Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - DeMarkay - 29-08-2021 One thing I don’t get about the show is the cutscenes with random people? Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - Cassia Tuna - 29-08-2021 Worth noting that the original series was initially broadcast on the now defunct BBC Choice, which is probably why it didn't receive much attention first time around. Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - James2001 - 29-08-2021 Considering when it was shown, I'm assuming it was one of those shows which was commissioned for BBC Three, but then got thrown out on Choice when the change to Three got delayed. The original concept in the radio series (originally Sean Lock's 15 Minutes of Misery) was that Sean was spying on his neighbours with bugs. They dropped that for the 30 minute radio series and TV show, but kept the little sketches of tower block life. But there’s something very noticeable with Episode 6 is that it has a laughter track and where as the rest of the episodes from the first series don’t. Was this the case first time round or on DVD? You'll note this has been changed now and episode 6 is now available without laughter. Long story, involving some incorrect labelling in the archive, but it's all sorted now. Thanks for sorting that out Steve, by all means I didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the episode itself, it just seemed unusual to the rest. I will certainly go back and have a look at Episode 6 again. Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - James2001 - 01-09-2021 In my opinion it was actually quite interesting to have that version up there. Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - Cassia Tuna - 01-09-2021 So does this mean that there's a version of the series with the laughter track? Why not have the option for both? Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - James2001 - 01-09-2021 Maybe it's only that one episode, if it was a pilot? I'm sure someone can enlighten us. Thank you, but I played the most minor role in the whole thing, and all the thanks should go to several people across iPlayer who both got the whole series made available - in absolutely record time - and then got the episode changed pretty sharpish (on a Bank Holiday weekend!) after it came to people's attention. I quite liked the tweet someone sent where they said they quite liked it with the laughter as it felt like a parallel universe where it was on primetime BBC1. As has been suggested on this page, it does indeed seem to be the case that episode 6 was the original pilot, re-edited for the series by which point it was presumably decided not to have audience laughter on it. I don’t think that’s true I’m afraid. A friend who worked at YTV in Leeds where it was recorded tried to get audience tickets for me for the third series, but couldn’t get them as there was no audience. Thinking about it, would it not be impossible to remove the audience noise completely, assuming they’re in the same studio? The sound would surely still be audible in the background on the other mics. Plus in a comedy, there’d be times the actors pause for a laugh, which would look odd if you couldn’t hear the laugh. I presume in the case of the 15 Storeys High episode in question the audience track was recorded separately if they could remove it. Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - Brekkie - 01-09-2021 M*A*S*H famously was produced with and without a laugh track. Producers wanted it without and internationally it generally aired without but US channel execs wouldn't take the risk of it airing that way, so early series aired with a laughter track. Not so much now but I imagine previously for some new comedies execs wanted to see them with and without to see what worked best. Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - IanJRedman - 01-09-2021 Obviously it's not a reliable source, but Wikipedia says the show was not filmed with a live audience. This might just be somebody's assumption, though, as there's no laugh track on the finished show. To be fair, I did say I'd heard it might have been screened for an audience- not made in front of one. Comedian Sean Lock has died aged 58. - wonkey_monkey - 01-09-2021 It's a shame the picture quality on 15 Storeys High is a bit poor. I suppose the low-quality look might be considered part of its aesthetic, but it was in that awkward pre-HD, post-film period and only got the most basic of "film-look" conversions, which means a lot of this (from the DVD): ![]() Although it can actually be corrected pretty well because one of the fields is clean (the other is a blurred and shifted copy) and can be interpolated with something more advanced: ![]() The iPlayer version exacerbates this a bit, being a downscale from 576 lines to 540 lines, which blends the fields even further. |
