BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - MrBiggieSMLZ - 01-04-2022 So today's the day Oneness is no more, huh? hock: I certainly didn't expect new idents to be introduced around this time of year, but count me in...

The new BBC THREE one looks so out of place now when you see it beside the old BBC FOUR logo. All the channels have launched new logos, so what is taking so long for them to be updated on various platforms? And of course, shortly after I posted this I noticed the new iPlayer logo on Sky Q. Still no new ONE, TWO and FOUR logos in the EPG though. Same on Freeview/Freesat. Is it up to each company separately to notice and do it or are the BBC supposed to send out the new logos and request they be updated? I would have thought Freesat would have been updated by now considering it's run jointly by the BBC. All the channels have launched new logos, so what is taking so long for them to be updated on various platforms? I would imagine it’s up to the broadcaster to submit any logo changes. When ITV changed its logo in 2013, all their channels had the new logos on the relaunch day on Sky’s EPG. It wouldn’t make any sense for someone at Sky, Virgin or whoever to constantly monitor the hundreds of channels they carry for any logo changes so they can keep their EPG up to date. BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Joe - 01-04-2022 Well it’s not just that – where would they get the logo asset from? They’d have to reach out to the company anyway. BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - MatthewFirth - 01-04-2022 I was not expecting this on April Fool's Day, but apparently, it's true... A strong, single identity (the balloon should have been used out and about at events). Really good surrounding presentation package and consistency with other channels. Nice 'twist' on the familiar globe symbol used for decades. Such a variety of scenes Appropriate to show in front of any type of programme. Music! Varied lengths - good for different announcements/pace of junction Special idents, including some lovely Christmas ones. I think some of the relative love or hate is reliant on the package it replaces. For example a dark, single, silent ident into the balloons, a slow animated TWO into the 1991 '2s and so on. It's probably why some of us have warmed to the Rhythm & Movement idents in recent years. So on paper, today's launch should be a free hit - they can't do any worse than what we've had lately. It just says BBC instead of iPlayer. That really annoys me and the BBC should be all over this stuff. But it's all about the new BBC1 idents today!!

I checked the iPlayer through Sky and BBC Three's been updated with the new logo! Surely someone will have noticed by now! BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - madmusician - 01-04-2022 Yes, and, in reply to a post some pages ago now, the link to the globe was actually a pretty strong one IMHO - it's not just that 'they fancied a balloon and painted it like a globe' as was suggested. Lambie-Nairn and his colleagues were discussing how best to reinvent the globe, and the balloon concept was based upon BBC One 'bringing the world to every corner of the UK'. You might say that this is just marketing-speak, but it actually tells us how the balloons package reinforced the relevance of the globe to BBC One. What it did do, of course, was make the globe concept a bit less 'in your face' and, in that sense, it was a way for BBC One to edge out of having the globe symbols (as the dancers weren't *that* different to the balloons, whereas if they'd been the replacement for the 1991 globe...). And I would be the first to argue today that the globe is an outdated, imperialist symbol for BBC One, but any nice graphic 'nods' back to it (the circles and, we hope, the lens symbols) are welcome. But step away from the 'globe' representation, and the balloons were just a great ident set. Showcasing beautiful British countryside and landmarks, a colourful identifiable symbol, really strong music, and the great potential for special idents (I'm aware this list is similar to Asa's above!). They really could have continued with that symbol for BBC One for a very long time (even if they refreshed the idents every so often) and it was only one woman's dislike of it that led to the early retirement of the balloon. On another note, there's never anything quite like a new BBC One ident day as a pres fan (although it's not *quite* the same when we've had most of the package in operation for six months or so) - I still remember the 2006 circles launch like it was yesterday. Here's hoping that we like what we see later on - enjoy everyone! You might say that this is just marketing-speak, but it actually tells us how the balloons package reinforced the relevance of the globe to BBC One. The balloon analogy is one that I’ve heard used by various broadcasters over the years. The idea is that you shouldn’t sound like you’re broadcasting from London, talking about “up in Scotland” or “over in Bristol”, but you should sound like you’re floating in a balloon somewhere over the country. I remember Jenny Abramsky saying this was how she wanted 5 Live to sound when she launched it. And I seem to remember Martin Lambie-Nairn explaining this idea as part of the reasoning for using the balloon for BBC One. |
