BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Spencer - 25-03-2022

I suppose having them launch in prime-time kind of brings them in line with how they debut the Christmas idents.

I may well be over-thinking it, but it sounds like in launching them in the evening might mean they want to make more of an event of the new idents... as if they're quite proud of them, and think they're worth making a fanfare of, rather than how Oneness launched with a bit of a whimper.

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Moz - 25-03-2022

It would be amazing if they do a transition:

A group of people wander over to a bench, sit on it, stare at the camera. A caption appears "Benchsitters, Dudley". They all get up and b*gger off and then the lens sweeps across bringing in something good!

Usually, the channel, or the BBC as whole, changed their identity on the start of the day or at morning (in case of 1997 and 2021 corporate-wide rebrand as well as channel's rebranding). I don't about other channels like ITV or Channel 4, but i suspect they also rebranded at morning as the "Big Day".

When ITV updated to the 2013 look, they did it after Nightscreen (I believe it lead straight into Daybreak); the first Creates was launched at 9:25am. Currently, the next week's creates idents, are "launched" before the lunchtime news (although as you might expect, given they're now being recycled, there's less than no fanfare).

Exactly what they could have done 5 months earlier. That said though it's been quite interesting seeing some of the Oneness leftovers seemingly improved by just amending the logo on the ident.

While I do agree the Oneness is an interesting concept executed weirdly, looking back at it now, there was a sense of diversity shown in those idents.

I think they were too bland to be 'liked'. Tolerated at most, but not 'liked'. And, again speaking for myself, don't hate them. And the concept itself was at least interesting. The execution was a failure, not the idea. And yeah, it was diverse. You got a lot of different idents, showcasing lots of different people from all across the nations. That much, I can say, I appreciated.

Quote:After all, the Globe, while iconic, was just a globe. Spinning. Sometimes as a model, sometimes digitally generated. There was no music (save for the balloon), and it was just doing it's job. Spinning and being iconic.

The philosophy I've always had aboug good design is that it makes you feel something, with either a still or moving image. The globe ident, in any of its forms, was certainly stirring in its mono-spherical glory, bereft of music and distraction. The name maybe 'British Broadcasting Corporation', but I think the globe was saying that the BBC was 'Britain's Broadcasting Corporation', because things like the World Service, World News, its predecessors in the Imperial Service, all reach far beyond Britain. How many British programmes made by the Beeb are global icons?

That's why the Balloon was my favourite ident, because it communicated that feeling, along with the Britishness of the BBC. You could see it fly over St Michael's Mount, a busy market day in some English town, or over dinosaurs. The last 3 ident packages lacked any real symbolism. It was primarily live action stuff, which is why I found them to be weaker.

I'm curious what the concept is with using a lens as the central device.

With the BBC HD idents which had a similar device it was all about things being enhanced through the diamond, making the picture HD as you will.

I wonder what they are going for with BBC One. The channel changes your perspective maybe, or focusses on what matters?

Thanks for the heads-up once again, Thistle. Much appreciated as always.

One thing that strikes me, though. If they are launching the new look starting with just the original set of new idents next Friday, why on earth could they not have done that back in October as originally planned?
I imagine internal politics may be a factor in not waiting any longer. At least now they can tell the nations and press that non-England idents have been filmed, and will feature on screen in the next couple months.

Hopefully any movement in these new idents will be intentional, and not due to being hand held on a stepladder. Wink

I'm surprised it'll be shown before The One Show. Normally new look idents are shown before Breakfast.

There is no "normally" about it.

Oneness launched immediately after New Year about 12.30am. Circles launched at 10am, as I think Rhythm and Dance did. IIRC the Balloons launched on a Saturday morning, as did the 1991 globe famously before Live and Kicking. I think the 1985 COW actually launched in the evening.

You're correct. 1985 was indeed the last time BBC One launched a new non-Christmas ident package during prime time. 7pm on 18th of February 1985 to be precise, preceding the new series of Wogan. In fact, the COW globe had originally been due to launch in January 1985 but was held back to coincide with the launch of the new schedule.

Yeah but the new branding launched before Breakfast last October.

One thing about the new idents that I do like, is there are elements that move in front of the BBC blocks and ONE. Hope that made sense!

It sure does! Elements moving in front of the BBC Logo and the wordmark ONE is something I never expected!

Ooh that's interesting. I think the circles idents, mainly the original version of the Dog Display ident had the leader dog walk on the BBC One logo.
Tbh it makes the channel logo feel like it's there in real life, like it's part of the scene.
