I think the ITV News set-up looks just as good as it did when it launched 8 years ago. I do agree however that it would be nice if the virtual set design could vary a bit more between the different bulletins, whilst still keeping the same style (that goes for the opening titles too, as only News at Ten has different ones).

Err, that's why. The use of a virtual set for as long as ITV has used it, just feels so dated now.
Whilst the sets look realistic, they don't look real, and they never have done. You could argue, quite legitimately, that in 1999, the BBC's virtual set still looked fresh, but they went back to a physical set.
As good as virtual sets have become, they still don't look quite real, and I don't think they ever will. I feel like the point where the increase in processing power, RAM etc. required to make a genuine real looking virtual set, won't happen for a long time and the amount of improvement that can be obtained that way now is minimal. Hence why I see a return to physical sets.

I just don’t believe that’s true. Visitors to 200 Grays Inn Road are generally shocked when they see that the ITV News studio is just a green room with a desk.

I see your point, though, and as technology improves, so will the realism of virtual sets. Though I think ITV's is very impressive, and I reckon that a large proportion of viewers think it's real.
In general, I think ITV News' on-air look/sound is still fresh, despite fast approaching a decade old!

It would cost ITV too much to reinstate physical sets plus it wouldn't allow flexibility.
I do think we'll probably see the technology currently used by The Mandalorian in news setting within a decade.

Oh, I don't doubt that's true, but I think that has more to do with people believing everything they see on TV and read in the papers, rather than the visual quality of the computer generated backdrop.

As I said earlier in the thread, I don't think ITV News's current branding can be faulted as such. It's a very classy and solid piece of design and looks a great deal better than BBC News with its real sets.
But as a pres enthusiast, I'm yearning for something new from them to get excited about. ITN always does this kind of thing well and it's a shame they haven't changed much of the branding in a long time. I think we need to draw a distinction between the branding being solid and good enough for most people but also the pres fan in us wanting more. Otherwise our little hobby becomes a bit boring.

I absolutely do not think ITV looks anywhere near as real and polished as any BBC News bulletin, particularly when you've output from BBC Wales coming on-line. Scotland is a disaster - that's a given, but ITV Network News is a lazy load of rubbish. It's outdated, it flickers, it's hard keyed sometimes, looks totally fake and it's TIRED.
How many more specials or elections do we need to see the additional dipped keyboard Ikea add-on wheeled and attached on. Yes, I've being very critical. There is enough space in that building to re-home ITV NEWS. They make more use of that Atrium during elections, which I am fully aware isn't possible year round due to the canteen housing the ground floor. Just look at C4 News. They've got a wonderful studio overlooking the atrium even if you can barely see it. ITV got the rough end of the deal when they were buried in the basement.
It's about time to rise from the ashes!

I thought it was a shame when ITN got rid of Studio 3 alongside the atrium. In its later years it played host to ITV London News, although they didn't make use of the atrium as a background due to the corporate set design. Although it was absolutely tiny, it's where ITN News bulletins came from in the 1990s with that fantastic atrium/newsroom background. OK, it wasn't large enough for all the walking about they wanted to do in the early 2000s, but it would have been perfect for present day ITV News that barely moves from behind the desk. And they would still have had the basement studios if they needed a larger space for one-offs.

I know budgets are tight and an overall relaunch is unlikely, but would be nice to see a few backdrop tweaks. Nothing too drastic though.
Perhaps Tom Bradby could ask his mate Prince William to contribute with some funding for a set makeover.........

At swords with both my buddies. I can't bare the music either. Look, at the end of the day I am a Deborah Turness kind of gal, and I want my ITN back!
I want a totally separate identity to regional news but with with option to dip into the regions as it has proved to work.
Just bloody bring back ITN over ITV news, that's it. Oh, and a new studio in the atrium.

The current ITV News look has lasted 8 years because it has stood the test of time, and because for once the ITV logo itself has stood the test of time. I agree with itsrobert we're probably due a refresh soon - and if it wasn't for Covid it may have happened this year, but ITV are just following the industry in not refreshing as often as they once did, especially now they've not only got the national set to consider. I do think the next refresh will be more of an evolution with the regions retaining the same set.
However there is a huge difference between a refresh being welcome and a set being a "lazy load of rubbish", "outdated", "totally fake" and "TIRED". None of that is true in the slightest.
