As I alluded to above, there was a major change of direction in 1995 where lots of programmes were asked to restyle themselves going forward (presumably because they were seen as stale and boring), and the two high profile causalities of this were Krypton Factor (with what it went out with in that new format) and Bullseye, which simply went out of production. The cynical could say it was new management wanting to stamp authority and get rid of programmes that had been on the air since 1977 and 1981 respectively, but they were both highly successful.
Of course it could be argued Krypton Factor went down that route to try and get rid of it and the changes (whatever they were) to Bullseye may have had the same effect, although it probably be argued shifting it out of its traditional Sunday night slot to Saturdays and later Fridays did more damage than anything else.
The good thing that came out of it failing was Gordon Burns becoming BBC North West Tonight's anchorman for most of my childhood. And that was good.

The problem with TOTP is most of the people clamouring for it to return aren't particularly interested in modern music and the charts, so wouldn't watch it, and the people who are interested in modern music wouldn't be interested in watching such a show, so there's no audience. No to mention the charts are pretty irrelevent these days even if you are interested in current music, they've struggled badly to incorporate streaming, and there's so many almost arbitrary rules when it comes to things like old songs, declining songs, an artist having multiple tracks etc. they don't really reflect what people are listening to anyway.
You can't revive and sustain something on nostalgia alone, there still has to be an audience.

A lot of this goes on.
People (c.f. morons) calling for the return of a particular programme just because they like the memory of watching the old version back in the day, but would have little or no interest in watching any revival.
People like the *idea* of something coming back, with no thought of whether bothering to tune-in would fit into their busy life schedule.
And there'll be the inevitable bemoaning whatever has been changed for the new version, like they expected it to be hosted by the reanimated corpse of the long-dead original host and to still be giving away VCRs and fondue sets as prizes in this day and age.
If you wouldn't even watch re-runs of the actual original itself (on e.g. Challenge, Gold, etc) for fear of shattering your rose-tinted false memory of how good it was, then don't go calling for a revival that you also wouldn't actually sodding well watch!

I wouldn't watch TOTP if it was brought back even though I welcome its return, but that's not the point. I'm not into current chart music but lots of people are.
The problem with the old TOTP was that it became so irrelevant in the end. Moving it to Sundays to coincide with the chart was pointless because still there were songs (announced as "NEW") that weren't on sale and hadn't charted. The music people were buying wasn't being reflected.
Artists who charted albeit in the lower end of the Top 40 could have provided a freshness to the show but were ignored in favour of repeat performances. Maybe that was how it was "back in the old days" but in 2006 it didn't wash. TOTP should have changed much sooner as indeed the world had changed.

I would say that this is true of The Crystal Maze reboot. There was nothing wrong with the reboot per se, it was perfectly fine and acceptable, but the demand to bring back you could argue was somewhat exaggerated. Granted, Channel 4’s scheduling didn’t help things, but it was there and it was promoted, so it could be found. But people didn’t watch it, whether it was too much of out their schedule to watch it or that it wasn’t how they remembered I don’t know. But I think The Crystal Maze is a good example of a show which really should have been left to rest.
I think if ever say The Bill was rebooted, I think a lot of people wouldn’t watch it, or say, this isn’t how I remembered it or the likes and would fall off air after a year or two anyway.
I get why people want old shows to come back where they feel that it ended too soon or that a particular story related to that show wasn’t tied up, basically wanting closure. But long running shows that ended… they ended for a reason and it’s time to move on. Or at least enjoy those shows again for what they were without a potential tarnish to their legacy.

RE Top of the Pops, if it were to return on a weekly basis it would get a bit boring very quickly as the charts these days seem consist of the same three artists with three or four songs in the top 10.

Speaking of The Bill, seeing as the Drama repeats have just reached that point, that's another show that had a bad... well, relaunch rather than reboot, but all the same. The show was gone within the year.
Someone I talked to on Twitter a few years back who claimed to work on the show said the relaunch was forced on them by ITV, and they didn't want to do it. Though whether they actually did work for the show and that was the case, I can't say, there's so many bullshitters online, but plenty of disasterous decisions have been forced on TV shows and films from above against their will over the years.

You can successfully reinvent a show if enough time has passed. Poldark and All Creatures Great and Small come to mind although those don't count as they are new adaptations of books rather than remakes.

The Bill revamp was all about ITV deciding not to bother with pre-9pm dramas (outside soaps). And I suppose they felt for a 9pm slot, it needed to be a bit less soapy. Also the above comment about ITV ‘forcing the revamp’- of course they did. Production companies don’t make decisions about any shows. They’re just the client of the broadcaster. ITV was paying for The Bill, so if they wanted to set it in space with a drum ‘n’ bass soundtrack, then Thames would have to oblige.

It surprises me but also doesn't surprise me that production companies are at the whim of the broadcasters in terms of decisions although I wonder who makes the decisions in terms of changing a producer of a show like what happened with Brian True-May who had to step down from Midsomer Murders back in 2011 because of comments he made in an interview.

What always gets airbrushed out of discussions like that is that shows that are riding high at the top of the ratings don’t generally have a relaunch forced upon them
Obviously those who liked the previous version and didn’t like the new version would say that, as they were one of the people still watching, but if many others weren’t, maybe it was thought something must be done
Of course has a relaunch of a long running show ever actually worked, or just made the decline quicker, as nobody new switches on, and many current viewers switch off

It's not a relaunch as such but I always find it interesting that some dramas can survive a cast change but others can't. Death in Paradise got a new lease of life when Ben Miller decided to leave and they got Kris Marshall as the new detective and it's become their thing that a new detective comes to Saint Marie every couple of years whereas New Tricks slowly lost viewers as the original cast left and were replaced and was eventually the BBC decided not to renew it in 2015 but I believe the higher ups weren't all that keen on it so once ratings dropped, they had a reason to get rid of it.

Technically the same program as it still mostly a news program but dropping the news from the name and making it a bit lighter and coming from a sofa instead made it the least watched breakfast show to winning the ratings at breakfast eventually seeing first the big breakfast and then GMTV so I would say it was a very successful relaunch. But it does seem to be an exception though as nothing else really works and the fact I struggling to think of anything that relaunched and actually doubled its ratings sort of proves that.

Wasn't even the first time Channel 5 tried to revive it - It appeared as One to Win back in 2000. Lasted a year (and two hosts) before it got axed.
