YouTube Gold - IBM - 11-12-2021 Some BBC Arabic (I think?) presentation from the 90s. I had assumed (probably incorrectly) that the foreign language services were focused on localised delivery of news and information, so was surprised to see a reference to Film '94. https://youtu.be/xxSNI1Nh0sM?t=649 YouTube Gold - Inspector Sands - 12-12-2021 IBM post_id=58025 time= user_id=835 Wrote:Some BBC Arabic (I think?) presentation from the 90s. The current BBC Arabic and BBC Persian TV channels have some factual programming as well as news. Persian even shows Top Gear and dramas like Sherlock: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC_Persian_Television#Schedule YouTube Gold - Steve in Pudsey - 12-12-2021 Al Dupres looks back on the stuff he got away with from the Cardiff pres suite this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuWwJTpHXwk YouTube Gold - Benriggers - 12-12-2021 How in 2001, UK Gold were still using their own 1993 tapes of Doctor Who, and how they got round it.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmaSO1ll6gU YouTube Gold - BBCMeridian - 12-12-2021 After many many years, the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party 2000 has finally been uploaded in full on Youtube, it would also be the last time it aired in that format on BBC One before being renamed the Top of the Pops Awards the following year and the Poll Winners Party being switched to Channel 4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjqTjapxk1s YouTube Gold - nwtv2003 - 13-12-2021 David Frost joins Anne and Nick for a little chat back in 1994, notably discussing TV-am, Channel 4 and what you would want/do with Channel 5. https://youtu.be/Zfg6-DDkkmY YouTube Gold - Neil Jones - 13-12-2021 Ahh, the joys of ghosting on analogue TV. Amazing to think how tolerant an analogue TV signal was, and even with severe ghost like that it's still quite watchable. These days you only have to fart and your picture looks like an explosion in a Lego factory. Notable for Katy Hill, then of Live and Kicking, having to announce SMTV Live being up for best TV show. (sorry not been able to comb through and find it...) The clip is interesting pointing out the use of eight year old tapes in 2001, but I think even only a couple of years ago watching something on Dave/Yesterday/Drama (possibly One Foot In the Grave or Keeping Up Appearances) there was the briefest of flashes of a UK Gold programme title slide heading in to a break with the 1997 style branding. So that was at least twenty years old. Did read on Twitter this the other day. YouTube Gold - James2001 - 15-12-2021 Interesting that some shows get new masters, but some never seem to get updated by the sounds of things. Certainly the EastEnders we're seeing on Drama are new masters, not the old UK Gold ones, as for years UK Gold used to cut out the credits, but they're clearly still using 20+ year old masters for some other shows. They do seem to have replaced all the old 14:9 masters with 16:9 ones, though it did take a few years- the 14:9 copies of the final series of 2point4 Children for example seemed to hang around for ages after they had 16:9 copies of virtually everything else (the exception seems to be The Bill, where they're still using 4:3 copies of pre-2007 episodes (a large chunk of episodes from 2003 are filmised as well)- even though they've purchased new 16:9 masters for episodes into 2001 on UKTV Play, they still seem to be using the old masters for broadcast on Drama- still with the Pearson logo at the end showing they were acquired at least 20 years ago). After the UKTV revamp in 2001 they just started putting fades where the advert breaks are rather than buring in captions. Does mean sometimes you get a spurious fade where they've changed where they place the breaks! But at least they don't have to try and cover up outdated branding. Does seem interesting in that clip that the credit squeeze was recorded onto the tape (and had to be worked around for later repeats) rather than done live.... maybe they didn't have the technology to do it live back in 1992/93? Now it would just be a DVE and stils store fired off by the automation.... or these days even built into the automation. Then it would have been done on a vision mixing desk and as an A-B roll on an edit suite At that time UK Gold came from Thames and then Molinaire in Carnaby Street and my understanding is that it was a fairly basic operation with one TC. Even so I can't think of any other bigger broadcaster that was doing live credit squeezes then. I suppose the bigger question is why they didn't edit their version and then make a copy for TX with the credit squeeze on it? Or maybe they did but the other one got lost/wiped YouTube Gold - Benriggers - 16-12-2021 For anyone interested, first episode of CITV's WOW. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6xqVlUH67Xw |
