Shows they rebooted badly! - Flux - 31-08-2021 Andrew post_id=36959 time= user_id=791 Wrote:Of course has a relaunch of a long running show ever actually worked, or just made the decline quicker, as nobody new switches on, and many current viewers switch off Top Gear is probably the prime example of a successful relaunch. They flipped the original show on its head and created a successful format which is still running today. So it can work. But the odds are definitely stacked against any show that’s in that position because if they were still successful they wouldn’t need a relaunch in the first place. If we’re looking at a failed reboot followed by a failed relaunch, Crossroads has to be top of the list. Rebooted over 20 years after the original series ended, and then swifty relaunched just over a year later when ratings weren’t hitting the highs they’d hoped for. That ill conceived campy amd self aware relaunch, of course, being what finally killed it off for good. Shows they rebooted badly! - Robertclark125 - 31-08-2021 There we go, Crossroads! The original ATV version had a reputation for wobbly sets, and some bad acting. This was true in the early years, when, to save time and I guess money, shows were recorded as live, allowing fluffed lines to be viewed. When, at the behest of the IBA, ATV was reorganised and became Central, in 1982, one of the first things the head of drama wanted to do was scrap Crossroads. He didn't because doing so would've possibly hit Central so hard in the pocket in its first year. Crossroads was sort of rebooted in 1985. As opposed to the previous practice, of the name coming up over a scene at the start of the programme, with a bit of the theme tune, it gained new opening titles (the Austin Maestro titles I call them, as it shows an Austin Maestro travelling to the Motel), and instead of the practice of the end credits coming up, then going left, and the next one coming in from the left, then going up, in a cross, new scrolling up credits were employed. The theme tune was also remixed. But the last throw of the dice came in 1987, when they decided to reboot it again, and called it "Crossroads Kings Oak", a bit of an attempt to include more life in the outer Birmingham fictional suburb the show was set in. More new titles, and a new theme tune were employed, with the eventual plan to drop the Crossroads bit. Instead, the show was axed in 1988. But, as we know, Carlton decided in 2000 to bring it back, and this time it was a hotel, not a motel. But, poor scripts saw the show take a six month hiatus in 2002, and when it returned, the poor scripts, and some questionable acting, remained. The axe fell, and the somewhat ridiculous ending, of a character waking up in the office of a supermarket, having fainted, and dreamt about a TV soap opera called Crossroads, and then seeing all the characters in her dream working in the supermarket, was far fetched, to say the least. It didn't go out on a high, though perhaps it didn't deserve to. I don’t recall there being a huge outcry or demands to bring the snow back. When Clarkson and Wilman brought it back, they brought a totally new show that was very loosely based on the original, and on it went from there. The funny thing is, it took Top Gear until its third reboot after Clarkson, Hammond and May left for the show to find its feet again. Shows they rebooted badly! - Col87 - 31-08-2021 Of course Crossroads was only brought back because ITV lost home and away to channel 5 and needed something for that slot. To be fair when it was originally brought it seemed decent enough but was never going to rate high. That whole period was quite wired though because they tried everything in that 5PM with wheel of fortune basically taking the slot for almost with local news starting as early as 5:30 ( at least in the Tyne Tees region). Crossroads then for a short while was in a 5PM soap hour with the equally fated night and day. The ratings where so bad Blue Peter and the 5PM drama along with Newsround would regularly beat them in the ratings while home and away after been off for year launched at a new 6PM and was doing ok. ITV then seemed to struggle for years in that 5PM slot with Paul O Grady eventually starting to do well but then that ended up been short lived as he then took his show to channel 4 and several live shows where tried in the slot none of them doing that well with Richard Hammond been the best of a bad bunch but he then had that accident and once he was recovered signed a new contract with the BBC so that ruled out his show from coming back. It was only when the Chase started over 3 years later that ITV finally started going well in the 5PM hour after one flop after another but definitely crossroads not working out is what forced ITV to struggle for most of the 2000s. As for top gear I think it was possibly more of a case of the BBC wanting rid. While it probably was not a big ratings draw it must have been fairly cheap to make and had with the motorsport and top gear take two spin offs was clearly doing something right. If it was a poor ratings like claimed I doubt channel 5 would have been interested in it. Although it was probably 5th gear itself