I don't see a problem with that. It would be a problem if it was the other way round!

They don't really have a choice but to announce it publicly just after telling those involved, because as soon as the news is out there's nothing to stop that cast and crew making it public. Better to have the official line sent out to the press than them having to cobble together the facts from the casts social media accounts
The fact that it was leaked about ten minutes before the Press Centre statement was released tells you all you need to know, really!

Joe post_id=16038 time=1622648800 user_id=1035 Wrote:I must admit, I was pretty surprised to see the news today. Holby City has just always been there in the schedules for much of my life. In fact, I was a little surprised it's only been 23 years, so well established does it seem. *I've seen a few episodes! Though the shows are related, I do think it's quite different to Casualty – different characters, different setting (in reality even if not on paper, it does feel distinct!), different timeslot (weekday evening is very different to Saturday night), different style.

It is surprising, perhaps, how many old programmes there are around these days - not just dramas but things like Strictly, The Apprentice, I'm A Celebrity, Takeaway and others have all been running for nearly twenty years which is a huge length of time. If you look back at similar dramas, too, not many have lasted as long as Holby has - Dixon of Dock Green lasted 21 years, Z Cars eighteen (with two spin-offs which were, like Casualty and Holby, running simultaneously), Heartbeat eighteen. It's had a bloody good run.

It's clearly not very nice for the cast and crew of Holby but by that regard you couldn't axe any programme if you needed to keep people in jobs. For what it's worth, my mum still watches Casualty but hasn't watched Holby for years - she used to, but stopped watching it around 2005 when my grandmother died, as she wasn't in the mood for watching programmes about surgery and serious illness, and never got back into it. Seemingly Casualty's alright because A&E is a different thing.

I agree, Steve, and while my heart goes out to the actors and crew, I think it's worth remembering that no show is guaranteed. I think as a freelancer of any kind, you know the plug could get pulled any day, and 6 months is decent notice.

Holby City to end - Brekkie - 03-06-2021

Most actors would be delighted with six months guaranteed work. I doubt many are contracted much beyond that as in these sort of shows it is usually an annual renewal.

It's the long term unknowns behind the scenes who of course will be most affected. As easy as it is to say there is a strong and growing industry in the area it is never easy being forced to change jobs.

Jac (Rosie Marcel) was the most recent to leave and the quality since hasn't been there. They haven't been able to cast actors of the same calibre.

Another thing that will be missed is that Holby was used for former EastEnders actors to stay employed in the same complex, Davood Ghadami (Kush) was recently cast as a new cast member.

As a big fan of the series for years, I've found it an incredibly hard watch in the last 12 months or so. Both Holby and Casualty I cannot remember being at a more lower point than they are now.

Holby has seen too many good characters leave. There was a period around late 2018 and early 2019 where Zosia, Bernie and Frieda, three good characters, especially the last two left, and they were a miss. Then Serena went, but at least there was still Jac and Ric, who were holding it together.

After Ric went, for me, they couldn't afford to lose Jac unless they brought at least one of the other people who had left back. They haven't done that and what we've seen is some really ridiculous stories with some of the cast who are left. I don't like what they have done with Dom (that crazy scene where a group of lawyers entered a boardroom in an overly dramatic way) Henrik or Sasha either. I generally think the cast is generally the worst it's ever been at the moment.

Then you have the whole Cameron storyline that dragged on for far too long. I actually fast forwarded over the bits with him in it as I got so sick of it being dragged out so far. Then the recycled story of a parent taking the blame to save their child happening twice in a few weeks with Max and her son followed by Sahira doing exactly the same.

As for Casualty, like Holby City, pretty much every week patients in the hospital fit into one of the below categories
1) Connected to someone working in hospital
2) Happen to be going through something in their private life the same as a character they interact with
3) Happen to have the same health problem as someone working in a hospital. who normally ends up treating them
4) Are someone working in the hospital.

Casualty is not immune from stupid stories either, whether it's the (aged up) Grace Beauchamp learning how to do a surgical procedures in the middle of nowhere on her own based on watching a video on YouTube, or Jan's wife as a police officer being able to click her fingers and put everything in place to transfer her son, or people deciding to leave and leaving straight away without any notice, the realism stakes are at an all time low.

Neither of them are dramas anymore, they've been subject to increased soapification which has really not been a positive thing. At their best they were dramas. Now they're just another soap, all be it in a longer once weekly episode than the traditional ones.

It's sad that Holby is gone, but in reality the Holby many of us enjoyed has been dead for a while.

When I first heard the news, I was initially shocked and saddened, and thought the cancellation was too harsh. Upon reflection, I now think potentially its for the best, as it has burned itself out the way of Brookside.

In the past few years, virtually all staff members have carried out unethical/gross misconduct procedures on patients with no consequences, a significant proportion of doctors working at the hospital are murderers, again many are addicts to drugs/alcohol, one doctor has carried out magical, scientifically inaccurate pioneering procedures on patients that can't scientifically exist, there has been a gun siege and massive power cut, all patients recover the same day from their procedures (I mean, you can have a colostomy, have it reversed, and then be back on the wards the week after!).... All on the NHS.

Unless they did a hard reboot and start from scratch, where else is there for Holby City to go?

It's strange that in the UK, medical dramas aside from Holby and Casualty are not that common whereas you look at the US, there's shows like New Amsterdam, Chicago Med, The Good Doctor, The Resident and Grey's Anatomy. Compare that to thrillers and crime dramas where you have plenty of options.

Holby City to end - Brekkie - 04-06-2021

Yes but apart from Greys Anatomy most of those have only run a few series. In terns of hours per year Holby and Casualty is equivalent to four network series a year.

I wonder if any of the soaps might be in trouble over the next decade? The two Australian shows on C5 definitely have a charmed life. Neighbours has been moved to a secondary channel for some time down under, with Channel Seven showing Home and Away very erratically. Neither get amazing figures over here either.

Holby City to end - Brekkie - 04-06-2021

Home and Away has not so much picked up but as Seven's ratings have fallen more significantly for the shows after it it looks much more stable in the schedules now and is now more frequently their highest non-news show of the night.

To appease (and presumably help transfer the fans across), I expect the BBC executives are now hurriedly talking to the casts of Casualty and Holby City to see if anyone in Casualty is interested in leaving to work out any gaps in the cast and anyone in Holby City is interested in relocating to Cardiff.

I wouldn't be surprised if they announce a name or two in the next few weeks who will be moving across to Casualty.

They could even move someone to Doctors - and create their own MCU for BBC medical dramas!

Anyone else hoping they'll go out with an almighty literal bang that levels the entire building, which will then feed into the next episode of Casualty? Or will they just redeem Dom, tie up a few other loose ends, and bring back Nigel from Eastenders to do a "And so life at Holby City continued as per" voiceover?

Or they could do a Waterloo Road - close Holby and move everyone over to St James's which for some reason gets all Scottish guest actors instead of Welsh as on Casualty...

Holby City to end - JAS84 - 04-06-2021

Aren't both of those options only possible if Casualty was axed? Can't close or destroy the hospital if the other show set there is continuing.

Holby City to end - IndigoTucker - 04-06-2021

Holby AAU and Darwin are now on a different campus to the A and E (messes up the previous crossover continuity). There was a throwaway line and onscreen metal sign saying as much a while back.

Only issue is Holby and Doctor's don't exist in the same reality, we saw in a 2017 episode Al travel to Bristol and they didn't call it Holby, when Jan Pearson moved over she wasn't called Kath Fox, good idea but don't see it happening. Could a set move to Call The Midwife to update the London Hospital set
