So BBC had a graphic on Grandstand which is shown for updates on the football. This is very intresting as I never heard or seen Grandstand ever do something like this.

I guess that didn't last long - just awful. Was bad enough when they had football scores pop up on the rugby in the dying years of Grandstand.

In BBC local radio in the early 2000s digital systems had arrived, but material - goal clips for example - would be archived on to mini disc. Use of tape had pretty much ended by that point, although there were still machines in the studios for archive playback - not live, it would be dubbed in to Radioman. Some pre-recorded programmes were occasionally played from Mini Disc.

Server based digital audio editing and layout had been used at a network level in the BBC since the mid / late 90s (news were amongst the first). MiniDisc was sometimes used on location for recording and editing (some people preferred tape), but in studios it was largely restricted to beds / stings, as a cheaper replacement for cart machines.

BBC Radio Sport did some editing on tape until they (and news) started switched to VCS dira in 2006 / 2007, although alongside tape they would also use Shortcut machines for editing / playing back of clips.

One of the last things edited on tape was 'From Our Own Correspondent' (produced at Bush House, whether it was for Radio 4 or the World Service) which didn't move to digital editing until around 2007.

The sign off is no different than normal, however after a period of the Granada NCR colour test bars and tone, we switch to the blue Independent Television caption apologising for the break in programmes (skip to 12:45), despite closing down. An error at Granada’s end or something not right down the line towards Winter Hill?

To me it looks like the video signal was lost from Granada before the transmitter was turned off so the automatic blue caption kicked in. Maybe it was just the last person leaving Granada's control room turning everything off before they went home?

YouTube Gold - James2001 - 07-04-2021

I have heard of plenty of other occasions where that caption's appeared prior to closedown, presumably when the transmitter wasn't properly prepared for the turning off of the signal from the ITV company.

Worth pointing out that, as it mentions in the description, the rugby was a replay because the intended live match had been cancelled due to a frozen pitch, so it was only there as a filler, so the football would have been more important but of course they didn't have it live, so this seems a bit of a ragged compromise. There's no way they'd have done it during live rugby!

Probably been posted on the blue place, but Trish Bertram has a video showing off a playout suite circa 1993 at LWT, showing behind the scenes with the playout director cueing Trish for her link

If that sounds bad, wait until you hear - I tried uploading a capture of BBC World News from January 25th 2013 (in N8) and their Content ID system flagged one of the scenes...
in the BBC News countdown :?
Have since disputed the claim.

A blast from the past here from almost twenty years ago (wow!) with the BBC reporting on the launch of Windows XP:

Whilst not complete, here’s Granada closing down in the early hours of 24 December 1987. It’s very much similar to the closedown arrangement also online of the Granada closedown a year prior to the night. Further proof Granada really went to town with these things when they put the effort into it.

I remember that picture squeeze being used regularly on Grandstand for football scores around that time (Although I don't know if it was selectively depending on the relative importance of whatever was on air at the time).

I never liked it, it was distracting when you were watching the main action.

A one hour special from a 1987 Bob Ross video complete with blatantly obvious product placement:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT0RNrTDHkI

If nothing else has a better quality rendition of the theme compared to some of the TV shows (though this is available elsewhere anyway, don't believe its library), some interesting background on theory of painting and the equipment which was seen but rarely referred to in the TV show aside from "beating the devil" out of paint brushes.

This and most of the other "instructional" videos Ross did were later knocked out on DVD.
