that’s the ITN reporter Colin Baker (most famous for that Thames News blooper often shown in It’ll Be Alright on the Night’)

This Playdays episode from 1993 subverts my initial theory that Dot stopped appearing in the show after The Dot Shop was replaced on Wednesdays by The Roundabout Stop in September 1992, here she is with Mr. Jolly, the roundabout operator.

This also explains why she remained in the show's opening titles until the show was axed in 1997.

I can't help thinking this Wish You Were Here reporter sounds like Alan Partridge as he looks at Brighton in the 80s.

The reporter being John Carter who came up with and was one of the main presenters of Holiday. He defected to Wish You Were Here in the mid 80s.

I don't think it's particularly Partridge-like, no more so than anything else of that era

Krypton Factor 1977 style:

Not only the the train station style of presenting the scores (and the whole 70s vibe going on, no surprise there), there is a very Tetris like intelligence round, a lacklustre assault course (understandable to an extent, it became more impressive in later years), an event that predates its appearance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks (with extra parading) and copious amounts of peeing around time wasting in the General Knowledge round. But at least the "connected" link for the questions started from the off, which is nice.

I love the theme tune it’s kind of catchy not sure why though Big Grin

One thing that's notable is the contestant profiles at the opening as well as the end credits seem to have been animated on film, then keyed over the video- you can see the bob and weave and occassional scratches, and even some jumps due to the splices in the film during the cuts between the end credits. Presumably it was easier to create the effect of the letters appearing one at a time on film in those pre-capgen days.

I love the way the female contestant has her occupation of housewife and her interests are just 'people, talking and TV'. Whereas one of the last contestant's interests is 'civil liberties'

Never let it be said that working in TV isn't glamorous....

Came across this while discussing with a friend TVNZ's handover to BBC World during this time period. I don't often find clips of the hand over from this period, so it was a nice surprise.

This contains:
The end of Sydney 2000 Olympic coverage
Some TVNZ / One News pres
A handover to BBC World
A bit of BBC World pres.

I just found a clip that was added to Youtube today, it's a rare clip of the Closedown on BBC One from the balloon era, interesting to know that this was one of the last should I say PROPER Closedowns where BBC One fades to black before the BBC News Channel, News 24 at the time started broadcasting during Closedown, and one of Andy Taylor's last announcements before he left the BBC announcing team a few weeks later in November 1997.

How Sky did promos in 1994, this particular cheesy example for their first attempt at Blockbusters, talk about blowing your own trumpet:

An out of the ordinary but understandable, closedown sequence from BBC1 the night before Princess Diana’s funeral.

A touch on the messy side too, it seems. Not only with the late-ish end of the news bulletin accompanied with a tone for some reason, but someone goes to fade out the Diana slide a bit too soon.
