Holby City to end - welnat06 - 02-06-2021 Quite surprised by this. I definitely do prefer Casualty but didn't expect Holby to go this soon. I do hope that it will give the writers on the main show the incentive to return to more medical drama based narratives as there were four or five episodes at the beginning of this series of Casualty which felt much more like some of the earlier stuff and in turn really benefitted from such an approach. Holby City to end - Brekkie - 02-06-2021 Will be interesting how they end it considering the world of Holby will presumably still exist in Casualty. Remember the episode Boiling Point? I think I was 8 when that went out. Shouldn't have been allowed to stay up to watch it really but it scared the cr*p out of me at the time. Holby did do a COVID special on their return as well. Can't remember it too well, but the blurb on iPlayer reminded me that it deals effectively with the period in time since the last episode as Rick Griffin coming out of a coma after surgery. If I recall, he was desperate to return to work despite not being fully recovered from his surgery and caught COVID off a patient... https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000pbpc/holby-city-series-22-episode-26 Holby City to end - chris - 02-06-2021 I too haven’t watched Holby for many years and didn’t even realise Ajax Naylor and Ric Griffin had left (I wonder if they knew the writing was on the wall - we all know that it’s hard to keep such massive news a secret in workplaces). But I’m surprised they didn’t just reduce the number of episodes and have a play with the slot with new dramas. Quite a bold move to completely axe it with nothing tried to replace it, but I hope it works. The BBC needs more and more new quality drama to compete with streamers. Holby City to end - UTVLifer - 02-06-2021 According to Hugh Quarshie, an ex-Holby veteran who played Ric Griffin for 19 years until last year, someone I would consider a reliable Holby source has said to the Guardian that... Quote:he was “taken aback” to hear the news and that his former colleagues were “reeling too”, having effectively been given six months notice before they lose their jobs. https://www.theguardian.com/media/2021/jun/02/hospital-soap-holby-city-to-end-after-23-years-bbc-announces I'm sorry for being over dramatic but it just feels wrong that the BBC gave the current cast an hours notice of the show's axing before it was released to the press. That is brutality right there Holby City to end - Brekkie - 02-06-2021 Is brutal but also reality the news would have leaked within hours if they hadn't announced it themselves. Weirdly I can think of two occasions where ex-EE stars were announced as joining other soaps, which then got axed...and they ended up not appearing (not to suggest Davood won’t end up in Holby). Jack Ryder was due to appear in Family Affairs but pulled out when it got axed. And Dean Gaffney was due to join the final iteration of Crossroads but pulled-out when it was swiftly cancelled. Holby City to end - Andrew - 03-06-2021 It’s a very bold move to axe a show that runs 52 weeks a year Assuming the slot is going to be filled by a new drama that ticks regional production boxes rather than just Garden Rescue and stuff, maybe it might have been less risky to just commission Holby for 26 weeks next year instead. Because at the end of the day, the new regional drama isn’t guaranteed to be a success so they would still have Holby to fall back on Holby City to end - Brekkie - 03-06-2021 It is surprising they didn't initially cut it back to test the water for any potential replacement but refreshing to see the BBC take such a risk in primetime. Even when Big Brother was axed (twice) the writing was on the wall on both occasions. Similarly with The Bill. This very much took people by surprise I think - they could at least have given the show a misguided revamp first as the customary warning it's days were numbered. Holby City to end - James Martin - 03-06-2021 I'm pretty sure the cast of the second Crossroads reboot learnt of their demise via the fansite run by Neil Jones of this parish 18 years ago. Neil may correct me on that but I'm sure the Carlton duty office broke the news late on a Saturday. Whilst the BBC struggles to compete with streamers, the majority of "original productions" I come across use flashy production values as a sticking plaster over a weak script and poor performances. The Crown and The Man In The High Castle may be the exceptions here. I tried so many during Lockdown 1 with nothing better to do and couldn't get into any of them. Even Sky One's The Flight Attendant hasn't been able to hold my interest; half of it taken up by the lead character swigging vodka. She's an alco, we get it! The BBC should be able to offer style with substance, which many streaming "originals" lack. Ironically that other forgotten soap Night and Day would be perfect for streaming with all the weird plot twists and stuff. You could argue it was 15 years ahead of its time! They don't really have a choice but to announce it publicly just after telling those involved, because as soon as the news is out there's nothing to stop that cast and crew making it public. Better to have the official line sent out to the press than them having to cobble together the facts from the casts social media accounts And as for only having 6 months notice... 6 months is more than most people get Holby City to end - JAS84 - 03-06-2021 Yeah, in a normal job you often only get a month's notice. Even more recently, there was outrage last year when numerous West End casts and crew found out via social media or press releases that their shows had been cancelled indefinitely and/or the whole staff let go. Granted it was due to Covid, but the way it was handled by some theatres was outrageous. As you say, at least the cast and crew were told in advance in this instance. Regarding Davood Ghadami and other actors, there's always a chance they could step sideways to Casualty if storyliners decide to utilise their characters that way I suppose. It's happened before. Not likely that any of the Holby crew will, though, as the main show is shot in Cardiff and most of them will probably be London based. |
