Just watched a report with Victoria Derbyshire interview some from a Dean of a school of governance & politics of a university in Moscow, what an interview he was wittering on and she shut him down and really stood her ground but you couldn’t see in her eyes after how it shock her up abit

I think for us older members who remember the War in Iraq coverage in 2003 (and in some cases the early 90s) as if it was yesterday it's probably worth remembering for our younger members this is likely their first TV War. The annexing of Crimea in 2014 got very little coverage compared to this invasion of Ukraine and other wars in the last few years may have lead a bulletin for a few days but as part of the daily news agenda and soon disappeared down the running order.

It is only natural to be concerned about a persons safety, and only natural to show more concern for someone who is a household name usually seen in the safety of a studio than perhaps a reporter we're used to seeing in dangerous situations or even the millions of civilians affected. However the job they do is to shine a light on the lives of the largely faceless victims of war. It is what they have trained for, it is what they may see as their calling and I suspect for many they see it as their duty. Of course it isn't without risk and they'll be continual assessments of that risk throughout the conflict but ultimately journalism occurs where the story occurs, not at a desk in an office hundreds of miles away.

I take it there won't be an opportunity to extend the BBC News at Six today, because they're running FA Cup coverage from 7pm, so The One Show is already dis-placed over to Two. Tonight's schedule also sees ITV News at Ten not starting till 10:30. But I guess we could see the BBC copy what happened last night, getting rid of the 9:30 filler and extending the later broadcast that way.

19:15 kick off ? They could run the 'Six' to about 18:50, then 20 mins of regional news, and start the Football at 19:10 ?

Matrix post_id=71118 time= user_id=797 Wrote:But more. Clive is an excellent journalist. One need only look at his existing awards to realise he’s gifted at his job. His segment yesterday for Context about how the posting changed very rapidly shows you that this was not, as the poster seems to assume, some star parachuted into a situation when they could be in a warm studio but, rather, a scary and moving story in which an established and authoritative journalist is now based in.

Well, indeed, Clive is a hugely distinguished foreign correspondent in his own right, and has vast experience of this kind of situation. You can also say that about Mark Austin and Matt Frei who are doing the same role for other broadcasters. The fact they also work as presenters is neither here nor there, they are making valuable contributions to the coverage and reporting with the rest of their colleagues. It's absolutely not like Drop The Dead Donkey where someone who's only ever read an autocue is parachuted in.

Clive has been absolutely brilliant throughout the whole thing, that discussion you mention was fascinating. What's also brilliant is that even throughout this he was still tweeting good luck to all the Mastermind contestants and retweeting the charities the celebs of Celeb Mastermind were supporting. What a great man he is. Will be very relieved when he's back home safely though.

What I've also liked is both Clive there, and also Nick Robinson when he was The One Show the other night (which I thought was a great thing to do, bringing the issues to a wider audience to explain them effectively, I know Robinson says he learned loads when he was working on Newsround in the eighties about explaining things in simple terms), is how quick they are to commend ITN, Sky and the other broadcasters. We're so lucky to have so many broadcasters reaching for the very highest standards.

A post has been deleted as it was not related to television presentation discussion.

May I please remind members to keep discussion of this news event to television presentation please. I'm impressed with the general discourse that this thread has had over the last week, and you're all to be commended for it. It would be a shame for that to be spoiled by members posting political opinions that aren't appropriate for here.

Thank you.

She also had no arguments when he asked her about the British-American crimes in Iraq etc. Not that it can be used as an excuse for this but she was shut down as well.

Jayne Secker now on location for Sky News - so a 2nd ‘presenter’ covering this in this field for Sky. She was in Poland on the Ukrainian border focusing on those fleeing Ukraine. Jayne doing an impressive consecutive seven hours on air covering Sky News Breakfast and her own, Sky News Today slot. Albeit with a break at 12 to cover PMQs.

On an administrative point, would it be possible to update the topic title to 'War in Ukraine' which I notice the BBC is now using, and how this conflict has been referred to in parliament? Obviously 'crisis' was appropriate when the topic started but it feels insufficient now.

I appreciate Rob and mods are busy, but hope you might consider this when you have time. Thanks.

Sky News apparently has two "invasion special" hours at 1pm and 7pm every weekday.

I wonder what's even the point of that given that that's how every hour feels like now... Also do they use different intros/openings/elements/whatever in those hours?

An update on John Simpson after there was some brief discussion about why he hadn't been on location the other day:

With apologies for straying into radio territory briefly, I gather the BBC has reintroduced short wave broadcasts of the World Service to get into Ukraine.

War in Ukraine - johnnyboy - 02-03-2022

I meant to post this a few days ago but only just remembered when reading this thread.

ITV had a special 2.5 hour long news programme on Sunday morning and it was frankly a superb piece of TV.

As a Beeb-lover, I often overlook the output of ITV but it made me lament the passing of the old ITV News Channel which got as much viewing in my household as Sky or the BBC.

So far, Sky News are winning the "news war" for me - amazing coverage.

On another well-worn topic, personally, I am against the banning of RT and Sputnik but I was also against the banning of CGTN and PressTV.

British news is, in the main, great but truth is the first causality of war. We all remember the hugely pro-war coverage of the BBC, ITV, and Sky in 2002/3. The drumbeat of war went on for months. With a few exceptions, the entire news industry in the UK was found wanting during that shameful episode.

It's worth remembering that, pro-Putin and pro-Beijing as they might be, RT and CGTN would have, given their general editorial stance, come out against the war claiming there was no WMD. They, just like France 24, would have been right.

We are all big and ugly enough to be able to handle news through different lenses of allegiance and bias and to make our own mind up.

Agreed. I saw it too. As I said elsewhere, good to see ITN getting their 1980s 'Mojo' back
