and will say something like: I want a programme about the history of our town.....yeah that might be interesting, but realistically how many people will watch that? Very few to make money and to make financial sense. Thats just stupid and financial suicide. Its never going to work. I remember seeing a clip of it during a partial eclipse, where they didn't even make it out of the studio to show the scene happening outside their building Local TV - Brekkie - 13-11-2021 The trouble with Big Centre TV was they wanted to make the channel ATV - as if it was still the 80s. Compared to the City TV Birmingham bid which won but shut up shop before launching it certainly didn't look to sell Birmingham as a modern, happening city. However they tried and had people with experience behind it - but frankly needed those heads on much younger shoulders. London Live has just been a failure from start to finish, and it's a tremendous shame. I'd have thought that if any city could have a viable TV station of its own, it would be London. There are whole countries that have smaller populations than London does, and they can sustain multiple TV stations - surely London can sustain one? :? Amsterdam - a city of fewer than 900,000 people - has had its own TV station for nearly 30 years. Okay, it's run on a shoestring - but if Amsterdam can manage a TV station, I'm pretty sure London, with a population ten times bigger, can make a success of one. I think London Live's approach was just completely back-to-front, from start to finish. Aiming virtually all of their output at hipsters, a demographic infamous for not watching live television, was just completely boneheaded. I actually think they should have gone completely the other way, and leaned into a sort of nostalgia factor - albeit to nowhere near the extent Big Centre did! Imagine: 'London Tonight - it's back, every night on London Live!' Absolute madness that ITV ever got rid of that brand - one that pretty much every Londoner knows. Local TV - Keith - 19-11-2021 Worth a little note that according to the Freeview updates page That's TV has a festive name change... With the token local 10 minute news at 6pm on channel 7/8. Interesting to note they've got The Benny Hill Show on air every night at 9pm, which has managed to get them a little bit of press all over the place. Wonder who owned the rights to those... Local TV - AaronLancs - 19-11-2021 Given the amount of top slicing of the License Fee that was done to set this up and keep it going for a few years at least. Would giving these stations some sort of preferential 'access' of sorts to non news BBC archive content been more better in the short to mid term run then 'proper' local content could be created with no pressure to instantly get results. Wonder who owned the rights to those... Pity it's airing in stretchyvision... As to rights, I believe Benny Hill Show was done for three different broadcasters over the years - the BBC, ATV and Thames. The Thames shows were by far the most popular (particularly on the international front) and much like most of the Thames catalogue, will be with Fremantle. The missingepisodes Proboard forum suggests the ATV and (most of) the BBC shows still exist, even though there was a rumour the lot had been wiped because of the way Hill moved to Thames. Local TV - nwtv2003 - 16-12-2021 To no one’s surprise Your Manchester TV was removed outright yesterday and has been replaced on the GMAN MUX by OD365.TV on Channel 97, which appears to be a barker for a streaming TV service akin to those you see on 200’s on the Freeview EPG. Local TV - Ashley - 16-12-2021 Interesting, I noticed last week there was no local Manchester/North West news on the channel, and they were broadcasting a rotation of the other Local TV news programmes (despite what the EPG said). Local TV - This is UTV - 17-12-2021 Why is a streaming channel allowed in slot 97, when it should be in the 200's like the rest of them? Is it going to be like the QVC Beauty channel that broadcasts for a token few hours over the air, then for the majority of the day its streamed online on the same channel slot. How long did Manchester TV last then on channel 99? I bet That's TV Manchester are delighted to see them go! |
