I’m pretty sure there wasn’t and there hasn’t been one since right up until Sunday.

The Sunday Times today have a quote from RTÉ, blaming the lack of daytime news on Covid:

Quote:“We have managed to protect RTE News output on TV, radio and digital during the entire pandemic until now,” the station said on Friday evening. “But unfortunately, the latest wave had an impact on our teams, as across Ireland.

“Like every organisation in Ireland, RTE is trying to manage a high level of staff absence because of Covid. We took the decision to take some daytime bulletins off air during the Christmas period to protect the evening news. We have extended the Christmas schedule until today [Friday]. We expect to return to our normal schedule next week, when news2day for children will also return.”

It also says they're going down to showing three episodes of Fair City a week, but are still filming four.

Tonight's edition of Claire Byrne Live on RTÉ One had no titles in this episode. Instead the programme had played out A Woman's Heart which included pictures of all of the vigils that took place for Aisling Murphy during the weekend. It's a beautiful tribute to Aisling's legacy.

There hasn't been much discussion on Irish news here, much because there hasn't been much going on really. But some news out of RTÉ today with Jon Williams annoucing his departure. Will be interesting to see who will come next - and if they can breathe some new energy into the organisation. Between the skeleton service that is the RTÉ News Channel, the poor quality radio visualisation of programmes from the newsroom studios (Morning Ireland, News At One, This Week)...there is some space to build on Jon's work over the past few years.
