New BBC channel logos in action (on air from Wed) - Josh - 19-10-2021

He is a BBC employee and presenter of Must Watch on 5 Live. I would say so but he must know something we don't.

“ A BBC spokesperson has confirmed to me that the new look will mean the end of the “Oneness” idents. Goodbye!”

So it’s now confirmed oneness is going

That is all well and good but Thistle explicitly said that Oneness is staying (even showing us a cap of an ident). Unless they've changed it in the last few days, then I doubt Bryan's claim for now.

But BBC News Arabic and BBC News Persian have had no studio time that I am aware of to test this new logo in the viz engines, or to preview any new titles. I suspect the smaller languages will be the same.

So either they're not changing on Wednesday, OR it'll be plopped in to the global viz engine scene without full testing, OR it's been fully tested and ready to go and I just don't know about it ☺

I can certainly say it won't be happening without any testing!
My experience in the gallery differs!

OK, what I really mean is that true consideration is rarely given to language services when branding changes happen. The "everything News must look the same" attitude doesn't work in every language and every culture. Case in point was the refresh to lower thirds before Reith. The same viz template was applied to every service - logo in the bottom left corner, straps left aligned, live+locators top left. Looked brilliant on the News Channel and World News in English. One hour of technical testing in the Persian/Arabic TV galleries and everything was working perfectly, was signed off by the branding people, and declared ready for launch.

On launch day itself, the ticker went the wrong way (Arabic and Farsi use right to left text) so the end of the headline came up first. The live+locator straps clashed with the watermark DOG. Everything needed to be flipped the other way round to make sense for the audience - so live+locator in the top right, logo bottom right, etc.

My fear for tomorrow is that the master viz scene will be updated with the new BBC blocks, which will have been tested on the domestic services, without anyone thinking/realising it will affect every service which uses it, and suddenly tomorrow all the language services will (a) surprise staff who are not expecting it, and (b) potentially be in the wrong place/wrong size/whatever.

Chatting to more colleagues last night, including a senior director who I would presume would know about this change, literally not one other person was aware of this upcoming change.

I can give you a personal assurance that nothing surprising will happen tomorrow, if that helps you sleep easier!

Teams learn from past mistakes and the Reith modernisation did not follow that path and took longer because of the lengthy team engagement - it's not long finished.

I'm glad there's some public announcements now that more clearly state what I've been intimating for a while - this is phased and divisional priorities mean News, Sport etc will follow later. Tomorrow is about starting the journey on the broader level of broadcast wayfinding.

I'm a bit worried everyone thinks it's like an Apple product launch!

The thing is, he's going on "the new look will mean the end of the "Oneness" idents" - well, yes, it does. But not necessarily tomorrow - in a few months time, yes.

So the rebrand isn't one big practical joke by Thistle then? Big Grin

I won't believe Oneness is gone until it's gone. I think our sources are probably more reliable than Scott's, but also as I've felt since the rumours of Oneness not going began I bet discussions have continued going back and forth ever since then and it might not be until today that a final decision is made.

New BBC channel logos in action (on air from Wed) - CameronYoung - 19-10-2021

We always knew Oneness would go after the logo change - it's more a question of when. It seems Scott is interpreting it as (or the spokesperson is making it out like) it'll be going tomorrow.

New BBC channel logos in action (on air from Wed) - JetixFann450 - 19-10-2021

The name Oneness will be going. I doubt the idents themselves are going, unless the BBC regions around the UK have suddenly finished their homework and have made an extended range of idents within a week.

I'm really confused now. Is Scott Bryan a reliable source?

With no disrespect to Thistle (things may have changed once again last minute), Scott Bryan is a seasoned media journalist and I would argue a more accurate source than anyone on this Forum.

This. "One-ness" means the actual concept with the horrendous Oneness lettering slapped on a video. That's gone as of tomorrow. A number of the videos which were used, will continue to be used and with new branding.

Glad it's now been made official that this is not a flick of the switch rebrand. It was never going to be.

It’ll be fun over the next year to see the Chameleon plan come to fruition - just getting some tweaks done today for it and had noticed that 6 Music’s introduced a new sonic identity today too. Wide ranging and gradual - for a lot of viewers it’ll only be obvious when the iPlayer and Sounds apps get their updates, but worth the effort for sure.

Considering I’ve seen assets named “Sausage Dogs 2021” (that I can’t see until they’re on the air, will be scrubbing back to 05:59am when I wake up tomorrow!), I’d sayThistle is indeed on the money with this one.

He’s definitely a reliable source but his posts can be interpreted in different ways. They confirm that the BBC One idents will be changing, but not when.

To be clear, 'Oneness' is a campaign which is designed to reflect unity across the nation. A portrait of people coming together. This - the campaign itself - will end. What will remain, for a time, is the video material associated with the Oneness idents (although now minus the 'Oneness' tagline added to the One).

Once new material from across all the nations has been edited down, new idents will launch and replace the current interim solution.

The counter-argument is knowing who a few of the blue verified users are from my moderating days of TVF. As you say though it could be another last minute change, or it could equally be "end of 'Oneness'" actually meaning the removal of the word "Oneness" from the existing idents.

Either way we'll find out tomorrow morning for certain what has or hasn't happened with BBC One. It's worth noting that some of the new trailers may possibly show during Breakfast at the end of the regional news bulletins. I can't remember if BBC One still show an ident before the start of Breakfast.
