I can't recall such a ridiculous debate, it's actually quite funny.
Whether they specialise in sport, business, sports, economics, religion etc - they are journalists and each will have speciality in one of more fields/ As @Steve pointed out earlier, Frank Bough founding presenter of Breakfast Time was a sports presenter - anchoring the likes of Grandstand for years. His ability to fill an entire afternoon of 'ad lib' was incredible looking back now. Nick Owen over at TV-Am also had a sports background. Naga Munchetty came from a business background, Ben Thompson too.
It's absolute poppycock to suggest someone coming from Sport is less a candidate than someone coming from news.

Of course the presenter whose mention sparked this discussion off had spent a decade presenting Nationwide before Breakfast Time started, in many ways a shorter version of what Breakfast Time was, in addition to his sports presenting, and had started off in regional news.

Frank Bough started on Nationwide when they introduced a Friday evening segment called, I think, Sportswide. From there he migrated towards one of the main presenting team Mon to Friday

Other than Christmas Day, I can’t recall any other occasion when Breakfast has aired with one presenter.
There's been a solo host on various days over Christmas too, but seemingly this was planned as only Nina was billed in the Radio Times, and there were more fillers than usual including Click at 8.45.
It's easy to forget these days when only the big supermarkets are shut that Easter Sunday used to be a very different day on TV and there would be minimal news coverage, and all the political shows would take the week off.

That actually wasn't the case, Sportswide didn't start until later in the seventies, with Jimmy Hill the first presenter. Frank joined in 1972 when the show went five days a week (which is further proof he wasn't doing Sportswide, as until then it wasn't even on Fridays).

I know, it is - a good journalist can turn their hand to any sort of reporting with skills and aplomb.
That said, I am struggling to think of any strong candidates based in the north. There seemed to be quite a few strong female candidates when Louise left, seems less so here.
(I still think Rachel Burden is *excellent* and she’d have been my pick if she wanted to do it of course.)
I know he’s not been at Granada that long but I wonder if it may be of interest to Gamal Fahnbulleh.

Only just seen the new logo implemented in the mock posted in the gallery and see the Breakfast countdown is now has the boxed BBC News logo which just looks terrible. Frustrating as well they've just stripped "BBC BREAKFAST" across the centre of the screen when it would work so well with the BBC boxes top middle as on everything but the news.
Never really understood the red clock on Breakfast either when everything else on the show, except the sofa, is orange.
P.S. Louise was back on the show earlier this week to talk about the menopause.

Nice to see Victoria Derbyshire on Breakfast covering Naga today. I like that they are trialling her for many shows such as Breakfast, News at 1, Weekend News and Newsnight.
