BBC World Countdown, much longer than closing of BBC News at Ten on Friday.
https://youtu.be/ywI9csbIxTw
Was this only aired on Saturday on World? The domestic version was aired twice only, one before The Papers (not the ending of the Ten) and another was at 00:00.

I think this sombre theme is better than the music they used in the montage opening/closing on Friday.

Yes, it would work well I think - it's beautiful and sombre music while also being very clearly BBC News:

https://youtu.be/Wk758bbfn8E

They ran normal countdown on nc before news at ten
It’s a still of the portrait of the Duke with the filler music.

I have to say it would work well... Until the last 10 seconds or so and then it's a disaster waiting to happen. It sounds like a heartbeat monitor coming to a sudden stop!!!

I'm not sure if these full numbers were posted already already, but Deadline reported the BARB overnight figures. The public service broadcasters’ average audiences between 19:00 and 23:00 on Friday 9th versus Friday 2nd were:

BBC One
April 9: 2.41M
April 2: 2.56M

BBC Two
April 9: 340,000
April 2: 980,000

ITV
April 9: 1.34M
April 2: 3.39M

Channel 4
April 9: 1.62M
April 2: 1.77M

Channel 5
April 9: 900,000
April 2: 880,000

In addition, we know from the BBC and other sources, that Channel 4 peaked with Googlebox attracting 4.2 million viewers.

The timelapse shots in this are still a bit too fast for the music, really. I think the domestic version had some nice sweeping helicopter shots instead, or at least the short bit that we got to see did.

Interesting article from Roger Mosey.

Also I did actually re-read the section in one of the chapters from his book released a few years back by now about the Queen Mother's death over the weekend and having read about some of the issues from 2002, it was clear that BBC desperately wanted to make sure they didn't make them again this time
The BBC have a habit of somewhat overcorrecting their mistakes so wouldn't be surprised if when the Queen dies it just gets a brief mention at the end of The One Show.

If it happens during Eurovision expect Norton to pipe up "Queen's on the slab, tune to the News Channel, anyway song number 9, some nice boys in spandex pants from Moldova. Don't forget to drink to Terry." Meanwhile the flashing images and obit astons fight it out for who gets on screen first.

I joke, of course. I hope!

You and I aren't bedfellows on much, especially politically, but you've highlighted the crux of the issue - Friday played out as it did ultimately because of the colour of a tie worn 19 years ago by a newscaster who is no longer with is.

Fast forward to 2021 and even Laura Kunessberg ditched her otherwise "sober" trademark red coat for a black number.

Oddly Look North are still using the sombre version of the opening titles, despite the fact that the whole bulletin was basically interviewing people drinking pints and having their hair cut

100k complaints about the coverage. Have these people have nothing better to do? They have a right to complain if they feel it necessary but... Bizarre.

It cost £1.20 for a day.

BBC still passed itv in viewing figures?

And doesn’t Gogglebox normally trump ratings on a Friday night?

Sadly Friday night tv isn’t what it used to be

I think if you pay for a service you expect it.

Actually I think this highlights the whole argument to move to optional subscription. The BBC have become complacent. They take the license fee payer for granted.

If our public broadcaster was forced to work in a "customer-supplier" culture, they would have to consider what their customers wanted, not what they believed was good for them.

The problem, as I see it, is that the BBC does not act in the belief that the license fee payer is a paying customer.

That, fundamentally, is what needs to change.

[mod]A sentence has been removed. No need to mention Jimmy Savile[/mod]

The Graham Norton show has been pulled (as far as I can establish from a cached schedule online). Therefore, an unusually early close, before midnight on BBC One England. Live stream I-Player got the weather as 23:45 on 13th April and also thinking BBC News starts at 23:50 on 13th April rather than 12th!

HIG(More)NFY still ran on BBC Two on what is now yesterday evening.

Back to normal then. 'Normal" is the pandemic. People wanting normal normal - you'll have to wait.
(In fact we should not be at normal since we are in an eight-day mourning period and therefore it is inappropriate to be going to normal until after the funeral day is over. At least according to me, that wants every channel totally cancelled and no news except Prince Philip for the whole week. As far as I can see, the mourning period just seems to involve some flags being flown at half-mast, rather than any proper national mourning with shops closed etc.)

Nice article which makes some interesting points. I've noticed a bit of a Twitter silence from a few BBC people who are usually pretty quick to defend it.

Slightly disappointed that Mosey doesn't mention Martine Croxall in his praise of the coverage. She isn't one of the regular faces of BBC News on BBC One (the casual BBC One viewer probably wondered who the hell she was as she never introduced herself and wasn't astoned) but it speaks volumes that they didn't wheel in the in the more senior presenter who was surely available an hour before the One.

I don't understand that the coverage of Duke of Edinburgh's death is not a service. Cat A deaths don't happen very often (thankfully) but when they do the BBC should be there to lead the coverage. The BBC were right to pull all their television services together excluding CBBC and CBeebies. I also think it was right to pull together 1 speech programme used on all BBC Radio Stations. I believe this also gives heads of output to check the content coming up for the next few hours and days to make sure nothing will go out on TV and Radio that may cause offence (such a joke about the Royal Family or person involved in the story).

The BBC is not a customer-supplier model as if you are looking for that kind of model look to BT or Sky. The BBC is the Primary Public Service Broadcaster of the United Kingdom and therefore it has more to it that just making sure EastEnders is on BBC one at 8pm come Hell or High Water.

The licence fee payer is not one size fits all person. But this event is of a national significands and it happens very rarely so if 100K want to complain then let them complain after all there was 2-2.5million not complaining but watching the programmes that were aired.

No change is required.

Yet the BBC was more diverse in their scheduling of the death of Diana in 1997 than in 2021. We live in a period of fragmented broadcasting where viewers expect more tightly targeted output for their demographics than ever before.

There's no issue with bringing them all together for the initial announcement and a short retrospective of his life, but there was no need for the extended output to be simulcast on other channels.

All last Friday did was send linear viewers to Channel 4 on Friday night and others to streaming services.

Comparisons vs 2nd April are not comparing like with like, as 2nd April was not a normal Friday. It was Good Friday bank holiday, although the extent of what a 'normal Friday' is has been changed for the last several months in the pandemic anyway.