experimenting with the format which allowed Top Gear to return a year later and even that first series proved to not to be that good I believe May only joined from series 2 or 3 when it started to be the successful format people know. I would say Top gear found its feet again the series after Evens left as Le Blanc Ried and Harris made a good team. It was only due to Le Blanc leaving to concentrate on his new sitcom what forced them having to bring in a presenting team but yes it proved successful enough to get a move to BBC one. It’s now been off our screens far longer this time than the original gap. Actually ITV "fixed" their 5pm ratings grabber long before The Chase came along. Golden Balls did well in that slot and there were a few other examples of programming that they dropped in that lasted. Most of it didn't, but Golden Balls did, though it ended when Chase came along. We've had the Crossroads discussion before though, and ITV effectively shot themselves in the foot with the entire saga. They lost Home & Away, invoked their "year long" break clause, and didn't have anything to replace it with. IIRC the show came off the air in June 2000, Crossroads wasn't actually commissioned until August 2000 and didn't start filming until October for a March 2001 start. ITV daytime once they lost Home & Away was a horrible mixture of Heaven only knows what until Crossroads came along, and they were lost without H&A. Your right ITV where desperate hence why they often got beat in the Ratings by whatever was on CBBC in the 5:00 slot. I forgot about golden balls to be fair but I also remember them trying all sorts for quite a large chunk of the decade in that slot when crossroads ended and when golden balls was not on including reviving supermarket sweet and the price is right with both flopping. Anthony Cotton getting a chat show which proved a massive fail as well. I can’t remember if Fearne Britain’s I’ll fated chat show was another flop they tried or if that was channel 4. But certainly at one point in about 2005 and part of 2006 they getting beat by all sides in that 5 o clock hour with the successful revamp of channel 4 afternoons CBBC still having success with blue Peter on BBC one and the Weakest link still doing decent on BBC Two. Amazing really just 2 years later probably helped by BBC one losing neighbours and golden balls then the chase doing well ITV then started doing better than BBC one.Col87 post_id=36979 time= user_id=1400 Wrote:Of course Crossroads was only brought back because ITV lost home and away to channel 5 and needed something for that slot. Gen III suffered from having no connections at all to the previous cast. UTV usually shows UTV Life at 5:30pm half a hour before UTV Live at Six. The revived Crossroads was sandwiched between CITV and UTV programming. In that case can probably count spooks as well then with Peter Firth the only regular cast member for all 10 series with the rest of the main cast changing at least 4 times. I think only Family Affairs and Dream Team are the only programs to kill off the entire main cast between series ( although family affairs never watched it so just what I seen on clip shows but Dream Team definitely did ) with only one main cast member and 2 extras promoted to the main cast surviving. Dream Team lasted a further two series by doing that.XIII post_id=36961 time= user_id=894 Wrote:Guess Skins falls in that category with completely changing their cast every two years - they got away with it once but not so much the second time around.Andrew post_id=36959 time= user_id=791 Wrote:What always gets airbrushed out of discussions like that is that shows that are riding high at the top of the ratings don’t generally have a relaunch forced upon them Shows they rebooted badly! - XIII - 31-08-2021 Spooks replacing the cast every so often made sense story wise as the world of espionage is very dangerous. Obviously this morning has survived two different changes of presenters and the one Show got a new lease of life when Matt Baker and Alex Jones became the main presenters replacing Adrian and Christine in the Autumn of 2010 ( although Matt was not the original replacement he replaced Jason Manford who only lasted a few months ) and blue Peter has obviously had several relaunches and change of presenters and still going strong. The only other successful relaunch I can think off is crime watch when Nick Ross and Fiona Bruce where replaced by by Kirsty Young and Rav Wilding who in turn got replaced by Jason Mohammed and Sophie Raworth along with a Rugby player. Obviously the relaunch after that with Jeremy Vine and Tina Dahealy moving away from the studio to a mobile police unit and going to short weekly series completely killed the program off. Watchdog is the only other example it must have had several relaunches but the 2010 relaunch with Anne Robinson returning amongside Matt Alwright and Anita Rani ( who was then replaced by Chris Hollins ) seen the program last another 10 years although with Matt the only presenter lasting with the likes of Sophie Raworth ( again she must have done quite a bit in the last decade) Michelle Ackley and Steph McGoven been co presenters over the 10 years.
