Despite the shaky start, I suspect Prime Video has done a lot of good for the profile of tennis in the UK (quick search suggests it's available in 8 million households). And it's cheaper than the (regular price of) NowTV, for example. They've sold a highlights package to the BBC and it's free live on the radio. If there were no free to air radio rights, perhaps it would be more of an problem. Good news for the BBC getting the highlights of the final but when was the last time BBC Sport covered the US Open on TV? The Sport Thread - Newshound47 - 10-09-2021 Amazon’s coverage is considerably better than Eurosport’s efforts which is why I am disappointed they still have two of the grand slams for the foreseeable future. The Sport Thread - william - 10-09-2021 Should add that the final promo throughout tonight's Prime Video coverage has been "live and exclusive"… Anyone know which year(s) ITV did the Champions Tennis from the Royal Albert Hall? Think it was quite a while ago now… EDIT: 2014 apparently, ITV4. The Sport Thread - RhysJR - 10-09-2021 BBC highlights confirmed for Sunday at 13:45, https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00102mz Have to echo the above comments on the Prime coverage being very good. The only minor gripe has been my internet being tempramental (less of problem in the Paralympics last week for example) and more widely a lack of promotion arguably of their coverage. thebigdog2020 post_id=38891 time= user_id=1596 Wrote:Good news for the BBC getting the highlights of the final but when was the last time BBC Sport covered the US Open on TV? More widely, how often has the US Open ever been on FTA TV in the UK? I can't remember it ever happening in my memory (last 15 years or so) being on Sky, Eurosport and now Prime in that time. Well done for linear TV getting a highlights deal, it's probably a similar scenario to Sky sharing the Cricket World Cup with C4 a few years back. I still think there's numerous technical issues with live events being online-only, and the "it's free if you have Amazon" is surely the same as saying that F1 is "free if you have Sky". It's only inclusive to existing customers, non-customers need to take another extra subscription (free trials aside) The Sport Thread - RR - 10-09-2021 A brief look shows that the finals were live on BBC Two in 1992. Can't see anything since. It was a bit shakey the first year and picture quality not great initially but it is much improved since. For me Eurosport's coverage of sport overall has actually got worse since Discovery took them over, even if their portfolio has generally improved. The Sport Thread - News Engineer - 11-09-2021 Channel 4 to show Emma Raducanu’s US Open final live tonight https://twitter.com/matthughesdm/status/1436593898596577281?s=21 Wonder what happens to the - heavily trailed - BBC highlights tomorrow? The Sport Thread - Jeff - 11-09-2021 News Engineer post_id=38980 time= user_id=729 Wrote:Channel 4 to show Emma Raducanu’s US Open final live tonightOn one hand, the BBC would probably be pretty peeved that Amazon didn't offer them the opportunity to show the final live. On the other hand, they have a packed schedule tonight between the Last Night of the Proms, Match of the Day and the premiere of the Amy Winehouse doco on BBC Two. As such, don't know they would have been able to play scheduling switcharoo in order to fit it in The Sport Thread - Transmission - 11-09-2021 Channel 4 paying the big bucks but it should be a huge audience. Good gesture by Amazon (which they can afford, of course). https://twitter.com/martynziegler/status/1436594683388518403 The Sport Thread - harshy - 11-09-2021 It will be interesting to compare a 1080p60 amazon picture versus an interlaced 1080i25 picture from Channel 4. The Sport Thread - Newshound47 - 11-09-2021 The BBC wouldn’t have been able to air it in the manner Channel Four are doing anyway. Channel Four are taking the Amazon production with its branding and commentators and mentions of Amazon on screen (How they going to deal with Ad breaks through). The BBC could never have done that so they would have had to buy the rights and also mount its own production at short notice. The Sport Thread - Jonny - 11-09-2021 Newshound47 post_id=38997 time= user_id=1854 Wrote:(How they going to deal with Ad breaks through)During the match? Short ad breaks during natural breaks in play that occur after an odd number of games have been played/end of set, I would assume. The Sport Thread - steely12 - 11-09-2021 The BBC - always the loser. Congratulations to Channel 4 for getting 15 million viewers upwards tonight. |
