I'm not saying the whole channel is fabricated and it may be full of genuine gems that are actually from some video tapes out of an attic somewhere and that channel got around a lot back inn the day but... I suppose we can be thankful they haven't hacked 15 minutes of "oh God my ears!" music into it and presented the resulting fabrication as a genuine off-air recording.
It is a little odd. I can't quite make out what's going on with it. Very ong clips of very bad quality random VHS clips with no descriptions it's a tough watch.

It's not just the constant in screen graphics but they seem to stutter and skip too, in a way that an analogue format doesn't. It's either deliberate, with accompanying on screen graphic, or it's a terrible capture

Ed Hearn is/was a veteran of the tape swapping circuit in the 1990s and early internet communities, hence the dodgy quality of some of these clips.  I think all of us active at that point ended up getting a 9th generation dub of one of his compilations at some point so it's quite nostalgic to see them put online in much their original form, with no filtering for the online video sharing era!

It's a shame it appears to be the 9th generation ones that are getting uploaded!

I agree it's nice to put them online in their entirety, but maybe a bit of work to trim the chaff off and a few words of description. Even VHS tapes usually had a brief description on them of their contents

RE: YouTube Gold - James2001 - 18-07-2022

Being several generations down I guess could explain the multiple fonts on some videos- different captions from different VCRs from a different generation.

This one has the final show from Southern television. Around 1:25:00 is the infamous rambling speech and "Portakabin TV" song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrXLP7bxqe8

They'd already broadcast these earlier in the day as part of Day by Yesterday. Pretty unproffessional for them to have broadcast it once, let alone twice.

As has been said, frustrating there's no proper listings or cataloguing of what's in each video, as there's some gems in there, but there's hours and hours to wade through.

BBC2's 20th anniversary programme - 20 Years Ago Today... from 1984.

An unexpected find: An LWT continuity slide from 1968! Maybe there are still bits to be surfaced during this inaugural era?

Also from the same Youtube channel, “Sale of the Half Century” is on tonight in Angl-er, the Benny Hill Show. Kind of a foreshadowing with the flag!

Very unusual to see pre-school programmes like Balamory, Tweenies etc being introduced under the CBBC banner on BBC Prime. Did they not pick up the CBeebies branding till later?

RE: YouTube Gold - Neil Jones - 22-07-2022

Pretty sure I read somewhere it took years for the CBeebies brand to expand beyond the initial TV channel, somewhere around the time they started launching international versions of CBeebies, 2007?

CBeebies did eventually appear on Prime though, in 2006:

RE: YouTube Gold - Brekkie - 23-07-2022

Not surprising really they left it a while to expand internationally. The CBBC brand didn't need much explanation in relation to being the BBC childrens strand but I guess CBeebies kind of needed to make a name for itself in it's own right - I'm guessing the "beeb" reference would be lost on many international viewers.

RE: YouTube Gold - BBCMeridian - 23-07-2022

I don't know if anyone has posted this yet but I've come across a clip of Channel 7 startup in Melbourne in 1984 and if you look very closely towards the end of the video you'll see a well known ITV children's programme that aired from 1972 to 1992.

RE: YouTube Gold - Neil Jones - 23-07-2022

So Rainbow was sold abroad and seen on Seven in Australia. Considering it had been on air for 12 years by that point in the UK, it was ripe for international sales. So what else is new?

Mind you that sort of self-promotional shtick did make its way to the UK - when Bruce Gyngell came along to save TV-am, they ended up using something in the same sort of style as that video from Seven, Gyngell himself being from Australia and cutting his teeth at Nine.

And there was this which I presume was pre-recorded, but if not the announcer gets serious kudos for 55 seconds of faultless spiel of the channel lists:

Cor, that's quite something to turn up. Some interesting points: 23m is where they go into proper obit mode (the script hasn't changed a lot over the years, has it?), followed by purple Astons which I guess was also part of the obit template, as I'm not sure I remember it from the World package of the time. Nick Higham, from 'another of our studios' looks a bit like he was the first reporter who could be dragged out of bed and into TVC, and the obit package voiced by Martyn Lewis suggests he might not have left the building between the late newsflashes and the early bulletins the next morning (Obviously it would be mostly in the can but these things are generally given one last polish before they go live). The YT comments point out that Nik Gowing changes studios while the obit is playing - indeed there's a bit of a jump on an otherwise stable recording, which may well be a non-sync cut as network changed sources?

Sorry to bump this - but to answer your question, Martyn did infact go home, as he discusses on ITV's Newsflash documentary.  He was called in late at night, did the two flashes, and then was told to "Get (his) head down, and come back in at 6am."

Of course he was woken up fairly early to be told she was dead and to get back in.

I remember watching CBBC Prime during a family holiday to Turkey back in 2005, a few months before the bugs were replaced by the gumdrop logo.

They aired shows that hadn't been seen on either the main CBBC or CBeebies strands in years like Monty the Dog and El Nombre and according to Michael Underwood, it was very popular over there!
