The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 27-02-2022 Quite an early lunch then. The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 31-03-2022 The one-off revival won not one but two RTS Awards this week, beating The Masked Singer to the Entertainment award and AJ and Mo winning Entertainment Performance. https://www.instagram.com/p/CbvJj8BqSEa/ The BIG Breakfast - JasonB - 31-03-2022 Brekkie post_id=75980 time= user_id=976 Wrote:The one-off revival won not one but two RTS Awards this week, beating The Masked Singer to the Entertainment award and AJ and Mo winning Entertainment Performance. A very well done to them, it was a great one off. I guarantee you they would have mentioned the awards quite a lot during the show the day after the ceremony if it were still on now and even make every verse in the Friday song link back to them. The BIG Breakfast - RDJ - 31-03-2022 And if that’s not ammo for a full scale revival of BB then I don’t know what is…! It was a breath of fresh air in the current Breakfast landscape that’s just either staid or tabloidy. A light hearted humorous way to start your day is just what’s needed. It did seem from the effort of the titles and the sets that it was possible a full revival may have been destined, but 6 months on and no talk of it it’s looking less likely - mores the pity. I think you have to remember this is an award decided on by the industry itself, it doesn’t necessarily reflect public opinion. I may be wrong on this, but I seem to recall it didn't fare very well ratings-wise - something like 1.1% share in the overnight figures. The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 01-04-2022 C4 love award winning low rating stuff though. Yes, it tanked on the day but I've no doubt had they done a full week it would have picked up significantly and the reception was pretty much unanimously positive. Be interesting to know how it did on All4 after the initial airing. I still suspect a full revival is unlikely - best we can hope for is perhaps another special or two in the autumn to mark either 30 (THIRTY!) years since it launched or C4's 40th. A shame too that the Talking Bowlocks podcast didn't get beyond it's first episode. The BIG Breakfast - Whataday - 06-04-2022 I've just finished Denise's autobiography and while there's not much BB related stuff we didn't know already, I was surprised to learn that originally she was meant to do the weather on the ground - in a bikini - but she refused so they needed to find another gimmick, hence the copter. I was also interested to read that she saw The Biggest Breakfast Ever and realised how much she missed the show, which in turn seemingly led to her returning once Liza left. Judging by the way she discusses the show, had she not been with Jay Kay she might not have left in the first place or at least might have returned to replace Kelly Brook when she was axed. The BIG Breakfast - soupie - 06-04-2022 It was all so long ago now and hard to remember (without looking at YouTube), but was Kelly Brook that bad, and why didn’t they turn her slip-ups into something endearingly positive?? The BIG Breakfast - RobinBlamires - 06-04-2022 Compared to those who presented from 2001 until the end, Brook was far more competent. The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 07-04-2022 I think her on screen gaffes were actually not that obvious - the odd mistake for sure and misunderstanding which perhaps showed a lack of intelligence or indeed wisdom (she was only 19 remember) but most of her supposed gaffes I think were tabloid fodder with an obvious campaign against her from within Planet 24, suggesting things were being done behind the scenes to make things easier for her (keeping scripts simple, spelling out long words in syllables for example). I don't think she was anywhere near as bad as they made out, but it was clearly a very different dynamic to what Johnny had with Denise and subsequently with Liza rather than a more equal partnership. It's a shame really they axed her when she was off on holiday as it may have been interesting to see how she coped over the summer without Johnny - that may have been her chance to shine. It's also worth noting that in the short time she was there having reduced the presenting cast of the main show to basically just Johnny and Denise by the time she had left (though think Mel Sykes was still around too) soon after Kelly arrived they reinstated the Down Your Doorstep slot and bought in Richard Bacon and then bought in Sara Cox (I think she was before Gail) for her own slot at the house too, effectively taking on the previous On the Bed role but in a lower profile caravan). Talking of Mel Sykes she was of course tipped to take over from Denise but it didn't happen. I don't think she had done much than the odd day with Johnny previously (indeed I think they hosted the day before Denise left), and she pretty much vanished from the show herself too having moved on from The Bigger Breakfast, but was part of the announced 2001 relaunch line up, though not sure she did much more than another trip to the Oscars. Quick question though - did she host the first week of January 1999. They made that "Super January" with Jenny McCarthy, Caprice and the various Miss UKs, but I assume the first week was hosted by two guest hosts unless there was another Super January co-host with Johnny who I forget. Was there any mmention of the fall-out with Johnny? I've never understood the timeline around it - apparently all to do with their salaries, but was it during her first stint or second? Sounds like it was JK who was the factor in her leaving first time round.... Basically both their contracts were due for renewal and Denise wanted them to negotiate as a team but Johnny ended up doing his own big money deal. She conceded he may have been heavily influenced by his agent. But throughout that time she paints a picture of Jay Kay being unhappy with Denise hosting the show alongside Johnny. She actually portrays JK as being quite manipulative in general. Although, it sounds like Planet 24 wouldn't have had to have worked too hard to keep her in 1998. She says the contract issue between her and Johnny was never discussed and it really does sound like they just needed to be shoved into a room together to talk about it between themselves and clear the air. When she returned in 2000 she said it wasn't the same and felt like she had to work hard to force the chemistry with Johnny that had previously been easy. She felt Johnny had resented the fact that Denise had quit when the show was going strong, and left him to pick up the pieces, before waltzing back in on a whim. I wonder how their shortlived BBC One Saturday night show came about if things were already pretty frosty The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 07-04-2022 Has Johnny had an autobiography yet? Does Denise say much about going the Sharon Davies era and going from the Telecopter call to phone in host to stand in host to main host within a matter of months? |
