I presume that was a very deliberate thing for the Palace to do...

Not yet as the News Channel-only part hasn't yet come up playable from the BBC News Channel schedule. It would not ordinarily appear but possibly might do so due to it being a special. I am waiting for the BBC Local Radio mid-morning/afternoon programmes to appear, if they ever do due to being truncated, so I can hear how naughty Kent, Sheffield and Stoke previewed the news themselves before being cut to Network.

Just caught up with the transition from the Ten to Newsnight. Firstly, BBC News chose to end the Ten with a montage accompanied by Elgar's Nimrod which was very fitting and effective. I liked the black and white Newsnight titles but thought the accompanying music was rather bland and non-descript. It sounded like some sombre library music or something.

I suspect the news hit news desks at 12pm. There's going to be some delay in getting the news out, proofing the statement and getting it on the air (or in the case of IRN, sending an alert).
In terms of what we did, most of our programmes are currently being done remotely. The presenter on air simply went to our Obit playlist in our system and we ran that for half hour before we could get a senior presenter on air to break to the news and go into full Obit mode. Wasn't me as I wasn't around but a colleague handled it.
It's certainly been a busy day, changing music logs, switching to soft imaging, adjusting play out timings for differing Sky News Radio/IRN news bulletins.
I think all the broadcasters did an admirable job. Its one of those stories you never think you'll have to announce on the air.

It seems to be the case that in amongst all the planning and prep that no one thought Buckingham Place would want to break the news themselves on their own social media.
There were rumours swirling at about 11.30 but I think most people dismissed them given he’d left hospital and there had been rumours constantly over the past few years.
One other reason for the delay is the genuine dilemma of an output editor, who would always have been under the impression any announcement would be through already established and agreed protocols, seeing the tweet.
Is it genuine? Have they been hacked? No one would want to go into full obit mode to have to retract it a few minutes later.
It caught everyone by surprise.

The difference today is news is expected immediately - and immediate is now, not in 5 minutes once everyone has had chance to prepare. Martine being clearly upset by the news was likely because she found out about it as she was reading it, unlike those doing news reports who found out just before going on air.
I think iPlayer only goes back 2 hours but I did catch it earlier. Obviously the headlines go on forever and by the time they zoom in on the studio you can see activity behind Martine which probably wouldn't be worthy of comment if we didn't know what was to follow but it is quite obvious now they were getting the news.
I think also to be fair the BBC seemed to handle this better than they have in the past when they've had to break a story on BBC News then join BBC1 - basically announcing the news once on the news channel then having the slide to announce it on BBC1 and again on BBC News. As the protocol for all broadcasters seemed to be to announce the news, then repeat the announcement it didn't seem unusual.

Surely broadcasters have a safe list of programming for such events just as radio stations have specific playlists.
Talking of programming suspect they'll be some changes to C4 especially over the weekend with documentaries scheduled on fairly recent royal history which may not be appropriate to air. I suspect they'll likely air appropriate tribute shows instead.
