UTV - Ballyboy - 10-07-2021 Never heard of Louise convery before? UTV - Stanley Matravers - 11-07-2021 I continue to be astounded by every passing day that the "UTV" brand limps on, in a few limited places (e.g. local programme trailers, news bulletin name, etc) on a station that has been 99% identified on screen as "ITV" for quite a while now. It's right up there with my amazement at the continued existence of the "local" TV channels. *Surely* they'll finally switch off the "UTV" life support machine by the end of this year?! ? UTV - Rdd - 11-07-2021 Why? It’s clearly not bothering anyone at ITV and it neatly avoids a problem about what exactly to rebrand things that have “UTV” in their name as, and avoids negative local press coverage about “UTV being closed down”. It probably will get rebranded at some point, probably when all of the regions get their next update. But why spend money on a specific rebrand at this stage in this brandings lifetime? Please show me the part of my post where I said anything about spending money on a specific rebrand? ITV-branded trailer endboards, for example, already exist. It would only take a minor re-edit of the final seconds of the existing UTV Live/Life title sequences to fully rename those programmes. And so on. It would therefore cost (almost?) literally nothing to introduce such changes in NI. For such changes to have not occurred (or, at least, a (short) timeframe be set for them to occur) in the same breath that the decision was made that general "UTV" continuity would not be making a return will forever perplex me. UTV - This is UTV - 11-07-2021 I for one, just like many in the UTV region dont want to see the UTV name/brand dumped, whereas it appears the majority of folk outside the N.I. region are so keen on UTV being consigned to history. The best way forward for the duel branded ITV/UTV region would be to update local promos into the same style as the national promos, but still with the UTV name. I would also introduced those ready made "UTV: Part of ITV" break bumpers full time...as they have already been made might as well use them!!! Also use the UTV dog on regional opt outs. I think you're right - people in Northern Ireland feel an attachment to the UTV brand rather than ITV, and I think this constant 'English ITV' (maybe being slightly controversial?) being shown on UTV hasn't helped. We have retained a lot of local programming compared to the rest of the network, however with the slip up in continuity surely ITV should be looking at their regions more like the BBC - England, Wales, Northern Ireland and in the case of Border this could be a opt out region with local voices too. They already have news staff for all areas, ITV have already shown that UTV can have a local pre-recorded voice overs with Gillian & Julian and more recently into the UTV news. I don't see how we can't have UTV idents slotted in when playout is playing an ITV ident and a local voice over. I also cannot see any reason why UTV cannot have their 'DOG' reinstated, sure this is just triggered the same way the ITV DOG is placed. I'm happy to be corrected if any of the items above cannot take place due to some technological reason, but I don't believe it should. As mentioned by This is UTV idents/breakbumpers etc all still could show the 'Part of ITV' to make some sort of dual branding. But again the UTV region has and in my opinion will always be a unique part of the network. Agree with you, UTV is a NI icon and to see the brand retired in favour of ITV is not right. I would think, as you pointed out that promos (while in the national style) using the local UTV branding rather than ITV would be right. Also, the UTV DOG used on opt-outs would be better of using instead of the ITV DOG, especially UTV Live and Life. Overall, in my opinion, UTV should be preserved for future generations to come (national branding or not) rather than being Londonified. And I for one, just like many others in the UTV region don't care about the UTV name/brand being dumped, as long as the programmes we want to watch are still available at the same times on the same channel number as before then that's good enough for us. Considering its been 15 months since UTV all but disappeared on screen and there has been next to no mentions of concern or horror in the public domain shows that viewers don't seem to give a toss if the channel is called ITV or UTV as long as they can tune in for local news at 6pm and watch their soaps they're not fussed. I think the next ITV rebrand will be the opportunity for them to completely end the UTV branding and it will be fully ITV. I don't think it's the relationship with England that's the issue. Local people in UTV 'got' the sensitive nature of NI broadcasting. If you watch UTV now, you know that it is an 'English' TV channel with branding/voiceovers/trailers etc. Where UTV were able to be 'ITV' with that local knowledge. We know that Coronation Street, Emmerdale are English programmes but just that small part of invision or later pre-recorded continuity made the programmes feel more local. In the above - correct me if I'm wrong - HTV became on air 'ITV Wales' with several different idents and local continuity continuing for a while to then become just ITV. Grampian became STV with just the name change - they still produced local news in the Grampian region, and still had at least Scottish voice overs. UTV just seems left out on it's own - is it UTV? or ITV? or both? we get UTV news but then we get ITV ident into UTV news? Just confusing and in my opinion needs addressed soon. As said previously, tomorrow night will be a test for ITV continuity with the UTV opt outs. It's also been 15 months that the London booth have been recording UTV opt outs, yet still are making obvious and frankly embarrassing errors junction after junction, week after week! Zero sign of improvement by the whole London team, and why....one simple reason....a complete lack of due care and attention. How much longer should us N.I. viewers just put up with this 2nd class service from the London booth? By having Belfast based announcers, this addresses every single problem the London team keep having with UTV opt outs. How about a Belfast based announcer, who comes in once a week and records 7 days worth of opt out announcements for the idents, end credits and local promos. London playout can then play these files before UTV programmes and saves the London booth a job having to pre record things they don't have a clue what they're talking about, and gives UTV it's local voice back. 2 birds 1 stone with that proposal!! Appreciate Northern Ireland is not the same as an English region, but is it so different to Granada Reports still being shown on a channel that hasn’t been called Granada in more than a decade? Or an STV ident before ITV News? I think people aren’t as easily confused as you fear. Of course, if ITV want to consolidate and just have one brand in NI, you know which one it’ll be…. UTV - Stanley Matravers - 14-07-2021 The next step after the "temporary" (as was originally intended) use of ITV network continuity in NI should only ever have been either... A: Full 100% return to some form of "ITV-esque" style of "UTV" station branding, as was the case 2016-2020. B: Full 100% permanent "ITV" branding in NI, with the UTV channel name being entirely consigned to history for all remaining purposes. C: Some form of "dual branding" akin to the ITV1 hearts era of circa 20 years ago (e.g. a big UTV logo with a small ITV logo beneath it, or similar) which would be consistently used for all branding elements. What we've actually now got is most of the way to being option B, but with exceptions. To have the vast majority of things only mention solely "ITV" (e.g. the main idents) whilst a few others mention solely "UTV" (e.g. trailers for local opt-out programmes) is a totally knickers "solution". It will continue to bother the heck out of me for as long as it lasts, and I would cheerfully slap the decision-makers who approved the current hotchpotch way of doing things. UTV - UTVLiveAtSix - 09-08-2021 Apologies if you feel me being repetitive, but… Here we go again with the UTV/ITV saga. It just gets more annoying. Just watching on UTV+1 on Freeview. We get a promo with UTV end boards for UTV Life with Pamela, then we get ITV continuity and ident even with ‘Now on ITV’ into Mahon’s Way (again promos through the week with UTV end boards). Can we please have our UTV branding back please! Again apologies if it feels like this is me on here again. But living in Northern Ireland and watching UTV it is really annoying. UTV - Rick - 09-08-2021 Or just stop calling it UTV, remove any trace of the UTV name, and leave everything as ITV, which is kinda the way things are going. ITV are NOT going to suddenly reintroduce UTV back into the world. If ITV rebrand after Christmas when the ITV Creates (possibly) ends and have a new look for the new year, it wouldn't surprise me if they used that opportunity to finally axe all UTV references on screen. |
