Sport is part of a TV offering that is itself an incentive to sign up for the free delivery that really drives their revenue. Outside of France (where they jumped in to grab League 1 rights after a collapse in the market), they’ve picked up good (but not top tier) events that other broadcasters didn’t want to pay as much for as they had in the past (most of their Tennis), or already had enough of (Premier League). They’re not going around trying to outbid others for rights that are in high demand. They paid a huge amount for the NFL in the US, but it’s still the worst package of games that network television didn’t want because it lost money on them.
Perhaps they’ll change their strategy in the future, but right now, selling these rights to C4 is a bit of a bonus that will gain them more income than they’d loose, along with a nice bit of promotion and very good PR.

Interesting turn of events - not sure the 7 figure payout will be rewarded though as the last minute nature of it means people just won't be as aware of it as they are a Wimbledon final on the BBC and those already watching will probably stick with Amazon.

Seems someone at BT has put the wrong BUG on the Digital/Online feed, on the app the stream says BT Sport 1 whereas when you watch on other feeds/on TV it still says 'BT Sport 1 HD'. Either that or the Online feed is just in very good standard definition... :roll:

I can only assume it's a deliberate decision - I guess because screen size, bandwidth limitations, etc might mean that not every viewer is watching in HD.

Somebody needs to tell BBC Radio Wales (and presumably many other BBC stations) tomorrow's highlights have been cancelled - they were still advertising them during the 1300 sports bulletin.
I think with the ad breaks a problem is quite likely on Channel 4's end. The ad breaks were often not perfect during the Paralympics (especially being too long and missing some action) so they will need to be on the ball a bit more tonight.
Have Channel 4 ever shown able-bodied tennis before?

So would the BBC not actually got as far signing a contract for the highlights then, or is this just a cancellation clause available to either party, either with or without penalties?
Bit late to redesign the set…
(EDIT: I'm sure Channel 4 will generously agree to give all their ad revenue to grass roots tennis as well…)

But now they get a great shop window for what they’re doing on free to air. They will reach people who didn’t know they existed and get a chance to showcase their coverage. Clever move really. Win-win for everybody!
