The date of that clip says 17th January 1997. Was this the first week of the undoing of the 96 relaunch?

The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 31-12-2021

I thought it was undone immediately after New Year once they were back with live shows, or at least the first Monday after.

EDIT: New Years Day was on a Wednesday so I imagine they were live on the Thursday and Friday, and I've a feeling it wasn't until the Monday the changes were made.

Yes, that's right. Sharron was ill all that Christmas, she missed the show on Christmas Eve and then, after the pre-records, she was still ill on 2nd January, which must have confused some viewers. Then it was all change when she came back on the Monday.

If i recall, didn't Phil Gayle start around the 1st January? I remember them introducing him "live"

Sharron was "ill" quite a bit if I remember correctly.

Yes, Peter Smith left at the end of 1996 and Phil Gayle came in to replace him at the beginning of the year. Not sure of the actual dates, or whether any short "review of the year"bulletins featured in any of the pre-recorded Christmas episodes, which that year were cut to just an hour.

The final few minutes from Friday November 7th 1997. Could this be the first appearance of the Friday song?

What a brilliant clip! The news still with the different coloured background, a simpler route to midnight, the Friday song, the yellow house credits, then a mention for Light Lunch and TFI Friday, back when Channel 4 offered a true, entertaining alternative through the day!

with those three shows all at their peak, this was as good as C4 ever was in the 1990s

I don't think Light Lunch actually lasted that long. Was soon changed to Late Lunch, initially I think half an hour three nights a week before becoming once a week for an hour, but don't think either of those incarnations lasted long either.

For all its cult status, Light/Late Lunch lasted less than two years. It was at lunchtimes from March 1997 to February 1998, with breaks at the summer and Christmas. Then Late Lunch was half an hour Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at six between March and May 1998, then an hour on Wednesdays from October 1998 to February 1999.

The problem with Late Lunch is they could never replicate all the brilliant running gags in such a short space of time as they could five days a week for am hour, and it just seemed to peter out. Light Lunch was absolutely brilliant, though.

The BIG Breakfast - Fanoftv - 26-02-2022

I knew it was a short time before it moved as Late Lunch, but I didn’t think it was that short, especially as they had two sets for Light Lunch.

It’s a hypothetical question, but would it have been Channel 4’s decision to move the successful show to a teatime slot, Princess Productions wanting to make the change or even Mel & Sue (and their agents) looking at moving on?

As for the programme, it was such a delightful programme with a simple format of cooking with a chef, audience chat, lunch with the guests, dessert cooking then questions from the audience on the sofa. It made great use out of the chefs and the guests and didn’t rely on other features to pad out the time. I’m surprised the format hasn’t been revived.

The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 26-02-2022

Back then celebs being interviewed as they were prepared dinner was a novelty. Now it's every bloody show at the weekend especially. The format lives on in the likes of Sunday Brunch.

In hindsight they should have left it at lunchtime but that 6pm hour used to be so key to C4 so moving their breakout stars probably made sense, though maybe a different format would have been wise.

The BIG Breakfast - James2001 - 26-02-2022

Interestingly I saw a video on YouTube recently which showed Late Lunch being repeated as part of T4, which I couldn't remember happening.

The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 26-02-2022

Yes, I think when it went to an hour on the Wednesday it got a lunchtime repeat on T4, which would have been in it's infancy.

The BIG Breakfast - Fanoftv - 27-02-2022

If I remember correctly it ended the T4 block when it first began in October 1998. Late Lunch followed the Hollyoaks omnibus (back when that was an hour), airing at 12:10.
