The timeslot will be between 8:00 and 10:00 pm ET. I may be a bit ignorant about ESC pre-semifinals, but... how do you fit 50 songs in (most of which are 2-4 minutes) into 120 minutes (possibly with ads)?

Hope someone here can explain it.

It's split over three heats, then "semi-finals" and a final, so probably 17 songs in each heat of which I'd guess 10 from each make the semi finals. Will be tight and unusually pacey for such a format in the US - I suspect the three minute limit may be reduced.

Not sure how they're doing the voting or addressing the timezone issue so whether that 2 hours includes results as well, either from that show or the previous show.

Im looking forward to seeing how its done. Im happy that the actual Eurovision producers are involved. Because if NBC did it alone....Im sure it wouldn't be good. BUT....every time a show like this get filtered thru a big US network structure it somehow will lose its sparkle. I dont expect it to be as cheesy and weird as Eurovision, but i hope there are some good songs as a result. Eurovision was created as a way to unite Europe following the war. Well I dont think this is going to do it, but the US has never been as divided than it is now. 6th of January is a good example. Hopefully the goal is to unite the country. If NBC does it big enough, hopefully it has a kind of cultural impact, but i dont think it will. We might see one or 2 series of this sadly before it disappears.

Given how US talent shows usually go suspect it'll be dominated far more by country than pop.

I struggle to see it translating personally - think it may be something laughed at a few years down the line as when America tried to do their own Eurovision. Wouldn't be surprised though if it opens the doors for an American entry into the main event.

I think you are right about the country music. Thats why tv remotes have mute buttons. 8-) Im sure there will be a boatload of that. I doubt they would allow US to join Eurovision. Most Europeans already feel North American (Canadian/US) music dominates music charts already. I dont think that would go over well in Europe. And like the UK, which dominates European english radio...it would pull low votes as well. Sorry James Newman.

The main 'problem' I see is the 'draw' for the elimination phase. How that's handled will dictate it's success or failure. There'll need to be some assurances that all the 'big states' don't appear in one eliminator but by doing so not disadvantage the smaller ones.

A reminder though that the EBU's involvement is now purely advisory having taken soundings they've sold on the 'risk' element to N. American investors.

We'll see.

Has it ousted The Voice from it's slot then as doesn't that usually air Monday nights?

American Song Contest to launch in 2022 - LiamFitz28 - 20-01-2022

Is this airing on a UK channel at all? Or how can we watch it?

Pretty much - NBC announced a while back that they’re scaling The Voice back to just one season per year, so this is the replacement, although I’m not sure it was commissioned as such.

Pushed back by a month due to Covid concerns from the planned February airdate. America’s Got Talent: Extreme is filling the four week gap, didn’t realise that series would be so short.

There are roumours the EBU got the rights in Europe as part of the deal, similar to how NBC got the rights to Eurovision in the US. So maybe BBC Three? Or iPlayer?
