Playing it every day before switching to World News - seems a bit overkill. But the suggestion did come from an MP for a party that wants the flag to be set dressing for every ministerial office.
It would also beg the question if Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales should play the national anthem, or a national song instead. I am sure Andrew Rosindell would be against the nation's identity being used, and would insist on "God Save the Queen". And this comes at a time where Tory MPs are trying to push a vote on abolishing the License Fee, with the BBC in their crosshairs.

Probably something to spin-off in another thread but I'm guessing with the influence the BBC set up had over television internationally we weren't the only country to play the national anthem at the end of the day. Do any (democratic) countries still do it?

I guess there is an argument that Radio 4 plays it before handing over to the World Service, which kind of negates the argument that BBC One doesn't close down now.
If we had a more relevant anthem, rather a tedious dirge with dodgy lyrics about one entity that many people choose not to believe in "saving" the head of another entity many would wish to see abolished, I might be able to get behind it. I'm surprised that line about crushing rebellious Scots hasn't invoked cancel culture yet.

I am proud to be British - I love my country - but I don't need to be reminded of it by the anthem playing before simulcasting with the news channel at night. I always thought it was slightly strange to play the anthem anyway - what purpose did it serve?
Isn't part of being British being slightly awkward about being overtly patriotic outside of major sporting events?
On artistic merits alone, I would prefer the Radio 4 UK theme to be brought back before the anthem on BBC1, if anything has to be brought back at all.

As others have said, yes, RATS refers to Radio Automated Transmission Systems (known also as Royal About to Snuff). It's a key part of the OBIT procedure and is designed as a mechanism for preparing stations to announce the news of a major story (usually a category one death) or to opt in to a sustaining feed for the announcement (cf. local radio stations opting to FiveLive).
I should clarify, I wasn't being unpatriotic ([mention]Moz[/mention]) but rather just that it feels a little awkward to play a national anthem every day for no apparent reason, certainly now we no longer have closedowns on network. I would much rather prefer it was used for significant events and meant something, without the need for GBeebies style jingoism.
