I don't think any public company would want to be seen as actively avoiding all-female shortlists, especially when that shortlist came from a fully open process.

I guess it is just like any job application process - sometimes you just can't find the right person for the job first time around.

Now it would appear that Adam Fleming had also now applied for the Political Editor role:

Somehwat embarrassing for Sophy Ridge it has to be said, to apply as Sky’s flagship politics presenter, get to the final stages, and then have the role re-advertised because the bosses weren’t happy enough with the the quality of the applicants.

However, it’s also deeply unprofessional of those involved in the process to brief the papers, and it’s baffling as to why you’d proceed with a relatively small shortlist when you know you aren’t satisfied with the quality of the applicants.

It is a little unfortunate also that the role now seems likely to go to a middle-aged man in todays climate.

Never really thought much of Sophie or Anushka to be honest but like you say surprised they pursued the shortlisting with so few good candidates. And on the middle aged white man thing. BBC needs to do more at grass roots level to hire minority broadcasters absolutely. There are loads of people from minorities such as Amol Rajan and Mishal Husain who could do the job but who have clearly ruled themselves out or not applied. BBC can’t make them or a woman apply for it. It’s a pretty high profile role and Deborah Turness won’t want to get it wrong, even if it does mean it goes to a middle aged white man.

They could appoint an interim I presume, saving that up the salary until you get someone

I have a feeling it’s Pippa Crerar who they really want, but her lack of broadcasting experience lets her down. She fits the bill of someone who’d get them exclusive stories, and she’s cropped up a few times on Sunday Morning and Marr over the last few months. I suspect we’ll see an interim appointment with Pippa quietly appointed in the background and given more exposure to the tv side of things. Just a gut feeling though.

She’s also presented The Week in Westminster on Radio 4.

Jo Coburn was absolutely electric on Sunday Morning, she comprehensively questioned the CEO of E.ON on what more energy companies could do for people, and interrogated the Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi on partygate to the point he looked he was going to spontaneously combust! Usually he projects a very calm and considered demeanor. Slightly gotcha-esque, but very impressive.

Jo Coburn is very underrated.

She is, a very good interviewer wasted moderating a pointless discussion show.

Normally a big fan but I was getting very annoyed at her asking Zahawi a question and then immediately interrupting his answer.

Jo Coburn set the morning alight! She was outstanding with her pressing of Zahawi and crippled him as a guest. Happy to see it's gone viral. She is most certainly in my book 'Hard as Nails'.

She’s probably a good shout for taking over from Andrew Neil during an election.

No offence intended to Sophie Raworth but this morning the show just felt different and more authoritative with Jo Coburn presenting - usually we only see her on Politics Live (apart from her annual trip to Studio E for the local elections) so it was interesting to see Jo in the Sunday Morning format this morning

If Kuenssburg ever needs a stand-in for the show one week after she takes over in September, I'd deffo love to see Jo back
