It's happened before with Strictly, The Wheel and Blankety Blank but I suppose they're not exactly game heavy, and if it's not for long then it's not too bad whereas with ITV it was gameshows all the way back to before autumn. There's a lack of variety there - if they had Saturday Night Takeaway or Barrymore type shows to go all year round then it would be better.

It’s actually worse as at least ITV had a mix of celebrity and civilian gameshows, and had The Cube in there meaning they weren’t all quiz based. ITV’s lineup through the Autumn was poor but four back to back question based celebrity gameshows is even worse. I expect it’ll last until I Can See Your Voice returns, although it will be disrupted some weeks for sport and events like the one off musicals special.

I'd prefer to watch the upcoming lineup of BBC shows regardless if they are too samey than any combination of what ITV had for most of last year and I imagine many would do too, largely because of the quality of the shows themselves. They are all solid performers so I can see why the BBC aren't afraid to have them together.

You might prefer them but I’m not sure there’s much in it for the audience. The ratings won’t go as low as ITV’s numbers in the Autumn because they aren’t up against Strictly, but The Wall has consistently been a fairly weak performer and Pointless Celebs is a teatime show on too late and a fair bit less popular than it used to be.
The Wheel does very well although The Weakest Link is still unproven on Saturday nights. It’s just too much with them all together.

Yeah it’s been on for too long now. Although I think it was broadly the same in 2019/20 and 2020/21, the difference being in those years the runs were padded out with repeats and compilations, whereas this year it’s been wall to wall new episodes. And apparently last week was the start of a “new series” so it looks like it’ll be on for a while yet. They should really have switched to something else after Christmas.

Guess it has effectively replaced You've Been Framed as the early evening filler. It's one show I always find watchable - don't think it's as tired as the constant repeats of The Celebrity Chase, though usually earlier in the afternoon. Think they haven't got to the point where they're reusing celebs either.

I feel Catchphrase works better with members of the public, but they haven't done one of those in a few years I don't think.
Shame- I remember Stephen *insisting* it'd all be done with the public when it first came back, but doesn't look like that's the case now.
However, I'd much rather watch Mulhern era Catchphrase, celeb or not, than Curry or Weir Catchphrase.

I’m sure a few celebrities like Chris Kamara have been on it more than once.
It’s easy to see why they axed the civilian show. It only got around 2.5-3m on a good day and the celebrity one can do at least a million more. They haven’t recorded any of the civilian version in about five years now so they must have given up with it,

This is a trend though, it appears (mostly) that celebrity editions of things rater better than civilian episodes, particularly outside of daytime, so that's what they go off and make. Years ago it used to be celebrity anything only ever appeared around Christmas time and that was it. Now they're all over the schedule.
It may well be that daytime TV ends up being the last bastion of civilian episodes of gameshows as it were.

Pointless is shifted around depending on other shows but perhaps is on too late on this occasion. No way is it ideal but launching something new against The Masked Singer would be madness. That said, I do think that more effort should be made by the BBC on other formats when Strictly isn't on, but they have tried, e.g. All Together Now, The Greatest Dancer, Let It Shine, Don't Scare The Hare... Covid may have got in the way of developing shows but all these were ambitious one way or another but had limited appeal.
It's difficult to know where to go next and viewers won't stand for, for example, cooking shows Saturday nights but as singing and talent appear to be on the wane then broadcasters may have to bite the bullet and go back to what worked before.

This is true enough, about ten years ago the Beeb ran a series of Celebrity MasterChef on Saturday evenings, which was certainly a bit of a departure from the kind of stuff you got there. But it wasn't successful at all, and it just felt wrong for that slot.

I do wonder if putting Around the World in 80 Days on Saturday would have been better - breaks it up a bit and I think it gets a bit lost on Sundays with it squeezed in at 6.10pm between Countryfile and Attenborough.
I think the trouble in Q1 is the early evening Saturday slot is regularly interrupted by the FA Cup and Six Nations, so game shows are quite handy as something you can drop every 3 weeks or so compared to a talent format or light entertainment style show. It doesn't help either that with replays scrapped you basically have to allow an extra hour for the potential of extra time and penalties too.
