RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - JamesWorldNews - 28-05-2022 BIG MOIRA alert. (And Tim Ewart.....) https://youtu.be/gxZoZxJ4dQs Wogan at the newsdesk???!! https://youtu.be/MbynwPKfKnE I have to say, I find that entire Buerk piece fascinating. From the panic of locating John Cole, to the subsequent building blocks briefing, to Andrew Harvey handling a big story 3 minutes to air and all those journalists literally sprinting across the newsroom when someone shouted for help! And the knee-height headphone jacks built into the desks to take the BBC Radio live feed........ ......and not a single Barco in sight. RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - johnnyboy - 31-05-2022 I found myself watching the clean version of the virtual era Six O'Clock News on YouTube and just had to capture this image to share with those of you who, like me, believe that this was the best era prez-wise for news anywhere and at any time. ![]() It's majestic. The grand sweep and curve of the lit desk is amazing. I never quite understood how the BBC made it appear as if the magnificent back wall was a long way away - I did see a YouTube video about how this is done but I can't remember the name (or understand the concept). Memories. Imagine that backdrop and that music in widescreen HD and full Dolby Atmos sound coming out at you. (BTW agree on everything else you have said) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghw1q2GP9o0 RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - JamesWorldNews - 01-06-2022 Martyn Lewis, Jennie Bond and the making of The Six O’clock News. I love how Jennie walks off set like a Queen at the end. Still not sure how those video tapes got down the line from Belfast to London in time for transmission. The telephone call between the respective editors was priceless! https://youtu.be/h5IenTTddis RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - Roger Darthwell - 14-06-2022 40 years ago today, the Falklands War came to an end with Britain's victory, here is how BBC News reported the end of the war https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmOGmHrzoEo RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - Tom - 20-06-2022 Today marks 22 years since a power cut caused chaos to BBC News and the whole BBC network, here is some footage from that day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDeHz_-3fX0 The start and end of the 9 O'Clock News from that day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GR1vEk63bo A summary from Des and Mick Online: https://www.desandmick.co.uk/television/powercuts/2000/ RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - Steve Williams - 20-06-2022 (20-06-2022, 12:13 AM)Tom Wrote: Today marks 22 years since a power cut caused chaos to BBC News and the whole BBC network, here is some footage from that day: Great fun, this. I had the edition of Aerial from the following week, and I remember reading that BBC1 that evening was pretty much coming entirely from Belgium, via the Euros coverage, and bypassing TV Centre completely. Convenient for them they had that match, and that the news was at ten which gave them some extra time to get sorted out. At 10.30 that night was an unscheduled Panorama about the hooliganism at the Euros, because it had got to the stage where they said England might be kicked out of the tournament, and they completely lost their editing facilities at TVC, so they had to find an editing facility in Amsterdam to pixelate faces and add subtitles, and then when England lost in the last minute and surprisingly went out they had to change the ending with less than an hour before broadcast. RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - Tom - 20-06-2022 As Michael Buerk says it was quite an evening. Also, from the day of the power cut is some footage of how BBC Newsline ended their programme with them crashing into Dad's Army and then crashing into Euro 2000 coverage. https://rewind.thetvroom.com/32449/pres/bbc-one-northern-ireland-junction-and-euro-2000-opening-titles-bbc-television-centre-power-failure-20th-june-2000/ RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - Newsroom - 20-06-2022 IIRC Sarah Montague presented two Sunday bulletins from BIG MOIRA's tiny desk in the old Breakfast studio. Cannot find that video anywhere, but remember it well. During the power cut in 2000, Newsnight ended up coming from the main news set, for some reason. They'd put some black pastic (binbags?) around the desk to make it look a bit more Newsnight-y, but they started to fall off during the programme. I also remember they had Chris Waddle in the Newcastle studio to talk about the Euros, but although they had picture there was no sound, so he had to talk over the phone. One thing I have always wondered about this shot of Monatgue and MOIRA is how they achieved the 'clean' look of having no column as shown in the image below in N8. Was this recorded before the October 1999 installation and then saved 'for a rainy day' or was it digitally altered to make it look like this? Sorry to ask. ![]() (Original Image Sourced from TV Live: BBC News 24 (1999-2003)) RE: BBC News: Nostalgia - DTV - 20-06-2022 (20-06-2022, 04:56 PM)AaronLancs Wrote: One thing I have always wondered about this shot of Monatgue and MOIRA is how they achieved the 'clean' look of having no column as shown in the image below in N8. Looking at my SketchUp model of that set, it is impossible to get a 'clean' image of the entire backwall from the main set/camera area itself, so I would assume that the pre-recorded backdrop was recorded in the newsroom area where you can get a straight look from several angles. Though, given that you can only see three of the five columns of screens in the backdrop (which is gettable from the main set), it might just be a crop job. The lead item on the bulletin is this story, which puts the date as 24 May 1996. (The quarter past headlines also mention the top rugby union voting to break away, which I think means a bit of the same bulletin showed up as archive footage in a BT Sport Film about Newcastle Falcons recently - though it's not made it into their on-demand player so I can't easily check.) |
