ITV News - Brekkie - 02-01-2022
People are just moving on, and the higher profile departures from ITV News in recent months have mainly been people who've been around 30 odd years and done their time. Some have simply just reached the point of retirement, others may have reevaluated their career over the last couple of years as many of us - and frankly considering the news cycle is a bit of a chore to watch in recent years some are probably just as sick of reporting on it too.

I’ve never liked the conversational presentation style Tom Bradby brought to News At Ten when he started, and last night it made me miss their huge scoop which could bring the PM down.
If they had started like any other news programme with a statement - something like “New email seen by ITV News shows that 100 people were invited to boozy party at Downing St at height of lockdown” - I might not have turned over.
As it was Tom Bradby’s screwed up face started with a question for me. One which I didn’t hang around to answer.
My loss in this example, but is it a loss for ITV News too?

I'd say his conversational style is far less noticeable now and in this case I think they reflect the tone of the viewers rather than influence it. It hits many people personally and I suspect that is true of the newsrooms too when you consider what stories they may have been reporting that day.

Well it made me turn over without knowing what the story was. I only realised it was what he’d been talking about when I watched Newsnight.

The sad thing is that the reverse is also true. Most people don't remember the stories they watched on the news, mainly because the conventional style of news writing is so unnatural to our way of conversing, that what is said doesn't stay in the memory for very long.

Watched it back, while I feel the context of reminding the viewer of the first lockdown is important, Tom did take a very long time to get to the point of the story. Meanwhile Mary on the evening news simply went straight in:

I suppose it's important (to them) to be a bit different on NaT; some like it, others don't - I think it's a format that can work (and often does), but Bradby just tends to be very slow at getting to the point, particularly on the first story (I personally prefer Julie and Rageh over Tom for that reason).

I wholeheartedly agree with you. And it's not really a conversational style because it's one sided.

Have to agree. I don't have strong opinions on many newsreaders, but his presenting style is one I've never been able to get on board with. Starting with a rhetorical question both undermines the purpose of a headline sequence (to grab attention) and is just generally bad journalistic writing (it is redundant and wastes time). Though, I'm not sure the broader issue is the conversational style as much as the fact he isn't a particularly smooth reader of the autocue, giving a rather stilted delivery. His tendencies to pull inappropriate facial expressions and sound a bit sneery do not help.

I think News at Ten has in recent years kind of moved away from trying to rival the 10 and instead stray more to the analytical style you'd see on Newsnight, but finding itself somewhat positioned between the two, perhaps as much to its detriment as it is to its advantage.

The current News at Ten closing theme is the best in current use. It builds nicely to the end.
