That depends on how you look at it. Channel 5 had a banner on screen from 12:15 announcing the death. Channel 4 announced the death at 12:30, but it wasn't until 13:00 that channel 5 had a person 'announce' the news.

Channel 4 are getting some slack on Twitter for moving away so quickly from the news. Rightly so in my optinion.
I was only a child at the time. I am not saying channel four should go all day with rolling coverage, however two or three hours would be more respectful given the significance of the event in the country.
Why? If people want to watch it then almost everyone will go to the BBC. A small number of people would watch rolling coverage of C4 so it’s good that they’re offering an alternative. Not everyone wants to watch endless coverage.
In that case, why report it at all? Channel four can close down the news devision.
As I stated, I am not saying they should do a whole day, just a couple of hours. That's what I think, channel four think different and that is within their decision as a broadcaster. Viewers will make their own choices.

Interesting that you can see the "y" in story while the picture's in 4:3 on the banner on your capture, I'm watching it via Virgin and it's cut off here (watching pillarboxed and with overscan turned off). Maybe the virgin box is cropping off the extreme right edge of the frame for some reason?

Channel 4 did break away from normal programmes when Diana died, yes. But their remit is to be the alternative, so I actually think they're making a good call.

If it's true that the BBC will run news coverage until tomorrow morning, will that be the longest a news event has been broadcast? IIRC the news coverage of Diana and the Queen Mother eventually wound down to make way for a revised schedule.
BBC Radio still with a combined news service scheduled all day. Do think they should at least let Newsbeat anchor the coverage on Radio 1 and switch to more reflective music programming. Radio 4 news is fine for the immediate aftermath but they need to be able to reflect their audiences as intended.

Auntie Beeb simulcasting the rolling Prince Philip stuff across One, Two and the NC is a bit much, as far as I'm concerned. Not even any regional news programmes scheduled now, let alone entertainment.
The equivalent rolling radio coverage seems to be simulcast on at least BBC Radios 2/3/4 and Local Radio stations across England.
My Freeview EPG was still listing the usual ITV(1) soaps etc from 7pm a wee while ago, but it's now every bit as all-Philled-up as the Beeb.
