Eir Sport 2 in Ireland is to close down it's broadcast on the 20th of July. A brief press release provided on the Eir Sports website has implied to their subscribers that Eir Sport 1 is unaffected for now. That may indicate to us that the channel might be sold back to Premier Sports Ireland to show all of Eir's archive material in the future.

I know that, at launch, one of the eir Sports cheeks was effectively the same as one of the Premier Sports channels. Can someone remind me which way round it was, and had that arrangement continued to the end?

Ok, to explain that one we need to go back to 2009 prior to Setanta UK’s fall into administration. Setanta had three general channels in the U.K. and Ireland; Setanta 1,2, and Ireland (there was also Setanta Sports News and a dedicated golf channel along with NASN and some football club channels). When Setanta U.K. closed, Setanta 2 and the other channels closed leaving Setanta Ireland and Setanta 1 operating in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
A while after Setanta UK’s closure, Premier Sports (which initially went by “MSK” I recall) came along, initially broadcasting stuff Setanta still had U.K. rights to but were held by the continuing Irish operation. Initially the two were wholly separate, but from around April 2013, Setanta Sports 1 and Premier Sports became a single channel. The arrangement was that the channel was labelled “Setanta Sports 1” on the Irish EPG and “Premier Sports (1)” on the U.K. EPG. It carried Premier Sports branding for all programmes broadcast either in the U.K. and Ireland or the U.K. only, Setanta branding was only seen around programmes broadcast to Ireland only. Slightly confusing. At one point the intention was to officially change the name of the channel in Ireland to Premier Sports, but then Setanta decided to move nearly all their Premier League coverage to it (for reasons to do with Setanta Ireland’s then wider cable availability) and this never occurred.
Setanta sold their Irish operation to eir in 2016, and the channels became eir Sport 1 & 2 but the messy arrangement continued until Premier Sports decided to re-enter the Irish market in their own right. At that point, on 1st August 2019, Premier 1&2 were added to the Irish EPG and eir Sport 2 (the old Setanta 1) became a seperate channel again carrying full eir Sport branding. However it’s mainly been used for overspill/clashes since then and already was mostly repeats.
It’s all really come full circle now. Premier are moving in to fill the gap in the market eir are leaving, acquiring the Premier League 3pms that were Setanta’s centrepiece, the Pro14, and have to be considered major contenders to pick up the Saturday GAA League games. Putting some semblance of what was Setanta Ireland back together, which eir to be honest have been not particularly interested in since they lost the BT connection. Advertising breaks for many many months on the eir channels have been solely consisting of ads for eir. Their squabbles with VM starting with not renewing their carriage deal very early on (losing the prime #105 slot in the process ) really shot themselves in the foot. They did a new deal in 2019 only for that to fall apart in a matter of months.

This seems a bit odd - or as we say now, a bit "GB News". BBC supposed to have exclusive coverage of the U20 Six Nations on the iPlayer but for "technical reasons" the first two games are now on Youtube, with only the Italy v Wales game, which is also on BBC2 Wales, on the iPlayer later.

NBC using Sky Sports coverage of the Royal Ascot instead of ITV's as in previous years* (2019 and before). Not sure what they used in 2020 but it's unsurprising considering the joint ownership.

* Unless Sky are fading to ITV's pictures before each race (not watching Sky Sports Racing so not sure), the ITV runners graphics are scrolling on the bottom of the screen before the race before fading back to Sky. (NBC is also doing the same fades between Sky Sports and their own interviews so that makes me think it's NBC themselves)

World feed graphics used today, incidentally - previously these were reserved to the Men’s and Women’s Senior tournaments with the U20s using normal broadcaster graphics.
Tommy Bowe brought the curtain down on 17 years of Setanta Sports/eir Sport tonight after Benetton Treviso’s win over the Bulls with a “Thank you for watching…if there is anyone still watching” (well, they were up against Germany v Portugal) followed by a montage of their Pro14 coverage over the past few years. As mentioned this isn’t quite the end yet as the channel now goes into a zombie-like existence of repeats punctuated only by the occcsional Professional Fighting League card until it finally closes, which may be sometime in the Autumn.

Rain has interrupted play. I presume the 10pm programme will be canned if this overruns as a result. I would assume play would be curtailed completely if a finish later than 1030 and potentially affecting Newsnight was a possible issue.

I will also wish Miles Harrison to get well soon after his recent surgery. He has been a really good rugby commentator when I have heard him on ITV & Channel 4.
Sticking with rugby for the moment;
Lions vs Japan is now going to be broadcast live on Virgin Media 2 in Ireland this Saturday. Even though there has been no formal announcement made yet by VM; it has been spotted on the VM 360 box EPG's in Ireland recently.
That would make it the very 1st time that a Lions match has been broadcast live on VM Ireland. On other occasions in the past, before Sky took the exclusive rights up until this year, it was broadcast on RTÉ.
