Top of the Pops on BBC Four - mumu03 - 21-11-2021 Been pointed out elsewhere that though they don't mention the following week's hosts at the end of every show in this era, we do often get exclusive acts trailed - clearly BBC4 didn't need to edit anything for these first couple of editions that preceded Rose's, but based on their previous with removing references to content in dropped editions it's probable there'll be some abrupt cuts to come. Top of the Pops on BBC Four - James2001 - 22-11-2021 Even in the past they didn't remove mentions of dropped editions as long as banned presenters weren't mentioned. So for example, we had the mentions of who was presenting the 1988 editions which were skipped due to mute links left in, as well as Tommy Vance's quite lengthy explanation of the train world record attempt in 1984, as he didn't actually mention who was presenting the episode, as well as Bruno Brookes' on-screen introduction and telling us we'd be seeing him "next week" (which we didn't, as his first show was with DLT, but BBC4 left it in as DLT wasn't mentioned), along with much of the hype about the 1000th edition in 1983. Top of the Pops on BBC Four - mumu03 - 22-11-2021 They've never been that consistent - in actuality, virtually all reference to the 1000th edition during the 999th was indeed cut for its BBC4 showings. The playout, for one, was faded out much earlier than on the original broadcast to get around a large graphic promoting it. For the recent 21/11 repeat they did leave mention of the George Michael/Elton John video exclusive in, which may well be a sign that they won't bother, but in that case it at least makes more sense with the same clip being shown during 5/12 as well. Top of the Pops on BBC Four - HEW2343 - 22-11-2021 When BBC Four reran 7/3/85 the mention of Gary Davies and Richard Skinner being the hosts of 14/3/85 (Mike Smith hosted it with Gary on the actual show) was also removed. Top of the Pops on BBC Four - James2001 - 22-11-2021 Not been entirely consistent with it, then. Top of the Pops on BBC Four - Col87 - 23-11-2021 Moving on to the current day it might not mean much but Top of the pops have once again been left out of the press release for Christmas highlights. I wonder if they are once again trying to quietly axe it and if they end up doing a u turn again like last year. If that scrapping of the show does happens it's probably for the best because the last thing I want is to see is that orrible Ladbaby make it to the Xmas No.1 spot for the 4th time.

That's why I'm enjoying the current re-runs. But I must admit that 2020 was the first time ever that I didn't watch the new Christmas Day edition. The music featured in it these days no longer appeals to me. And the core target audience for the show would now include teens who weren't even born when the weekly show was axed in 2006. Although I expect it to return on Christmas Day this year, I do wonder how much longer it can continue. I think if it had a slight format change and had the actual Christmas chart rundown with maybe a bit of live lounge covers on the Christmas program maybe with some new up and coming acts it could work better. Then leave the new year special for the chart of the year and the biggest songs of the year with a look at future releases that could work a lot better. With it not been mentioned though I do wonder if it will actually be on as it one of the few things I would watch on Christmas Day and another blow to music programs on TV as they is no music programs at all on BBC one elsewhere over Christmas either. Top of the Pops on BBC Four - InsideUlster - 24-11-2021 No word of mouth if TOTP will be there for the Xmas schedules on BBC1. Top of the Pops on BBC Four - VMPhil - 27-11-2021 I wonder why the Xmas edition didn't feature out-of-vision links like the regular editions - there was even a proper old-school introduction from a balcony with the presenter pointing at the artist and the camera swooping over! That, along with a greater number of video clips and an absence of snoozesome album tracks and exclusives, it felt very close to a proper edition of TOTP again! No time-wasting dedicated credits sequence either, just Queen as the playout. Obviously would've been a bit of a mood shift to have 'Get Out Of That' blaring out following it... The Chrsitmas and New Years shows have been recorded in early December in recent years so it would be virtually impossible to do this unless they recorded a lot closer to the big day. Plus this year the Christmas chart won't be out until 24th. |
