I’m guessing the wraparound coverage of the England game later might give us a better indication of whether there is going to be a new graphics package for ITV football this season than the community shield did.

I know they’d usually be at the grounds so it’d only get used for highlights, but it all looks a bit basic

So yeah, you would expect it to be sooner rather than later.

The current logo hasn’t really dated in my opinion and they’d struggle to come up with something that works as well. The difficult thing to do was to make the letters sort of symmetrical, which this design sort of achieves.
I think the issue with the football graphics is, they do seem a bit dated, whereas news package still looks pretty good.

I think in general too the ITV Sport generic graphics have always been a bit behind the times when they launched as well - the 2006 versions still in use were somewhat comparable to what Grandstand were using around 2000, whilst the current set of football ones were probably more suited to the noughties.

Well, although the England titles are now starting their fourteenth consecutive season, I don't think last night's match will tell us much - for most of the coverage they used the world feed graphics so there's no point launching a new graphics package if you're only going to use it to caption the pundits and nothing else. More likely if they were going to introduce one they'd do for the FA Cup when that kicks off, as that will be entirely ITV produced and so they can apply the graphics everywhere, and it's a new contract so it marks a new era for ITV.

The BBC set to benefit from no live TV coverage of Ronald's expected return to Man Utd on the 11th Sept with a 3pm kick off against Newcastle. They've now switched their 5 Live commentary to that, displacing Leicester v Man City which I'm surprised isn't a TV game itself.

Well, Sky and BT can't have known how significant that Utd game would be when they picked the TV matches. Ronaldo rejoining the Red Devils was very sudden and unexpected.

Arsenal v Norwich is a bit more significant than it originally would've seemed when the picks were made as well. It's all the more noticeable this season after being spoiled with every match on TV for the last season and a half.

Looking at the matches picked it certainly seems the case of sacrificing bigger matches early in the season to meet the relevant quotas with Palace v Spurs, Chelsea v Villa, Leeds v Liverpool and Everton v Burnley the matches shown live.
Personally not too surprised about the Man Utd v Newcastle game as that would be picked more on nostalgia, but Leicester v Man City seems like a big fixture not to air given more recent history.

Anyway, this is always the case that weekend (and the one two weeks later) because they make their picks before the Champions League draw, and that means they can't pick all the big teams because at least two of them won't be able to play on Sunday because they'd be playing in the Champions League on Tuesday. Leeds vs Liverpool is on the Sunday, but when they picked it they did it with the proviso that it would swap with Chelsea vs Villa if Liverpool were playing on the Tuesday (but they're not). That's just about alright (though not very convenient if you had tickets and it swapped at the last minute) but if you had Man U and Man City in the mix for televised matches as well, that would be a right juggle. So better not to pick them all that weekend.
And as you suggest, it's also much better for the broadcasters to get all the quotas filled as early in the season as they can, so they can show what they want towards the end of the season and not have to show random Norwich or Watford matches as they need to show them X number of times. Also as well there's usually the final test match that weekend (as is the case here) and the Ryder Cup on the equivalent weekend two weeks later, so Sky are happy to have a slightly smaller Premier League offering that weekend so it doesn't detract too much from those big events and cannabalise their audience.
I always really enjoy this weekend, as it happens. The more matches, and the more big matches, that take place at 3pm on a Saturday the better, because I love that being the epicentre of the weekend's football and hearing goals raining in on Final Score or Five Live, and then a big massive Match of the Day in the evening with all the big teams on it. A proper old school Saturday of football. Wish we had more of them.
And of course it's easy to say they should have picked Man U vs Newcastle because there's now a story attached to it, but there wasn't when they picked that weekend, at the time it just looked like a pretty straightforward home banker.
