Are those actual cardboard cut-outs in the audience risers?

Euro 2020 (+1) - BcastCornwall - 19-06-2021

Loving the Lineker, Ferdinand, Klinsmann and Richards combo on the BBC Games in the last couple of days. The debate too VERY BT Sport in style which really gives the programme flow. Finding Souness, Neville and co on ITV staid and lacking conversation with each other, which is so stuttering in comparison.

Euro 2020 (+1) - JT95 - 19-06-2021

Thought I’d post this after every team had played 2 so we’ve had time to assess, but for me this is who wins in certain battles between BBC and ITV... (Personal opinion and taste of course!)
Best intro? BBC
Best intro theme? BBC
Best studio? ITV
Best hosts? BBC
Best commentators? ITV (Purely for Clive and Ally!)
Best pundits? BBC
Best on screen graphics? BBC, but that’s almost a given with ITV using world feed for the scoreboard!

Overall: BBC 5-2 ITV.

Let me know what you guys think too Smile

While I agree that you can easily figure out it’s not Australia, it’s rather annoying I find, they also use SPA and SWI for Spain and Switzerland when it should be ESP and SUI, yet they use NED for Netherlands rather than ‘NET’. Small thing to notice but some consistency would be appreciated

To bring this back up, ITV are using SPA on their scoreboard tonight, despite using (a version of) the world feed graphics.

ITV have also got a ITV SPORT logo in the corner during live matches but the tournament logo (like the world feed) during the highlight shows. A little inconsistent for some reason

But why is that a bad thing?

Personally I prefer it, as it gives the tournament a distinctive look, rather than just the run of the mill all year round graphics being recoloured

There was a time the BBC used to replace all the in-match graphics with their own, but that seems to have stopped now, so besides the score graphic, its all identical to ITV

No I completely agree with it giving the tournament its own branded look, I guess I was looking forward to which creative direction ITV would go this time based off their creative designs for 2014, 2016 and 2018. However I still would give the BBC the win for graphics as I still don’t like ITV’s own graphics for the team sheets and halftime/full time score displays

Only at World Cups though, UEFA would have been unlikely to ever allow it, and up until the last World Cup, when the practice stopped, it was probably a good thing because the official FIFA graphics were quite bland. Of course it would usually be the BBC premiering their next graphics changes but in gold, which made it special. That was before all graphics adopted that colouring. Of course in 1998 it was the other way round and the BBC took the host broadcaster graphics (in French) and ITV had a clean feed with their own match graphics.

I assume in ITV’s case it was just a clean feed in 1998. But when the BBC did it, the graphics must have been linked to the official host broadcasters, because they’d appear on screen at the same time with the same sponsors.

Have to agree - there is a real fresh feeling with the BBC pundit teams this year and it is all quite watchable, whilst ITV is all a bit dull really, both with the studio teams and especially with Lee Dixon as their main co-commentator. Although a shame Clive didn't get his swansong I don't think Sam Matterface does a bad job in the main role, but he needs someone alongside him that can liven things up if needs be.

Neville is usually brilliant on Sky but never been a fan of Souness, though he did well in the Scotland pundit role on Friday. In addition never been a huge fan of Ian Wright, especially as it seems whatever channel you watch football on he seems to be there, but he was spot on in his post-match analysis on Friday night.

Mark Pougatch is such a reliable anchor for ITV but it's lost the fun their coverage had when Chiles was in charge.

Euro 2020 (+1) - Andrew - 20-06-2021

Personally I’m enjoying both sets of coverage, they both being different things to the table, and it’s one of the benefits of the two channels sharing the coverage on equal footing, you get a variety of different pundits and opinions. You couldn’t really fault ITV’s coverage of the England Scotland match on Friday, except maybe the ongoing controversy of using Sam Matterface over Clive Tydesley

Strangely there is only one set of matches today and they are the 5pm kick offs, so for the first time since the tournament started, there is no prime time game. It does mean that ITV can catch up on some Corrie and BBC One can run Antiques Roadshow uninterrupted

Anyone know why the BBC have chosen to run the secondary matches next week on BBC Two rather than BBC Four as in previous years?

Euro 2020 (+1) - JT95 - 20-06-2021

Bit late positing so excuse my lateness! But ITV committed one of my pet peeves on Friday and used 3 voices in the commentary box. It feels overcrowded, and during the match felt like Sam Matterface and Ally McCoist were having their own chat while Lee Dixon would occasionally butt in and say “yeah I thought that too” or “yeah I did that once”. And certainly I don’t think we need two extra sideline pundits popping in, when there’s already 3 people commentating for us.

Euro 2020 (+1) - Brekkie - 20-06-2021

You've got to have three people really for an England v Scotland game. Would have been terrible not to bring Ally McCoist into the Matterface/Dixon duo.

I would agree with all of this, both however have had a great tournament. Best pundits just BBC for me because of strength in depth whereas you seen with ITV the other day Scott Brown & Rob Earnshaw whereas a BBC 'B' Team if you would call it that is Chappers, Micah Richards & Alex Scott. ITV have a very strong pundit lineup with Keane, Neville, Vieira, Wright although Dixon is missed for me in the studio. Pougatch is a great host but you have 3/4 experienced hosts on the BBC with Lineker, Chapman, Logan & Barbour. Also BBC have the voices your used in week in week out on MOTD.

The problem I have with ITV is it is not Clive & Ally as Number 1 and not to be harsh on someone but what is the point of Peter Walton, all he seems to do is say I agree with the referee decision.

he’s there in case there is a big controversial refereeing decision, which we haven’t really had yet

A penalty awarded in the knockout stages which ends up winning the match, based on a decision that is dubious either way. It’s good they have a referee on hand.

And regarding having 3 commentators, this was clearly for both the England and Scotland view, the BBC did the same for their highlights

Euro 2020 (+1) - Brekkie - 20-06-2021

Picking apart JT95's original post I think as always the themes and titles grow on you as the tournament progresses, though for me ITV has the edge on the theme and I think the stings into the breaks are really nice, and show how you can have effective branding in just a 5 second clip.

For me though the BBC win out on the studio. ITV's is nice but the presenters just get lost in it - the shot on the return from the game for example where they spin around from the video feed of the stadium to the main studio and stick to the wide shot, despite the main presenter being basically the size of a stamp.

The BBC also had a nicer set up at Wembley - was it the same space as ITV then used?

Fair enough but even so don't think Walton adds anything, will see as the tournament progresses into the knockout stages. No problem with 3 comms either as with England v Wales & Wales v Northern Ireland in the last Euros as it gives a viewpoint from each side, just think ITV would have been better with Clive, Ally & Neville.

Speaking of commentary the BBC feature on Patrik Schick's Goal against Scotland showed the commentary from all other countries and even Gary Lineker made the point the commentary wasn't exciting and problem was Rob MacLean who is obviously a Scotland fan.
