I think the BBC coverage today has been really quite special and they should be proud. They've struck the tone, delivery and presentation beautifully.
A few things I noticed presentation wise;
- The initial news seems to have dropped at 12pm or 12:01pm. The 'Trundle Cam' into the midday news captured journalists literally running across the newsroom to get the story to air and I imagine to literally grab Martine Croxall's black jacket!
- If you watched the post headline footage carefully, you can just about make out that Martine seems slightly spooked... The news of Prince Philip will have been visible to her instantly from the wire feeds in her desk and she knew what was about to happen... Note for the first 7 minutes of the 12pm hour she was not wearing her black jacket.
- The most impressive part of today for me was Martine Croxall. If you listen carefully to the audio on the BBC News Channel, at approximately 12:07-12:08pm, pictures were playing footage of Prince Philip narrated by Martine. At the same time, there were floor managers / staff walking on to set to help Martine change into her black jacket. You can literally hear her necklace being removed and her jacket going on while she was still reading the autocue! The viewers would never have known. All that was audible were a few scuffs of the mic and creaks of the floor from people entering and leaving the set.
- All the years Martine has put in to 'The Papers' (and other slots) means that her talent for improvisation and coping in unpredictable situations meant she was prime candidate to be able to deliver this news confidently and with gravitas. I thought she was absolutely terrific.
- I'd love to see more of the BBC Orchestral Countdown.

Interesting to note Radio 1 has gone presenterless as of midnight & is back to airing instrumentals of songs about 2-10 years old. Radio 2 has OJ Borg on air with music featuring actual lyrics.
Considering the 4 hour speech programme Radio 1 played as part of the Radio Network this afternoon, would an overnight simulcast of 1 & 2 really been that bad?

Although I eventually settled more on ITV News as they day wore on, the BBC was flawless in its handling of the initial announcement on TV. Martine was utterly professional in what must have been incredibly difficult circumstances. Even though they have rehearsed for this moment for years, in the moment it must feel very different indeed knowing that you have the eyes of the nation on you for an announcement that will be remembered for years to come.

For me, the standout presenters throughout the whole day have been Martine Croxall and Mary Nightingale. Both absolutely superb. The presenters that came later had the benefit of time to prepare. I think an honourable mention should also go to Lucrezia Millarini for handling the initial announcement on ITV. OK, she wasn't as polished as Martine, but then she has less experience and wasn't broadcasting immediately before the announcement either. So, credit where it is due - and to every single one of the technical and journalistic teams who have worked hard behind the scenes to make today's coverage possible.

Going back to the straps used and I think one word can make all the difference. ITV were advising people to turn over for "Breaking News", as were UKTV, which I think is more appropriate than "Major News" as used on CBBC/CBeebies. I think it's for the viewers to decide whether it is a major news story.

Surprised the sombre dance music tailed off towards 11pm/midnight even though Danny howard was still doing short links. The mix of music became a bit, er, eclectic. (Tiga's Sunglasses At Night from 2001, anyone?!).
Personally think what they are offering is better than Radio 2.

Just to reflect for a moment on branding and the overall design of today's output, I think ITV News was absolutely outstanding today and wins hands-down. Their virtual studio at ITN proved its value today as they were easily able to transition between different formats. The graphics were also very tasteful and I think the 7pm special with Julie and Phillip was outstanding. To have sofas together with branded cushions and mugs during the midst of what must have been a hectic day just shows what fantastic attention to detail the team at ITN have.

I noticed the bbc news flipper was just showing the website address between 12pm and the news being announced, they obviously had some news of it at 12 as people have mentioned you could see people running around the newsroom when the trudlecam was moving but had to be absolutely sure before anything went to air.

I personally am a royalist, but even I've tired of the news being repeated ad nauseum. The guy had a cracking innings and died peacefully. But we also have a country still in a Covid lockdown. Lots of people are still dying before their time. There's already a lot of doom and gloom and I genuinely believe the BBC were wrong not to provide an alternative. As I said earlier, Channel 4 were absolutely right to make the calls they did, as their entire raison d'etre is to be the alternative (see also: doing kids shows during Diana's funeral) - they'd not be fulfilling their remit by going wall to wall like BBC and ITV have.

True. They are quite relaxing having had it on for the best part of an hour now.
Interesting to note that BBC Sounds seems to have suspended any play-back service of anything broadcast after 12pm. The last Radio 1 show you can click back onto is actually the 'Anthems' block from 10:30am. However the (as it has now been segmented in the schedule page) 11am till midday show is unavailable. Radio 2 has Ken's whole show, because of the changeover time of 12pm. BBC Local stations have the normal schedule for yesterday but all shows are greyed out with no option to listen again.
Presuming this is just an easy thing to switch off, which is what they've done?
