Years ago it used to be celebrity anything only ever appeared around Christmas time and that was it. Now they're all over the schedule.

It may well be that daytime TV ends up being the last bastion of civilian episodes of gameshows as it were.

I suppose there's stuff like The Wheel and Rolling In It, but zelebs are shoehorned into them!

The new Family Fortunes reversed that trend going from All Star to civilian. Even the recent Christmas Special was a civilian episode.

Interesting, although not sure how they intend to make an hour-long show out of it. Even the 10 mins of FFF on Millionaire Hotseat in AUS feels repetitive and far too long (it was only added when they made the show a full hour to go up against The Chase Aus) so it'll need much more of a format built around it to stand up as its own show. A version of Millionaire Hotseat would have been a better bet but probably too similar (and a better format) to Gary Linker's new show.

Didn't they commission a 50:50 spin-off years ago that never made it to air?

It did in Italy though.

Catching up with Beat the Chasers- I swear in Series 1, the chasers used to sometimes offer the full 60 seconds on their clock as the top offer, but I don't recall that happening again since. Maybe that's possibly due to the 6 chaser format now?

Personally I prefer it with 5- they could just rotate one out each show.

The Game Show Thread - XIII - 13-01-2022

I am surprised Sony hasn't pitched Jeopardy! to say BBC Two or Channel 5, it'd be something that would be good as a 6.30pm show.

The celeb version is certainly more generous on time. In the 6-chaser format if you take on 6 Chasers you get no time advantage- so effectively as the contestant answers first the Chasers get the head start.

The problem with Jeopardy is it's a pretty dull format really. I guess it kinds of cuts through in the US as it's one of very few shows where a bit of intelligence is required but a bit like Countdown here it's the legacy that keeps it going. As a "new" format not only is it pretty dry but it's central premise of the answers being questions is just rather annoying too.

The Game Show Thread - Jon - 13-01-2022

If we want a relatively quick fire way to do a quiz we tend to come up with better formats of our own, whether the formats be simple like the Weakest Link, Mastermind, 15 to 1 or 100% or slightly more complex such as The Chase. Jeopardy’s convoluted way of giving questions to answers that aren’t really questions wouldn’t really work here. It’s telling of the all the iconic classic US gameshows, Jeopardy is the only one which hasn’t really done as well as the others internationally. But of course in America it’s an institution because it’s always been there, it would be quite different to introduce it to a new audience.

I’d also argue that big money is also not really needed on a quiz like that, as that’s only really useful when you’re trying to create tension or when the player(s) is playing against the game rather than other contestants.

While I'd love to see a native version, we've tried 3 times already and none of them were particularly successful - especially compared to current daytime series (even some daytime series of the time) and the US version.

For anyone interested, the results of the Bother's Bar poll of 2021 which celebrates the best and worst of gameshows are revealed tomorrow night at 9pm, live on YouTube.

Certainly think the series has been much better than initial Christmas Day 2020 broadcast pilot. And it’s a good watch.

I do think I’d rather see a rebooted Generation Game with Bradders though. He’s one of the few performers who could carry it off, but I guess the Mel & Sue version is too recent. Also perhaps the thing he does with Holly is too similar to that format.

The Game Show Thread - Brekkie - 18-01-2022

Has that thing he did with Holly (I can't remember the name either) been recommissioned?
