It's not as if it moved, looking one of the clips above TVS's phone number graphic was in a blue background anyway Presumably they just lived with any ticker graphics, or had Channel Island content amongst the stuff about the south ITV Telethon - Markymark - 13-05-2021 Inspector Sands post_id=12285 time=1620885303 user_id=1003 Wrote:James Martin post_id=12223 time=1620848628 user_id=872 Wrote:- and, again, how did Channel manage to cover up Meridian's numbers? In the case of the Telethon surely they'd just have put a solid caption with their number(s) on it over the one from TVS. It's not as if it moved, looking one of the clips above TVS's phone number graphic was in a blue background anyway I'm not sure. How and when would they have set up the overlay, so it was 'pixel perfect' from the start ? There was no facility for TVS to feed them anything for rehearsal and set up ? I'm also not sure that in 1988 Channel had any frame syncs, so without genlocking themselves to the off air feed from TVS, (that would have been very ropey and risky for such a thing) I doubt they had the ability to overlay captions on that feed. This was all pre the days vision mixers would mop up any minor timing errors, and things like PAL SC/H phase ruled ! One thing is certain, Channel TV's integration into the distribution and contribution network, remains a fascinating topic ! ITV Telethon - Steve in Pudsey - 13-05-2021 Wouldn't Channel have genlocked to TVS routinely to get clean cuts in and out of "network"? Much like say Yorkshire genlocking to Granada to get a clean transition into Coronation Street. As to the phone numbers, I don't see any great compliance issue if a TVS number appeared on Channel? I think this clears up the question of how Channel's network contributions were done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfqGM0XmNek ITV Telethon - Markymark - 13-05-2021 Steve in Pudsey post_id=12291 time=1620889682 user_id=942 Wrote:Wouldn't Channel have genlocked to TVS routinely to get clean cuts in and out of "network"? Before frame syncs, the local company would 'slip'; their SPG (normally by adding or subtracting a line) until it was in phase with the incoming feed. (That's why VTRs etc couldn't be used while that was happening, because their servos would go bananas) That required staff, and an SPG that had that ability. I'm not sure Channel would have had either ? Even then, for overlaying you need to keep your local SPG in exact sync with the incoming continuously. You could lock yourself to the incoming, but the quality of an off air feed (even a 'clean' one that's derived from a strong and stable signal) it's all over the place. There's no way you'd lock your SPG to that. (I'm not even sure you'd do it on a clean stable BT line feed, Mr Bluecortina would know more about that I'm sure) ITV Telethon - Steve Williams - 13-05-2021 RDJ post_id=12226 time=1620849326 user_id=831 Wrote:Just to answer this question and not to take the topic too off course. The numbers are the same across the country. BT was just able to provide the statistics of how many callers there were in each particular region. Easy when there’s one landline telephone exchange for ITV to get call statistics from. Much harder with the advent of mobile phones and many major networks to obtain regionalised stats from, which the networks themselves would likely struggle to get straight away. Yes, I remember on A Song For Europe twenty years ago, when on a couple of occasions they revealed the votes by area, and then mobile and online voting was all put together in one lump. I used to enjoy Record of the Year, but then I would enjoy anything that involved extensive mention of the ITV regions. The fact that each region had the same number of points to allocate meant that the likes of Border and Channel would become Britain's top rock powerbrokers, because there were far fewer voters, and I always wondered if record companies shipped a load of people off to Carlisle or St Helier that night to constantly phone in and try and massage the results. Brekkie post_id=12230 time=1620850375 user_id=976 Wrote:I guess they were done Sunday evening till Monday evening to have both London franchises involved. ITV used to do a lot of things across Sundays and Mondays, in the eighties they would often run mini-series across the two nights so LWT and Thames could both show them, and even up to the noughties you would quite often get two-part dramas on a Sunday and Monday so they could benefit both LWT and Carlton. There were always attempts to ensure both London franchises had stuff of equal quality, if you look at when all the Bond films premiered they pretty much always alternated between weekdays and weekends for that reason (and whichever one didn't have the premiere would usually have the first repeat). Of course, the final Telethon was entirely on LWT time as it ran from Saturday to Sunday. Colm post_id=12278 time=1620880156 user_id=975 Wrote:I'm certain I read, or heard, somewhere down the years, that ITV Telethon '92 was pushed back from the last weekend in May, as it was anticipated it'd fall during a General Election campaign (assuming Parliament ran for a complete five-year term since the 1987 election) - a pre-emptive move which backfired when the General Election happened in April instead. That's not a bad theory, actually, the previous two elections had been in the June and most of the regions probably would have been a bit stretched if the campaign was going on at the time. Though of course if it had been in May as usual, presumably it would have been on the Bank Holiday Monday and hence on Thames. I was going to say, they could have done it on the August Bank Holiday, though that wouldn't have been a Bank Holiday in Scotland and Northern Ireland. (Wonder where they got that idea from.) I assume different numbers were displayed in different regions in order for this to work, again not unlike said show the idea came from - and, again, how did Channel manage to cover up Meridian's numbers?Just to answer this question and not to take the topic too off course. That's not to say they didn't hire in a frame sync for the Telethons of course ? ITV Telethon - James Martin - 14-05-2021 Although if there was a sat truck sent for the purpose of sending material to LWT I guess it's not unrealistic to suggest there might have been a return path by which the feed from LWT came back to Jersey, so that they didn't have to work with the TVS version? I'm not sure how much it cost to book a satellite transponder for 24 hours use back in the late 80s/early 90s? I wouldn't have imagined it would have been cost effective for an audience of just 100k? Looking at those videos, this seems so obvious. But I can't believe they went to that length. Surely all regions would've had some sort of green screen set-up or could've knocked up a simple backdrop to actually present from their own studios. The programme would have to pay for the studio in each region to be manned, plus any other staffing and other costs incurred by each region. Doing it the way they did is a lot easier to do, less likely to go wrong, looks consistent and makes for a slicker programme. I can't see why they'd want to do it any other way (mind you I can't see why they did it at all) Presumably the presenters involved enjoyed a nice trip to London and mingling with the pop stars too ITV Telethon - Andrew - 15-05-2021 Steve Williams post_id=12295 time=1620893208 user_id=1326 Wrote:Yes, I remember on A Song For Europe twenty years ago, when on a couple of occasions they revealed the votes by area, and then mobile and online voting was all put together in one lump. I can see why they stopped that as it was quite hard to keep track of, also due to the big numbers involved, nobody, either the regional presenter or Denise actually ever read the scores out, so going to each region became a bit pointless. Regarding Border or Channel holding all the cards, I’m not sure it really mattered as everyone just voted for Westlife every year anyway! I also wasn’t aware that Kate Silverton used to work for Tyne Tees ITV Telethon - James Martin - 15-05-2021 Yeah a couple of years they used the actual numbers, and then others they used points. Wasn't Jonathan King behind it originally? He'd been on the BBC Eurovision team for several years, certainly he was on 1997's winning delegation - so I'm guessing the ESC style of voting was partly his idea. Incidentally, the international spokespersons on Melodifestivalen in Sweden are all flown to Stockholm by SVT - I assume for the same reasons. This year it was all done on Zoom and on at least two occasions the links fell over. |
