RE: New BBC Sport Graphics - madmusician - 09-07-2022

It’s almost as if a new cricket score bar hasn’t been created as part of the new package, and they’ve just tweaked the old one a bit (new BBC blocks, a hint of a gradient in the yellow bit). Which is bizarre, as we’ve seen the football score bar in the new style, and I don’t quite understand why they couldn’t create a new one for cricket in the same manner.

And I’ll be fascinated to see if tomorrow’s highlights package reverts to the old set (for the astons around the BBC presentation elements - they are using the Sky/world feed graphics for the match edit), as today was a BBC Sport in-house production and tomorrow is a Whisper production.

The full time score graphic:

Also just noticed that the width of the 'highlight' bars are different:

RE: New BBC Sport Graphics - telebox2001 - 11-07-2022

How come the picture degraded to SD at the end of the England game just there? Was that a switch to the regions taking control?

RE: New BBC Sport Graphics - Michael - 11-07-2022

You're all being very charitable. They are awful, awful graphics and whoever signed them off should be ashamed.

RE: New BBC Sport Graphics - harshy - 12-07-2022

You are right Michael these graphics aren’t great at all, the top part takes up too much space with a colour gradient, the text and the weights of the font do not seem right either and from what we seen seems inconsistent like the bbc logo boxed off, not boxed off.

BBC Sport Wales using the new graphics in Twitter videos

RE: New BBC Sport Graphics - thomalex - 12-07-2022

I don't mind them personally but surprised the icon doesn't seem to feature at all, I thought we may see it in the titles for example.

Currently the app has an icon which doesn't seem to be referenced anywhere

Just watching The Super League Show earlier with the old graphics and everything just seems that much slicker.

I can see them being tweaked significantly by the time the new football season comes round.

The graphics have made it the golf. Being diplomatic, they're not great.

The world feed graphics are being used on the action, which have also had a retrograde update with a font that looks like a Microsoft Office default font being added. The BBC not showing the permanent scoreboard in the corner.

Think the new logo has debut on the generic titlecard style (correct me if I'm wrong if that is the old logo).

That -5 is way too big

I really don't think the package is that bad. Overall it fits in with the gradient look of the whole rebrand and (provided the gradient fades on, and doesn't stretch on) the animations are quite nice.

Agreed. Though I think it's a step down on the last package, I overall quite like the current set - and I'm somebody who usually doesn't like gradients or drop shadows. There are a few inconsistencies and weaknesses - the football score counter really doesn't fit in with the rest of the look and we've carried over the very basic, quite cheap looking title endboard from the previous look - but they are overall not a bad package. I also like the return of a bit of non-yellow colour for different tournaments - other than Wimbledon, that was rarely seen with the last two looks.

The issue is the gardient effect is something the harks back to the 90s.    It's the sort of thing I used to create on my Amiga, and this feels that cheap too.

RE: New BBC Sport Graphics - RhysJR - 14-07-2022

A TV debut for the Sport icon here?

PS I can't see why iPlayer/Sounds/Sport have coloured text and a black background with channels using plain black text without a background

PPS Didn't even notice the use of the Wimbledon gradient rather than the Open gradient.

RE: New BBC Sport Graphics - SuperSajuuk - 14-07-2022

I didn't mention it at the time, due to being so busy, but I did notice on the exit credits of Wimbledon that Moov was involved in the graphics. As we know, Moov was responsible for the frankly terrible "on screen graphics" used in the BBC Snooker coverage (ie full-width always-on scoreboard and a pointless transparent black box below it). So the fact that they're randomly using gradients does not surprise me, as they're probably trying to "innovate" while doing it badly.
