New BBC Logo - Cassia Tuna - 04-07-2021 I read somewhere also that the BBC has to pay to use the Gill Sans font, whereas they can use Reith free of charge? If so I'm guessing that is also a factor in their decision making here? I still haven't got over the 1997 logo change yet

The BBC had begun moving away from it as early as 2001 anyway.lobster post_id=25772 time= user_id=890 Wrote:I genuinely believe the reason for them expunging Gill Sans has nothing to do with licensing or mobile aesthetics and readability, it is the unfortunate and uncomfortable reality of having a master brand derived from the work of a molester and paedophile (Eric Gill). This is a really good point, but the new Reith typeface, which appears on the new BBC logo was started to be introduced in 2017-2018, by that point the Gill Sans typeface had been in use for 20 years, if they really wanted to expunge Gill Sans because of that, then why it took 20 years? Surely they could have done it earlier. Also by the time the BBC adopted Gill Sans back in 1997, the acts of bestiality committed by Eric Gill were already known and discovered....and that is why makes it even more bewildering to me As for the connections - couldn't they just rename the font if that was their primary concern? New BBC Logo - Roger Darthwell - 04-07-2021 Brekkie post_id=25821 time= user_id=976 Wrote:They could have simply used this font https://www.monotype.com/fonts/gill-sans-nova and maybe ask if instead of using the name Gill Sans Nova, they could have named this Reith, or even possibly the Ryan Sans font (Ryan is the surname of George Ryan, which is the guy who created this new font). BTW I respectfully disagree with the logo being overdue a change, this logo was created to be iconic and timeless as I earlier said, if it ain't broke don't fix itRoger Darthwell post_id=25788 time= user_id=1160 Wrote:Yes, after 24 years it's overdue a change anyway and I doubt there are many fonts in use in broadcasting back in 1997 that still are today in the same way. The mere fact that the BBC reacted by saying this, instead of denying that they are changing the logo tells everything you need to know....they are indeed replacing the logo New BBC Logo - chris - 05-07-2021 Roger Darthwell post_id=25825 time= user_id=1160 Wrote:chris post_id=25823 time= user_id=1265 Wrote:I was going to criticise this thread for being full of conjecture but then when the press do it too....''The BBC said: “We are using our own font — which we own the intellectual rights to — when we update content or BBC products. New BBC Logo - chris - 05-07-2021 I mean it’s all been said here. It’s a poor design and a retrograde step. But then what should we expect from a BBC with such a poor record on presentation in the last decade? New BBC Logo - Inspector Sands - 05-07-2021 If they're just swapping the font then it's not too bad, but in the way it's used in for BBC Select etc it looks awful - the sizing and the spacing just looks wrong. In a lot of uses the BBC letters will be too small to see on screen I hope that's just a temporary solution for those channels to have a non-Reith logo while they finalise the actual new one New BBC Logo - Rick - 05-07-2021 In the article it says that viewers will start to see it on screen in the autumn... New BBC ONE look on Strictly launch night anyone? I do wish that the logo had better letter sizing and spacing, in the current form it does look quite off compared to the 1997 version. I hope they tweak it before it makes it on air. I do hope its introduction brings massive changes to the BBC as a whole, their TV presentation is so higgledy-piggledy and could do with major synchronisation between not only the TV channels but their online offerings also. I look forward to seeing what they are planning, and knowing there are major changes coming, I do feel quite excited. A change is as good as a rest! New BBC Logo - johnnyboy - 05-07-2021 TVenthusiasm post_id=25808 time= user_id=1055 Wrote:I really don't like the revised logo AT ALL - the current logo (although outdated) still looks great, even after 27 years. They really should use the mock logo instead of this logo. Exactly. Things come in and out of being vogue all the time. I am in a place where I used to think the BBC logo was the greatest logo creation of all time for its elegance, simplicity, and British style. I currently don't think that but if they refreshed the logo parts (+"ONE", +"TWO", etc), that might help - perhaps back to the more confident and uniform 1997 approach. And the BBC Reith font, the more I see it, the more I dislike it for being a cheaper, slightly narrow Verdana-type font. On the point of Eric Gill, he was a monster of a man and he is rightly condemned for it. But, as another poster said, does that mean that all of his work should be scrapped? New BBC Logo - brioalex - 05-07-2021 Even if we all don’t exactly approve of the new blocks, knowing that a change is coming is quite exciting when most of the BBC branding has stayed the same for 20 years! But, as another poster said, does that mean that all of his work should be scrapped? There appears to be a precedent of yes - the back catalogues of Glitter, Savile, Harris etc don't get shown. That said, good luck with getting rid of the Gill sculptures at BH which will be covered by the listing. |
