BBC licence fee to be abolished in 2027 and funding frozen - JetixFann450 - 16-01-2022

I think it isn't more so the loss of the license fee, since anyone would willingly pay for the BBC if it knew people were going to enjoy it's content.

I think it's more about the stretching of demographics and indeed the sacrifices the BBC will have to endure for audiences to continue watching their services for how many years they do. For example, BBC are already in the midst of launching BBC Three again, but if, say, the BBC stopped getting funding, they'd have to sacrifice that again. It'll be 2014-2016 all over again and I doubt the BBC want that situation again, knowing full well this is why the BBC is in this situation in the first place.

By all means, I do support the BBC, but with the current waning reputation the broadcaster has, plus many of it's viewers simply not funding it out of the grief that they are not reporting on "what they want to hear", the BBC need to find a viable alternative to fund it's services and programming and the argument of the license fees isn't new, especially since it was argued when the BBC entered the digital era and viewers complained about BBC Choice, a new digital channel that barely had viewers at that point because not many people were digital or who were digital never used the purposes of Choice as a catch up service.

I was not surprised by this news that has come out today. There has been whispers over the last two or so years in the press it was going to happen. Social media is seemingly flooded with politics, but I think ultimately, whoever was in power at this time, you cannot get away from the fact that the TV license system is totally outdated and would not be sustainable in the long term. People do not agree with paying for a TV license just for having a TV. It doesn't make sense in 2022 and certainly won't by January 2028!

Granted, there would always be someone who would pay it, but I suspect these numbers would continue to decline over the next few decades until the BBC was a on its last legs. It is therefore right that a new funding system is created. As someone who works at the place, I am not overly concerned. I don't think there is much doubt that the BBC can survive via "commercial" means. Will it be the same BBC as it is now? no probably not. But that doesn't mean it is going to become something bad. I am sure there will be many cuts, and it won't be pretty, and some of us might not make it, some things which mean a lot to those that need them will be closed, but in the end, the BBC will still be there, overall still doing what it does best.

I am more curious what is going to happen to BBC News, I think it is very possible it will be forced to show adverts, possibly merge the two channels, or maybe be separated and continue to receive some kind of funding. Not forgetting the non-UK channels which receive funding from elsewhere, will they carry on as they are? BBC News is a strong brand but I am not sure sufficient numbers of people would pay monthly for it unlike the BBC entertainment etc side. If the outcome is that it all stays as one and is funded from a monthly sub, News may well have to downsize although I am not sure how much money it takes compared to the rest of the departments. But overall, I think the BBC is going to be ok. All just my personal opinion of course.

We will not know if the licence fee is to be abolished until after the next General Election in 2024.

People are getting extremely carried away here, it’s like the facts don’t matter.

This honestly.

The next two years are effectively a freeze which already puts the BBC under strain, inevitably services will get cut further and programme budgets reduced.

The future of the licence fee depends on who gets elected in the next two years so there's a lot of time to consider at this point

I can’t imagine many listeners of Radio 1 (and to a even greater extent 1 extra)would be interested in listening to a station that is meant to target all age groups and a much wider range of music- not in the age of streaming.

It doesn't feel like the Royal Charter protects the BBC's independence in the way that it should - not only should it be editorially independent it really shouldn't have to rely on the government of the day being sympathetic to secure it's funding. Does this even have to be debated through Parliament?

I won't get into the issue of what should and shouldn't be cut as we all have personal preferences on that and it is easy to dismiss services that offer little value to yourself but overall it feels like it's no longer about making efficiency savings - noteable cuts will be required to meet the new budget. It really isn't good news for licence payers with multiple sports rights due for renewal in the next couple of years, including the Olympics and Premier League Highlights.

It would only be a delay of the inevitable, sooner or later someone is going to have to implement a new model of funding for the BBC. What has actually been said about the future?

Quote:"It is not yet clear whether the future will be share ownership or subscription, but there will be no more licence fee renewals as long as Boris is PM."

I am not sure what "share ownership" means! But certainly nothing is locked into place at the moment, but it has to be tackled at some stage.

Indeed.

Abolishing the licence fee is a major policy decision, and as far as I’m aware, it was not in the Government’s 2019 manifesto.

