BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Stanley Matravers - 30-10-2021

Graphics in the bottom-left on Final Score promoting various forthcoming sports coverage across the BBC, are *still* using the old "one" logo to signify BBC One. ?

I didn't see anything promoted for BBC Two (or any other channels or outlets) but if there had been, I'm sure that outdated logos would've probably also been used.

Auntie's chronic inability to manage to achieve branding consistency is infuriating.

I have absolutely zero expectation that the likes of regional news programmes' longstanding tendency to use outdated and/or mocked logos on knocked-together slides will ever ever end for the whole of the rest of eternity, regardless of any supposed corporation-wide rebrands that come along now or in the future.

They said this would be a gradual rollout

And what "they" view as a "gradual rollout" comes across on screen as an inconsistent poorly planned rebrand.

Just because it's a gradual rollout doesn't mean it's good. They could at least use the right logos for services that have new ones.

If this was posted in the Gallery, everyone would be all over it.

Any critique on here gets spat back with “It’s a gradual rollout” or “the general public won’t notice/care”… It doesn’t make it look any less messy.

I know, I'm just trying to say that they'll probably rectify the issue soon.

hopefully

Last week's Sportscene Results in Scotland was even more inconsitent with the promos. The BBC Scotland Channel used the new logo (with BBC blocks baove the word Scotland) whilst BBC One Scotland had the old logo (without BBC blocks as it has always been shown in these graphics).

And I think that's why, if this was two people speaking - the conversation would just end.

One person says one thing, and the other responds at a completely different level, not taking in what's been said. That's why you've used the word 'spat back', because there isn't any understanding to be had on either side.

To be honest, there's not much more to say, either. Most (like the post above) are constructing it as a rebrand and then judging by that standard. Time and time again, it's been mentioned that that's not the right descriptor.

A 'messy' logo would be one skewed, stretched, discoloured. Messy is not: they've used a logo that they've said they will continue to use together for a period, but I don't agree that they should.

Let's be honest, this forum would only be happy if BBC One launched with the same logo that each particular user was fond of as a child. Anything else would get ripped apart anyway.

I'm not saying there isn't debate to be had about the merits of such an approach, but we're not really elucidating on that at all other than short posts saying it's messy or sloppy, or, my favourite...(considering it's been worked on by a internationally renowned agency) 'amateur'.

There wasn't much discussion of the design, or the motion, or the use of typography either.

In fact, how do you get out of here? I want my coat.

I think there’s a gradual rollout of the Reith BBC logo + Chameleon, not the logos that have already been rebranded.

Aka ‘please only talk about the positive elements that I want to discuss…’

I actually agree that there are some really strong elements to this - the new BBC logo itself looks good, the animations are lovely, and it’s great to see the BBC recognising it needs to update its look.

However, I think you can still recognise that from a branding perspective, the current situation is inexcusable. By having two logos for everything floating round, it firstly looks pretty strange, secondly, it’s taking some of the BBC’s most recognisable brands like iPlayer and confusing the situation entirely, and thirdly, by having the old logos around until the end of time, it’s a constant reminder of the cost, with silly tabloid stories a continued distraction.

The silly ‘phased rollout’ idea really is an own goal for the BBC - in 6 months time the papers can still run stories on how the rebrand cost ‘millions’, yet they are ‘STILL’ using the old logos.

Had they have changed everything TV and digital based in one go (aka everything the average person sees), they could have batted off criticism over the cost, explaining it’s a corporation-wide rebrand across a wide range of platforms. With this approach, everyone gets used to the new logos and quickly forgets about the silly stories on cost. With this ‘gradual’ approach, by contrast, the criticism never really goes away until the changes are finally complete.

Baffling.

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Steve in Pudsey - 31-10-2021

I think there is a tendancy to judge this rebrand/refresh/whatever you want to call it by the standards of the big bang undertaken in 1997.

Granted there were fewer services then, but swapping out the blocks on logos of services and programmes that aren't quite ready for the full relaunch doesn't seem that unreasonable an expectation, in the context that it happened in 97.

