Holby City to end - Joe - 02-06-2021

I don't watch the show*, though I did watch Casualty for a good number of years.

I guess there are two sides to this: (1) you watch the show and naturally will be really disappointed – if you aren't, why watch the show? (2) The reasoning of using the money to make different shows makes sense, especially if those shows will be set/made elsewhere.

I must admit, I was pretty surprised to see the news today. Holby City has just always been there in the schedules for much of my life. In fact, I was a little surprised it's only been 23 years, so well established does it seem. *I've seen a few episodes! Though the shows are related, I do think it's quite different to Casualty – different characters, different setting (in reality even if not on paper, it does feel distinct!), different timeslot (weekday evening is very different to Saturday night), different style.

I wonder if Casualty will be axed as well? Shame about Holby City

Holby City to end - Brekkie - 02-06-2021

Quite surprised by this - always thought it would outlive Casualty and if it is a production location issue usually the BBC have no issue in relocating a show. Didn't think it rated that badly either.

Have to wonder if it is more about cost cutting than "creating opportunities" and whether it's a sacrifice that had to be made for the return of BBC3..

I can't see how it can be about raising money to fund a channel or anything like that – they can't just plug the gap with the testcard.

River City is unlikely to replace Holby simply because it’ll confusing for anyone to start a show that has been running only in Scotland.

I wonder if they’ll go for a family type show rather than a medical or police based show

I assumed this was to make room (and budget) for the two new regional "soap style" dramas they announced a few months back. One is slated to be made in the north of England, and the other in one of the nations.

No, but when BBC3 closed a good chunk of their budget was diverted to BBC1 drama. Think Flux has nailed it though, although if there is one thing the North is served well by surely it is the soaps.

Yes, expect “Yorkshire General”, a hospital drama set in a fictional town in Yorkshire to be announced within the year!

"A hospital drama set in a fictional town in Yorkshire" sounds familiar somewhere Wink Big Grin

Or, to be more precise

Of course Yorkshire isn't and has not been been underserved by TV production compared to other areas. There has been no lack of programming, drama or soap in the area. Hopefully the BBC won't just take that easy option of Leeds or Manchester.

This is so sad hearing about Holby City coming to an end Sad wishing all the cast and crew the best of luck for the future!

Surprised to hear it. Not my cup of tea but obviously very popular. For me the most amazing thing is the fact that the BBC are prepared to end what has been a "banker" for many years. It's plausible to assume that after the Eldorado debacle the BBC made Casualty more "soapy" and that was followed by Holby City. As I said not a personal favourite but many will certainly miss it

I think it's probably quite safe short term:
-It's now the only hospital based continuing drama
-It's made in a nation (Wales), not South East England
-Whilst BBC1 scheduling matters less these days, it offers something different on a Saturday night compared to the rest of the schedule, and can easily play in both the 2000 and 2100 hours

One of the few programmes I watch religiously every week so this has come as a bit of a shock.

I’ve never really got into Casualty and found Holby much more appealing.

It’s a bit of a surprise they keep Casualty and axe this - I suppose it’s because it’s more of an iconic programme, but I’m not sure how it does in the ratings in comparison.