The current Government (and, indeed, the current DCMS SoS) can say whatever they wish, but ultimately it’s up to whoever is elected in 2024 to make the decision.

As I said previously, I expect the abolition of the licence fee to be a Conservative Party manifesto pledge in 2024 - although even this depends on who actually leads them into this election.

Labour will probably pledge to retain the licence fee or propose an alternative in their manifesto.

So ultimately, the electorate will be making this decision on the BBC’s future at the next election, and it certainly is not a done deal.

You cannot be suggesting that the BBC scrap a radio station that was established specifically for reaching and serving the Black community, which has been on air for almost twenty years?

I would much rather the BBC merge Radio 1, 1Xtra and Asian Network into a single service reaching its specific audiences together or 1Xtra and Asian Network merging together as they share similar audiences and genres of music.

Edit: If Steve’s post was sarcasm, apologies.
The only things radio 1 1xtra and Asian network shere is target age group and newsbeat the type of music on all 3 is very different

Yeah let’s merge Radio 4 with 1Xtra while we’re at it, given that’s another 2 services with some obvious overlap of content.

Or, get rid of 1Xtra and go back to how the BBC used to be - make all Radio stations universal for everyone. why would you want a radio station that only appeals to 18-34 year olds when you would rather have 14 - 80 year olds listening?
1xtra reaches an audience which other parts of bbc struggle to reach. Axing it would be a big mistake and there should be stations aimed at young people.its what makes stations like r1 1x An and bbc3 unique

Nadine Dorries hits BBC with £2bn funding cut as licence fee is frozen
EXCLUSIVE: Tense negotiations between the Government and BBC over the cost of the licence fee have concluded, with Nadine Dorries deciding to freeze the cost at £159 for the next two years.

I see it mentions that 19-34 year olds don't watch the BBC... well why is BBC Three coming back then?

This is the problem. Creating services for demographics is in my opinion a very divisive thing to do. The BBC has to be inclusive across its services and if the majority of its services are not suitable for certain demographics then surely it should be looking at how it can achieve that. In the UK, each and every service should be able to be suitable for every person. Regardless of ethnicity or background or age or culture. Yes, have dedicated slots for religion, black music and so on, that has always been the case, but to go further in my opinion goes against what the BBC is. Of course British people are a diverse bunch, and all the better for it, but at the end of the day we are all British and therefore whatever is offered on any broadcast service paid for by each and every one of us, should be appropriate for each and every one of us. If there is demand for a non stop black music station, someone can fund it and launch it.

Of course you will argue that I can listen to 1Extra if I choose, which of course I can, but that isn't the point. The question should be why aren't these demographic groups listening to mainstream BBC? What is the BBC doing wrong to exclude these folk from wanting to use the services already provided? Radio 1 for instance has become ageist and shouldn't exclude older artists from their playlists just because its producers feel younger people wouldn't want to hear them. Again, you'll argue "But you can use Radio 2" which of course I can, and do. The fact is though, I used to enjoy listening to Radio 1. However since I'm no longer catered for on Radio 1 I have found myself using commercial local radio instead more because I find it more universally listener friendly. That's the point.

The BBC waste money trying to appease demographic groups that sometimes it comes across as patronising, whereas other services offered elsewhere seem to have nailed exactly how to appeal to everyone without bringing colour, age or anything else into the equation.

BBC3 is another example. Do young people want BBC3? Do they actually watch the content or are they finding things to watch that better suit on Amazon or Netflix?

EDIT: Apologies if I have quoted the wrong post!
Radio 1 isn't ageist most of its djs are older than the target audience

Does the Asian network even play much music. I’ve never listened to it but I thought it was mostly speech based .

It is mostly music. Its drivetime show has some speech content and it takes newsbeat. But apart from that its music based

AxiosBrit67 post_id=63465 time= user_id=1688 Wrote:Assuming that the cuts goes ahead at the time licence fee scrapped and replace with new model they will need to close, sold or merge some services that overlap the content or deemed unprofitable. For example, CBeebies needs to merge again with CBBC channel or Radio 1 spinoffs must merge with main Radio 1 into one station, on the other side, unprofitable service like Bitesize needs to close or sold out.

Time has changed for the BBC as it feels very different to those decades ago.
I would hate to see the reaction from parents if cbeebies was axed
