No adverts? Sadly I don't think it is some collective choice made for the love of the BBC. Euro 2020 (+1) - JK1985 - 12-07-2021 But ITV do not air adverts during the 45 minutes each. Maybe that is one reason - but it also ruins the anti BBC people who say BBC should carry advertising and be funded by subscription only. One of the benefits of the licence fee funding is no adverts. But I think there is feeling that the BBC is the place for these big National moments. Having Lineker and the regular MOTD team involved that viewers will watch will be more familiar with also helps a bit. I think there is also an unfair perception, at least with football fans that ITV’s coverage of football is going to be inferior and riddled with technical failures.JK1985 post_id=27464 time=1626102919 user_id=1347 Wrote:To all the BBC haters and licence fee bashers, I say this - why does the majority of the population turn to the BBC for these big sporting events, and not ITV? I do think it was worthwhile ITV showing though, they’d struggle to hit a peak of 6 million on most other Sunday nights and it’s the only opportunity for advertisers to get their slot on a major final featuring England. Although you do have to wonder how many of ITVs viewers flicked over to the BBC when the ads were on, but I guess people not watching the ads is always going to happen whatever is on the other side. Euro 2020 (+1) - Brekkie - 12-07-2021 Do we know what came 3rd in the slot? The fact that both channels came on air early before each kick off worked well, with ITV generally on air 45-60 mins before and BBC 30-45 mins before. It lets the coverage breathe and not feel rushed, they can talk about the game coming up as well as fitting in news from the England camp etc without pushing out the other I can see both channels using pretty much the same line ups for the World Cup in 2022 Of course if ITV use Mark Pougatch again, it’ll be a rare event, Steve Williams will know, that they’ve used the same host for so long. The only negatives I’ve heard around forums etc are slightly weak co-commentators on both sides, and the Matterface/Tyldesley situation. Euro 2020 (+1) - eyeTV - 12-07-2021 Adrian Chile's kind of broke the sequence and managed to get 2 World Cups out of his tenure. There have been no FA Cup announcements yet, so presumably Mark will present those too. While it's true that ITV seem to have gone through a load of presenters, with only Chiles doing more than one World Cup since 1986, there haven't been many examples of them changing just for the sake of change, probably only Gabby Logan was dropped for no obvious reason. Certainly in the case of Des Lynam and Adrian Chiles, it seems to have been because there was a big name on the market and the fact that they had people already in situ was neither here nor there - certainly the Des signing was entirely cooked up between David Liddiment and Brian Barwick, nobody else at ITV Sport had a clue. And in the case of Chiles, it seems very much like they hired him for Daybreak and then said "Oh, you can do the football as well" as a sweetener. Since 1990, Elton Welsby went cos they lost a load of rights, Matthew Lorenzo was a disaster, Bob Wilson was replaced by a big name becoming available, Des retired, Steve Rider was also replaced by a big name becoming available and Chiles was seemingly very expensive and they'd also just lost a lot of rights. It's only Gabby where it seems they just didn't rate her. Mark Pougatch has seemingly done a good job and everyone's happy with him, and there are no big names on the market, so he seems pretty secure in the long run. Euro 2020 (+1) - Brekkie - 12-07-2021 Gabby has been fantastic this tournament too, though I think she is a far better host than she was in 2006, although she's had far more chances to showcase her talents at the BBC than at ITV and if she hadn't gone in 2006 as Steve says circumstances would have been moved her on not long after. At the moment I think the only threat to Mark at ITV would be if they won back Champions League rights which attracted a big name or if ITV Racing came to an end but they wanted to keep Ed Chamberlin. Also their entrance is actually on the main road behind Yes, Westminster Council are very well practised at clearing up the litter and mess left behind by the knucklehead public who seem incapable of properly disposing of their rubbish It would have been even worse if England had won. I went to bed expecting to wake up yesterday morning to news of torched Italian restaurants etc. I was genuinely surprised and shocked, (even given the morons that attach themselves to football ) to hear about the depth of the social media abuse Euro 2020 (+1) - Steve Williams - 13-07-2021 Brekkie post_id=27504 time= user_id=976 Wrote:Gabby has been fantastic this tournament too, though I think she is a far better host than she was in 2006, although she's had far more chances to showcase her talents at the BBC than at ITV and if she hadn't gone in 2006 as Steve says circumstances would have been moved her on not long after. Well, if they trust Pougatch enough to do England semi-finals in the World Cup and Euros, you'd assume they'd trust him to do anything. I think the likelihood of Ed Chamberlin doing football for ITV is pretty remote, if he wanted to carry on doing football he could have stayed at Sky, but clearly racing is his favoured sport and he wants to concentrate on that, and I think if the racing were to go elsewhere (which seems a bit unlikely, if they want a FTA presence, as the coverage seems to be successful both critically and commercially) he would go with it. You sometimes hear people suggest Chamberlin could do football as well as racing, but the tournaments always clash with the Derby and Royal Ascot, which he's obviously going to do as number one racing presenter, so there's no point. I know Steve Rider ended up doing both Formula 1 and the World Cup in 2006 but that was a very last minute arrangement which Rider wasn't particularly keen on. It was a strange business with Gabby, though, because up until then she'd been becoming increasingly prominent and everyone knew that she would be replacing Des when he retired, and that was seen as quite a big thing for ITV because she was obviously a major departure from what had been before and it seemed very progressive to have a woman as main anchor, so she looked set to enjoy a long and successful spell in that role. But then I remember reading that apparently ITV considered her helming of the 2005 Champions League Final as somehow deficient (ITV4 repeated that last year, and I couldn't see what was wrong with her performance) and then the next season there was that really weird set-up where Gabby was alone in the studio and provided little more than links while Andy Townsend and Ally McCoist were pitchside and did much of the presenting themselves, and then in the World Cup she started as main presenter but then Steve Rider was parachuted in and did all the big games. And that was the beginning of the end for Gabby at ITV, I remember them saying she was still part of the team but in 2006/07 she did about four Uefa Cup matches on ITV4 and that was it. I remember seeing the news that she was leaving on the front page of the paper in October, and she joined the Beeb in January. It does seem strange, though, she'd had six years working her way up to main anchor and was seemingly being groomed for it, and then when she got there, they suddenly decided they didn't rate her, and she was off within two years. I know people have said that if that happened these days it would be a much bigger deal, which is probably right. For what it's worth, I think moving to the Beeb has been the making of Gabby, I sometimes thought on ITV she could come across as a bit flippant and lightweight, although some of the things they got her to do on ITV possibly contributed to that (like the lighter-side-of-the-World-Cup stuff in 2002, with lookalikes and pie-tasting and so on) and she was very young at the time of course, she joined ITV at 25 and was only just in her thirties when she became main anchor. But I think now she's a really good presenter, is clearly valued by the Beeb and she also seems a really nice person. For what it's worth, Gabby has presented programmes on BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, ITV1, ITV2, ITV4, ITV News, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky Sports, BT Sport, Amazon Prime and DAZN, plus BBC and commercial radio, which I think must be a record, and is testament to her skills. Brian Barwick had been head of sport at ITV, and he recruited her, but he left at the end of 2004 I think. Mark Sharman came in early 2005 as the new head of sport, and made the decision early in his new role.
