American Song Contest to launch in 2022 - Jon - 22-03-2022

Melfest is basically an adaptation of the Eurovision format for a domestic audience isn’t it? So it stands to reason than an United States version would be more like that.

American Song Contest to launch in 2022 - Mouseboy33 - 22-03-2022

Variety Magazine published an insightful article about the show and its expected to be a yearly event. They are looking to do it annually and the producers behind Eurovision are directly involved in the creation of the American version and the Executive Producer is British. So if you dont like it......ya cant say the producers dont know anything about Eurovision.

Doesn’t the article say that NBC does plan it to be an annual event?

Cheers!

I'd personally would have gone with "Americavision", "Amerivision" just doesn't sound right.

They both don’t sound right. Particularly to the majority of the potential audience who are unlikely to be familiar with the original brand. Although I’ll admit thanks to the Netflix film and the like the are probably more aware of Eurovision then there would have been a decade ago.

I think one thing in its favour it doesn’t have all any of baggage than it has particularly in the UK. And it’ll will just be a different take on Idol/The Voice formats albeit with an emphasis on the states competing and the songs.

Ratings not great - 2.9m compared to 5.1m for Idol. It's less of a phenomenon than Starstruck. Big Grin

Mouseboy33 post_id=74390 time= user_id=1168 Wrote:Im curious what will be retained from the Eurovision Finale night, Somethings are famous..... will they go live to each state for the results or will that be scrapped in favor of a simplified tabulation process. Im thinking if they are trying easy package and sell this format to other broadcasters most things will be scaled down.

They won't go to the states on the finale night for the same reason there ultimately won't be state-based selection contests to feed into ASC -- the broadcast television system in the United States just isn't built for that.

Most states have multiple affiliates of the broadcast networks, including NBC, each covering a particular area of the state (termed a "DMA" [designated market area] or a "market" for short). There are over two hundred of these regions across the United States, but decades of ownership consolidation has left the vast majority of them as little more than outlets for producing local news, maybe a public affairs or infotainment show on the side if you're lucky, with schedules comprising of nationally syndicated fare outside of the programming provided by their network affiliation. Only twelve local NBC stations are owned by the network, in any case; the rest are owned by third-party broadcast groups (such as Tegna, Nexstar, Gray, and Sinclair). While theoretically the local news talent of these stations could be used for this sort of thing, outside of NBC's twelve owned-and-operated stations, that would have to go through station owners, and there's no guarantee they'd play ball. And not to mention -- who would NBC use between their California O&Os? Or in the 46 states and territories where they only have affiliates? The station representing the state capital? The biggest city?

Complicating matters further is that, owing to the uneven population distribution nationwide, media markets are uneven shapes and sizes, and there are plenty which span multiple states. Take the Omaha, NE, Spokane, WA, and Burlington, NY/Plattsburgh, VT markets on the map below -- to where would allegiances lie? Plus, New Jersey, Delaware, and New Hampshire are part of media markets in other states and don't really have any stations within their borders -- who would represent them?

The finale night won't be simpler just because the producers wanted to change things, the way that American television has been constructed will force the producers to change the finale and voting reveals to at least some extent.

Below is a map of Nielsen's DMAs as of 2018; it's also available as a PDF map you can zoom into here.

Hey Benji
Nice information for those unfamiliar with US affiliate system. Nice summation as well. Hopefully it clarifies the system in North America. Good information. I guess we shall have to see on the night what they do. Im thinking, like you they probably wont go to each state either. Since personally I think that UBC and EV are trying to create a easily "portable" format that a variety of broadcasters can purchase, its likely some things, like that will be scrapped. Even though its a signature of EV. But if they do some sort of a nationwide tabulation, here is wild crazy speculation, they could do regional votes or something from their O&O affiliates. Chicago (WMAQ) handles the central states, NYC (WNBC) handles the Northeast and Miami (WTVJ) handles the south and maybe LA (KNBC) the west coast. Just a thought. Not likely though. LOL

But also keep in mind the jury is made up of people from each state and quite a few work at iHeart Radio stations. So has NBC made an agreement with iHeart Radio stations. Could they intersperse talent from iHeart stations for this? Probably not, its likely to use those station to add the winners song to their playlists. But its Interesting and these big commercial corporations dont do anything for free. LOL. But we'll certainly have to see. I think like you said they will dump that part of show. Would have been cool to see though......ATLANTA calling... or CHICAGO Calling. Big Grin

Similarly to television, most 'local' (commercial) radio stations are in the hands of major station groups these days (including iHeart, as well as Audacy, Cumulus, and so on), and radio is also split into markets (though they don't necessarily line up with the TV ones if I recall correctly). And, again, cost-cutting has led to a reduction in any semblance of local character, especially if you're not in any of the biggest media markets; weekday breakfast and drive-time are the moneymakers, but outside of that, there may be voice-tracking (one on-air host pre-recording continuity and "hosting" a show across multiple markets) or just full-on automated playlists and/or bare-minimum DJ presences at play. It seems most of the iHeart staff on the jury are programming directors as well, which would suggest they wouldn't (and here won't) be seen on-air in any case (again, if they wanted to, they could use on-air talent, where it exists, but that'd likely come at a price.) Like you suspect, I'd imagine it's likely just an arrangement to lean on their expertise and/or get the winner's/finalists' songs on the radio across the country at the end of the contest (similar to how some EBU/Eurovision broadcasters, such as NRK and the constituents of ARD this year, give airtime on their radio stations to their country's Eurovision finalists and/or hopefuls.)

I can't speak to radio as well as I can for TV (though I do volunteer at a college radio station and host a couple shows there), but I do know folks who have been around the radio business for a while, and I'm sure they could corroborate some of these things.

American Song Contest - Jon - 25-03-2022

I’m not sure how the US system stops the programme utilising spokespeople giving out the results of any given state. It would just have to be produced centrally by the production company.

From the article posted earlier in the thread, it sounds like the producers will just pick a few decisive states to have their 12 points read out and the rest will be revealed automatically beforehand.

American Song Contest - Brekkie - 25-03-2022

I can't imagine a US audience sitting through 56 result reveals, especially as they have moved away from separate results shows for almost all their reality shows in favour of a quick reveal attached to a performance show.

American Song Contest - Brekkie - 29-03-2022

To the surprise of no-one this looks like it'll be lucky to make the end of the series, never mind season 2.

Don't think it will never not amaze me that great viewing figures for the UK (population: 67 million) are seen as good in the context of the USA (population: 330 million).
