Radio_man, I am 48 and the NHS has been "24hrs away from privatisation" under the Tories since the early 80s - it's a lie and has always been a lie. IIRC, Labour did a lot of privatisation too. End of political point - I am a huge supporter of a free NHS. I would agree with you however that there is no love lost from the Tories to Auntie Beeb. To go back to my point from my "BBC - how does it fight back?" thread from July, the BBC is such an easy target because it does too much that the private sector can do well and it doesn't currently do what it does well enough. It has been the architect of much of its own misfortune. It has needed a radical shake-up for years. If the proposal to replace the licence fee with a subscription goes ahead, it will have to do much of what I suggested it should do back in the July thread anyway. Television has changed dramatically in the last two years, never mind the last 20. CBBC and CBeebies will continue to exist for many years to come I'm sure as they both have distinct purposes - indeed arguably of all the BBC TV and radio channels no two channels have a clearer defined purpose than these two. Both channels run too with very little new programming - perhaps one or two shows a day. If they were combined they'd still be a need to produce those shows to cater for all ages, so savings would be minimal. You could then have the single occupancy 25% off and other such discounts applied to the licence fee part.Agree about the B&W Licences - they should have gone at DSO considering in theory very few, if any, legacy B&W TVs could receive the digital signal. However with only around 4500 in force it's not exactly going to plug the gap, but it does close a loophole. Presumably all these folk have B&W phones too. Not sure on the practicality of council tax collection. Firstly surely it's the same tax just collected a different way, so only reframes the supposed problem rather than solves it. Secondly I assume the idea of council tax is that it's for the local coffers rather than part of it being filtered back to national institutions. That will then lead to the "the BBC is not worth it / what am I paying for / time to abolish the BBC" etc, which no doubt is all part if the plan to soften up the public for an eventual BBC break-up/sell-offI don't know but I suspect the light factual stuff may be cheaper to air than reruns of premium drama - so probably more Stacey Solomon, Stacey Dooley etc. BBC licence fee to be abolished in 2027 and funding frozen - London Lite - 16-01-2022 We've had at least 30 years of certain sections of the press going for the BBC for being supposedly not serving the public or at least a section of them. They also did the same for Europe and alas the country is no longer in a political and trading union. But as Aaron keeps on saying, there's an election in just over two years time where another administration could be in charge or even sooner than that if the current PM leaves office in the near future where Nadine Dorries may have to change her mind on her proposals to freeze the licence fee and then scrap it altogether in an attempt to please other sections of the electorate who support the BBC. BBC licence fee to be abolished in 2027 and funding frozen - CCFG - 16-01-2022 I personally think that the BBC will end up having it's channels and iPlayer locked behind a premium subscription model. Having adverts could completely mess up timeslots for some programmes. Should also mention that I've been using BBC services much more recently. I've been re-watching The Office, Shaun the Sheep, Horrible Histories and a couple more boxsets on iPlayer. Edit: Is it bad to say I already disagree with myself? Funding by general taxation seems like the best option to keep the BBC a PSB. If there was a subscription model, the BBC would no longer be a PSB. If there were adverts, the BBC would be destroyed, basically.