We shouldn't be seeing both logos on screen together. An interim ECP design that would work without using the logo for programmes/services with the Gill logo shouldn't have been that difficult.

Quite.

Things like physical signage and other elements that the viewer/user doesn’t see are less important, but if you’re launching a rebrand, then rebrand.

All of the TV channels and digital platforms should have been updated in one go. To not do so leaves situations like iPlayer - using the old logo on the platform, but the new logo on trailers, promos etc. I understand the new iPlayer technology may not be ready yet, but at least change the logos for consistency (ITV Hub did much the same in 2019, updating it with the new logo, with the design being updated later).

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - orange - 31-10-2021

Exactly that - and that’s where my main gripe with the rebrand lies. I couldn’t really give a toss about there being delays about changing physical elements because it’s understandable how that would have to be a gradual change - however - while I understand the size and the quantity of services the BBC provides, it’s all mostly digital. There shouldn’t really be an excuse for not changing everything all at once in that medium in 2021. It’s bizarre. Just wait for it to be all ready to go and prepare everyone for it properly…

It should’ve been really quite straight forward for them and I don’t understand the efficiency of doing any of this - all it’s doing is causing internal confusion.

I really enjoy some elements of the rebrand and it’s not something I’m just pecking at for the sake of it - and I find it really annoying that I can’t even use the word messy on here to describe a messy rebrand without that being deconstructed either - by someone clearly just looking into something in my post to grasp at inanely. Implying most of the forum are people that are constantly calling for them to bring back the balloons or are never satisfied unless it fills that nostalgia hole is a load of crap too - most people just want it to look decent. These are all things that everywhere else catering for design discussion are going to point to as well when they see it actually being rolled out, it’s not TVL being pedantic for no reason.

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - SteveRW - 31-10-2021

Reading some of the posts regarding the different forms of branding has given me reason to put down my thoughts after 11 days of on air changes to the BBC TV channels.

My thoughts are now that the date to rebrand seems to be a date for the sake of it. Clearly significant elements of it were not ready and having two different presentation styles on screen - the iPlayer logo in the CBeebies ad, the old BBC blocks, the old BBC Sounds presentation following shows such as The Hit List etc - is a bizarre choice for the executives to make. The BBC One blips and trails do not compliment the current idents and this also looks disjointed and rushed.

Hindsight is a much used word and in my view it should have been postponed until the New Year or Spring. This would have given the technical departments longer to align all logos and presentation with the new look and allow BBC One to re-launch with its new set of idents that match its trail components. When you claim that TV Channels will look very much different on screen but in reality not much looks different, at least not in the sense that the changes are hugely noticeable, then it certainly does beggar the question "so what have they spent the money on then?" Sometimes the BBC's worst enemy is the BBC itself, because it has muddled or conflicted thinking and perhaps too many tiers of management contradicting each other.

We are though, where we are. The positives do outweigh the negatives and the changes made to BBC Ones trails are welcome because they look fresh and modern. I like how the trails end, thanks to the animating BBC logo, and lead into the idents. The idents are improved by the new logo but somehow they don't seem to cry fresh and modern in the way BBC2's do which is improved in all ways.

So, I believe waiting until January or March if necessary, would have been much better. We would have had a fuller, more rounded refresh across the board, including BBC One idents that match the trails.

It's not just the BBC in 1997. ITV did it all pretty seemlessly in one day in 2013, and back in 2006 too (though the ITV4 logo did debut early). When C4 changed the logos of their other channels back in 2018 all evidence of the old logos vanished pretty quickly from our screens. C5 have rolled out new logos multiple times across their portfolio and news in a single day. Yes, it's all on a smaller scale to the BBC (although in terms of the customer facing TV channels, it arguably isn't!) but if the commercial sector can get it right so often there is no excuse for the BBC not too. And all these replies about it being a gradual phased project are just that - excuses. If I didn't know better I'd say branding consultants are milking an extra six months work out of the BBC by staggering things unnecessarily.
