Just to clarify, are you saying that rights have been awarded today, for a competition that starts tomorrow?! Sorry to ask - football isn't my thing but last-minute deals (*cough* Sanzaar *cough) are very much a topic of interest. The third round qualifying matches are not include in the Champions League TV rights. Only matches from the play-off stage onwards. As the post above noted the centralised tv rights doesn’t start till the play off round on 17th August (for the Europa League it’s even later, the group stage). This award is quite late but what was left at this point (in the Champions League) was one FTA package of non exclusive games that two other broadcasters (BT Sport and LiveScore) already have rights for. The Europa League package was for all games, but again duplicates rights already sold to BT Sport.Rdd post_id=32320 time= user_id=1409 Wrote:A very late completion to the Irish UEFA club competition tender process as VMTV secure rights to the remaining package of FTA Champions League rights on Wednesday plus the UEFA Europa League and Conference League. (Would love to know what’s happening with The Rugby Championship by the way, with each passing day that there’s no news possibly meaning another last minute deal with RugbyPass, owned by the NZRU’s friends at Sky NZ). You, me, and many other rugby fans! It would be an absolute crying shame if this can't find a home on a UK sports channel. It doesn't need much (any) UK presentation, match timings tend to be quite convenient filler, and I suspect has a lot more mainstream UK support than some other foreign leagues. Have BT renewed their deal now? The Sport Thread - BcastCornwall - 03-08-2021 ITV's first Community Shield is on Saturday Evening. The Sport Thread - Rdd - 03-08-2021 I was never entirely sure why the original Europa League theme was ditched. That said the one they have now easily trumps the “clapping” theme that came in between the two. Seems that we are seeing a lot less of the Qualifying Rounds of the UEFA competitions on TV this season than usual, although Premier Sports have picked up some of the Scottish ones. The Sport Thread - Brekkie - 04-08-2021 Think the introduction of the Conference League has pretty much taken any English qualification out of the equation. Similarly when they guaranteed the 4th place in the PL a place in the Champions League that may have guaranteed 4 Premier League teams in the group stages but took out any English interest in the final qualification games. As for the Community Shield - is that the first time (in modern times anyway) that it's been on a Saturday - isn't it usually a Sunday? The Sport Thread - Amber Avenger - 04-08-2021 It's expected that the Rugby League World Cup that was scheduled for the end of this year will be formally postponed today after Australia and New Zealand have said they won't travel over in the current state of Covid https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/aug/03/world-cup-postponement-puts-season-extension-and-england-tests-on-agenda If it keeps to the same time of year, there will actually be a clash with the FIFA world cup, with the RL final I think being on the first proper weekend of the FIFA tournament. Have BT renewed their deal now? No announcement on who has the rights to that yet, it starts next week (and Bundesliga 2 started a couple of weeks ago!). No news of Serie A yet either, which starts a week later. The rumour mill suggests both might have new, different homes, but we'll see. Yes, I think it was on a Saturday in the distant past though, in the pre-Premier League era. And here's where I smugly slide in and point out it was on Saturday last year - https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000m7x3 It is indeed the case that in previous years it has usually been on a Sunday, yes, though it has shuffled around on that day quite a bit. In 2012 it was played around lunchtime to avoid a clash with the business end of the final day of the Olympics, and indeed it has clashed with the Olympics on a couple of occasions. This is my favourite, an absolutely demented day of sport with the highlights as part of Olympic Grandstand - https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/service_bbc_one_london/1992-08-08 - and on BBC Radio it was introduced by Terry Wogan, as he was doing the afternoon shift of the Olympics on Radio 5. If they want a 5.15 kick-off, a Saturday is the better bet if fans are going to be present, hence the scheduling this year presumably. This is one of the rare occasions the Charity/Community Shield has been on FTA TV, as it happens. Up until the mid-eighties it was highlights only, then ITV showed it live in 1986 and 1987. It was back to highlights in 1988 and then BSB started showing it when they started, and then Sky Sports. In 2008 it was on Setanta, but when they went bust the following year it was on Sky again - that was a very last minute deal, it was only signed with about a fortnight or so to go, that and the Women's Cup Final were the only FA competitions Sky had the rights to at the time. ITV had it from 2011 to 2013 and then it was live on BT, so as far as I know this is only the sixth time it's been live on free TV. The Sport Thread - RhysJR - 04-08-2021 Is there any the reason the Community Shield has moved to Saturday? Sunday looks far less busy sports wise, with no 1500 kick-off in football in England and the Olympics will be finishing (1600 would miss the Closing Ceremony) and it would not clash with the South Africa v. Lions rugby. The Sport Thread - RhysJR - 04-08-2021 Some minor rights updates: Celtic in the Europa League tomorrow will be on BBC Scotland: https://twitter.com/BBCSportScot/status/1422606876651491338 And Aberdeen in the Conference League will be on Premier Sports: https://twitter.com/PremierSportsTV/status/1422860979482906624 And after the absolute mess of the Ligue 1 domestic rights over the last year, Amazon Prime France have announced their own air team, including former Sky Sports (and BBC Sport) pundit and current Belgium coach Thierry Henry: https://twitter.com/Jon_LeGossip/status/1422936793125724171 They will launch a new channel on Prime costing 12.99 EUR a month on top of the standard subscription, something Prime UK have not done yet for their in-house sports content as of yet: https://amazon-presse.fr/Nos-communiqu-s/Nos-communiqu-s/Communiqu-/amazon/fr/2021-07-13/ And not strictly TV, but Talksport have angered Tottenham Hotspur and issued a belated apology for a caller expressing anti-semitics beliefs unchallenged last night. Interesting to read in Talksports' statement that their YouTube stream is broadcast live (where the comments were broadcasted) and the radio stream has a few moment delay (where the comments were removed before broadcast). https://twitter.com/FootyAccums/status/1422908474493702151 https://twitter.com/talkSPORT/status/1422913661274935296 https://twitter.com/SpursOfficial/status/1422909257549221896 The Sport Thread - japitts - 04-08-2021 A couple of "24/48 hours notice" wins by the looks there - there's hope for Bledisloe/Rugby Championship being on Sky or BT yet.... |
